PROLOGUE

As a designer, I believe that architecture is a mediator that has the potential to mediate internal essence with external environmental forces through multiple scale forms. In the past six years of architecture study, I actively explore the possible impact of architecture as a mediator on music, culture, politics, urbanism, and engaging broader interaction with society. The fifth project in the portfolio, ‘Architecture as an instrument’ is the first chance to apply my theoretical thinking into practice, in which architecture functions as a mediator, whose form is defined by the propagation of sound. In other words, sound, the invisible subject, is presented by architecture in a more explicit way. In the fourth project I shifted my focus to the mundane yet complex city , and I believe that public buildings largely acted as mediators to convert already saturated potential energy into kinetic energy and help to evoke shared, random and unfunctional human behaviors .

In America, many face the choice to live in the city or in the suburb. People must give up one between the social life in the city and proximity to nature in the suburb. Hyburban is manifesto against such binary. In typical suburban development, everything is spread out and disconnected. There is no interaction between programs and no habitat connection. We propose stacking as the approach to hybridity. By stacking programs, we create interaction between different programs and leave more room for ecological habitat. By decreasing building footprint, we connect the sur-

rounding landscape elements. By stacking open space, diverse programs, and connection, we create three types of hyburban blocks that maximize interaction between different activities and users. We add programs onto three main preserved programs so that social activities can occur. Thereby, the non-places transform to organisms of live, work and connect.

HYBURBAN

Hyburban is a new model of lifestyle that embraces social and ecological diversity.

We believe that people should have the rights to choose their lifestyles without giving up what they need. By hybridizing, we create new options and provide more freedom for people to live their life as they wish.

Increasing Urban Depression Decreasing Urban Diversity

Urban expansion is reflected in two ways - tiled sprawl into the wilderness and vertical rise of tall buildings. However, Grid as a means of city organization is a simplification of the complexity of cities. In our constant pursuit of high density, urban public space has gradually become homogeneous and exclusive.A living city does not arise additively, but rather, complexly. This means that we have to forget about the nineteenth century’s additive ways of seeing and thinking and additive planning methods and instead, introduce new methods of seeing and thinking and planning: methods are better suited than the additive ones to reflect the city’s complex processes.

Different from the grid, we envision a new way of organizing the merging of cities, and to face squarely at urban density, but simultaneously, as a corrective, to re-gain public space. With vertical and horizontal dimensions, “L” has the adaptability of single deformation. “L” will be used as the prototype for deformation and combination to reshape three-dimensional urban space, so as to organize urban residents’ activities in an orderly manner and trigger the possibility of urban residents’ interaction with nature and surrounding anytime and anywhere.

The L Shaped City grow up in four pases with the main streets and square spirals up. The main streets connected with living and working communities lap up and extend for four direction to joint with other blocks. Open square spirals upward and is the main urban public space. The tall buildings radially connect the square. The void square is treated as an urban park, a green zone shared by high floors. The solid squares can be used as large public buildings, such as museums, concert halls and so on. The nodes among tower, street, squre and community would be the most active space for residents from different class.

DEVELOP IN STRIPS ALONG THE EXISTING CITY L shape city, as a high-density urban block, develops in strips, allowing for controllable environment with contemporary individualism and organic growth. This communication together with city-blocks foum a framework on which city can continue to grow horizontally (west-east).This is to assure optimal sunlight conditions of all districts destined for habitants. Presented scheme for the city starts with one vertical district with approximately 20 thousand people and has ability to expand horizontally by adding districts.

In Beijing, the cultural center of China, floading musicians are chasing their music dreams. However, the new comers are facing huge pressure -- high housing rent, no space to practice, no audiences and no stage for show. All these obstacles are eroding their identity as musicians. This apartment helps those floading musicians to re-obtain a sense of belonging, satisfying their living demands, and serving as a musical instrument. Rather than provide extra space for collective music activities, the public space of the original apartment is used as music performance. In those performance space,

architecture is as a mediator, whose form is defined by the transmit of sound. At the same time, the involvement of architecture is not merely reflected in the transmission of sound, but in the transmission of the state of musical events. Traditionally, musical performance is a purposeful activity that needs to be organized and planned specifically. By integrating musical performances into residential buildings, the daily routine of architecture helps transform the purposeful activity of listening to concerts into the background music that integrates people’s life.

As Serbia’s second largest city, Novi Sad is a center of education and technolog with its education and tertiary industries are mainly based around the Danube river. During the development of Novisad from the Danube to the inland canal, the morphology of the city showed changes in bands at various time periods, and the residents of the city experienced social housing, the free maerket and industrial nearby housing. The site is located next to the Tisa Canal, has been abandoned as industrial brownfield, despite enjoying efficient railway, landscape and road resources. The project is working on the waterfront district by transferring former heavy industrial brownfield into a walking-friendly mix-use zone and this would be a new gate for Novi sad. On the one hand, it will serve as a starting point for a new community, opening Novi Sad to non-canal development. At the same time, it undertakes the function of purifying industrial land and dynamically treating the boundary between industrial

land and urban land. A water loop in the middle was designed to enhance the cohesion of both sides of the canal. At the same time, different riparian response measures, artificial and natural, were adopted on the north and south banks to better adapt to the original site and retain their characteristics. The new block will be inserted into the ring in two different sizes of strips. Large and small strips can be combined with each other to form hybrid strips. Different strips correspond to different levels of roads, greening ratios and public Spaces, which can be flexibly divided into water rings. The water loop provides residents with the possibility of small-scale waterfront entertainment that is not disturbed by industrial transport, and the boardwalk interweaves the river with adjacent buildings, enhancing the vitality of the south bank.

THE NODE OF STRIPS AND THE INTRODUCED CANAL

The secondary channel provides residents with the possibility of small-scale waterfront entertainment that is not disturbed by industrial transport, and the boardwalk interweaves the river with adjacent buildings, enhancing the vitality of the south bank.

A water loop in the middle was designed to enhance the cohesion of both sides of the canal. At the same time, different rivel bank response measures, artificial and natural, were adopted on the north and south banks to better adapt to the original site and retain their characteristics. The new block will be inserted into the ring in two different sizes of strips. Large and small strips can be combined with each other to form hybrid strips. Different strips correspond to different levels of roads, greening ratios and public Spaces, which can be flexibly divided into water rings.Different bands further divide the rings so that each ring has a unique experience.

In response to the natural bays on the north bank that enhance the cohesion of the two banks, artificial banks on the south bank introduce water to form a triangular island and a secondary channel. The secondary channel provides residents with the possibility of small-scale waterfront entertainment that is not disturbed by industrial transport, and the boardwalk interweaves the river with adjacent buildings, enhancing the vitality of the south bank. The treatment of the northern bank is mainly to maintain the original natural boundary of the canal, with water landscape as the main feature, and buildings and roads back, and preseve the original bend as a natural port of call.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

The world is witnessing the highest level of displacement on record. According to UNHCR, by the end of 2016, 65.5 million individuals were forcibly displaced worldwide as a result of persecution, conflict, violence, and human rights violation. We propose to build a skyscraper along the border between two countries which provides shelter with security and development opportunities for refugees.

HORIZONTAL GROWING BUILDINGS A normal city sonsists of buildings, greenings, roads and pumps. We propose representing it to a faced, so that we can get a city in a different direction — a horizontal city.

TRAFFIC NET In urban scale skyscrapers, traditional elevators can not meet the needs. Here we prpose a new elevator with a cylinder shell and a square cabin. With this structure, it can move any direction and keeps inner cabin horizontal.Rails are set sccording to needs. Rails and these new elevators form a more free and efficient traffic network together. The first-level traffic net breaks the restriction of vertical traffic by rail elevators, a c h i e v i n g e ff i c i e n t traffic. The second-level traffic net forms a high-coverage transportation net in blocks elevators .
