Water, wind, light, soil, rain, all keep whispering their stories to us. The narration and abstraction make landscape just like a beutiful poem, letting audience walk in it and experience their own journeies. The changeable interaction in landscape is mysterious and facinating, which is what lanscape means to me. The works selected include the projects inspired by its own stories and the ones adopting the additional narration. The inspiration contains nature, beauty, and culture, enhancing the awareness of local identity, as well as the connection with place.

The Site is at RISD Farm, Barirnhton. The site is along Providence River, and it has various intresting characters t o st u d y . Sta r tin g to look a t the composition of soil and the related vegetation condition, I tried to analyze the transition within the site. I was interested the area around the ridge, and the interaction with light, wind and sounds. The main concept os to create a space with various transition that directs people and provide different experiences.

The major thresholds are around the ridge and the forest. For me, the most interesting threshold is on the top of the hill. The narrow and shady path could be an indication, directing people to the ridge. Then, there is an open lawn framed by vegetation but people still can see the bay.

3

Diagram-Spatial Analysis(Existing Condition)

Hydrology transition: The water will flow faster from the top of the hill to the lower places, and it would stay in the southern area which is a wetland. Topographic transition: From the road, there is a gentle slope toward the top of the hill, and then there comes a down slope to the forest and wetland. The ridge blocks the vision from both sides; therefore the view on the hill is open and becomes a surprising transition when people walk from north to south. In addition, people would walk more slowly when climbing the hill, and faster when going down. The narrow and shady area also encourages people to pass faster. The top of the hill and the beach have high potential for staying and gathering. Vegetation Transition: The vegetation along the road works as buffer, and the trees before slope implies a direction. The forest blocks the view and frames a big transition of wetland.

I would like to create a gate that provides a transition from dense human activity to natural woods and wet land. The position of the gate is around where the slope starts to go down, creating another transition of topography, and emphasizing the compressed feeling when walking through the gate. The classroom is perpendicular to the light at 3 o'clock, keeping it the brightest area. The other wall with gate is parallel to the sea and existing contour line, which is aimed to be integrated with nature. The classroom is framed by stone walls and seats, providing spaces for people to stay. The short stone walls on the lawn become a transition of mix functions area, which could frame and direct the way back to the parking lot. The material of stone have the quality between natural and artificial therefore could be an indication and balance of different types of land use. The quality of vegetation enhances the sequence of close and open spaces. Trees with dense leaves and low branches are planted as grid, creating a darker space and strong sense of direction. When people come in the site from the arrival point, they would be intrigued about what will happen beyond the ridge. Cross the ridge, trees with loose leaves and high branches provide an open space that people could gather around.

The phenomenon of light at 3:00 pm at the end of October could work together with vegetation, generating similar sequence of light and dark spaces as close and open spaces and attracting people to the classroom. The shrubs are trimmed as curve line that create more interesting space but also follow the same concept about directing people. In addition, the sounds created by them could guide people back to the parking lot. The wind is very strong in the existing site; therefore the new land form and vegetation could create a space with weaker wind that people can stay more comfortably.

The installation at RISD Farm is aimed to test the scale in real space to understand the relationship with people. We were assigned in groups with shared qualities of our own design concept of this project. We used curtain, pipe, and rope to represent the landform we would like to build. We tried to lift the elevation of land to direct people and movement. After doing this intallation, we could go back to modify our own design with more reasonable consideration of dimension and scale. First I worked on the technique of carving on clay model as inspiration, then I tried to apply this method to the site. After visiting the park, I developed the main concept as weaving, both in 3 dimensional space and plan view, to emphasize that Bold Point Park not only has strong connection with surroundings, but also has interesting qualities within the park itself. My Goal is to weave them together, let people have chance to overlook the whole scene and be embedded in the environment.

Letting water come in and go out The middle area is a sucken space that could be filled by water at high tide, on the other hand, it is an outdoor gathering space for people when it is low tide.

The project is designed to highlight the tide, and the landscape would be changed by tide due to different elevations. Water will fill up various areas during a day, letting people feel time and nature. When low tide, people can stroll on the beach at the edge of the park, and the middle area could work as an open space or amphitheater. But when high tide, the water will fill up the middle area, creating a pool. The beach is also underwater, and people could walk on the the path within water, experiencing the amazing view. The sections show the the conjunction of pavement area and soft edge, which emphasizes the contrast between them and the strong shape.

This site is where the Flora expo was held, so the issue is about post expo usage. On the basis of the original land plan, I redesigned it with a new meaning. Government keeps advocating art development, and this is the best place to conduct such idea because there are the art centers, the exhibition pavilions and abundant historical heritage. The concept was that I wanted art works and exhibitions to be out of the buildings and interact with the environment, including light, wind, sky and plants, providing a possibility for art works to present different “expressions” and be more approachable for people. In addition, it is also easier to feel the beauty of nature. I wanted to emphasize both artificial and the nature beauty, and evoked the care of where we live.

The site analysis, concept development and the design process are tightly related to each other to create a space which is accesible, full of art and culture. This site has the potetial to connect the green spaces in Taipei City, besides, it is designed with different functions. The predeicted desity of usage shows the relationship between functions and design, which results in the final site plan.

04 The ultimate goal is to deal effectively with stormwater on site. We have provided retrofit BMPs that reduce the total volume of runoff from the plaza over 2000 cf. In reducing the runoff volume we have also reduce downstream flooding and channel erosion in larger storm events. To make the stormwater element more apparaent to plaza users, we introduce the WaterHarvester, providing shade, greening, and enhanced seating to the plaza. Placing these functional and sculptural elements within the plaza symbolizes the contribution of the design programs to environmental sustainability while enhancing and extending the outdoor use of the plaza. Also, this concept can be part of Hokie Spirit Trail, which is a project connecting whole campus.

Overview

Virginia Tech is about inventing the future, so we want to develop and implement an innovative idea. Our rainwater harvister is a structural form that collects rainwater, provides spaces for people to relax, and serves as a support structure for vegetation. The WaterHarvester embodies aspects of the four disciplines of Virginia Tech’s School of Architecture + Design. It has structural and material properties of architecture, can be manufactured like most industrial design products, is an element of the landscape that creates interior spaces when positioned in an array . Since the buildings surrounding Cowgill Plaza house these disciplines, the rainwater harvester creates a symbolic link between our School, the university community, and visitors to our campus.

The Virginia specification allows several alternative templates for planting bioretention areas. We have chosen a combination of turf, herbaceous, shrubs, and Sweet Pepperbush (Clethra ainifolia) trees to provide a more natural atmosphere and to simulate the Green Ash predevelopement condition. The design enhances opportunies for current uses taking place on the plaza while also encorporating an exhibition space which will become an important stop on the Hokie Spirit Trial. In addition, we have created a stronger center for the plaza which can be used as a stage for events or a platform for various exhibitions. Stormwater is addressed using retrofitted BMPs that are placed with consideration to elevation change, the structure, and utilities that exist beneath the surface. The BMPs include bioretention, rain garden, infiltration and grenn roof. Thirty five WaterHarvester units which realize the fundamental concept of this design are arrayed along the edges of the plaza creating a pergola that defines pedestrian cooridors and creates resting areas.

05 To emphasize the characteristic of Kaohsiung and the uniqueness, water and green are used as main elements interwoven in space. The ultimate goal is to reinterpretate the image of emerald with tropical plants, which is suitable for the climate in southern Taiwan, refelcts the vivid personality of Kaohsiung people, provides the precious "green" in city, and associated with luxury due to the innate quality of emerald. In addition, the geometric shapes and the fine texture materials make the whole design more polished and urban. The different layers and elevations are designed to harmonize public and private spaces without any solid walls.

The concept is using the shape of pyramid to create a landform and associate with the idea of valuable germ. The form is cohesive through waterscape, flower bed, and garden wall to emphasize the theme. The details including elevation and view are well considered. Through the horizontal section, it is clear that each pyramid with plants has different heights and shows different sides. In addition, the large efforts are put on how to deal with public space in this private project. The backyard garden is a place that should be open to public, so the use of higher plants and the change of elevation ensure the privacy of residents. The water feature in front of the builfing is a focal point and separate customers and residents.

The design of roof garden is also based on the same concept as first floor, using the geometric shape to represent germ. Because the space is divided oddly by the central building, I made a lot of effort to define these spaces for different activities. The infinity pool can be connected with Heart of Love River, which is the biggest attration for residents. The glass wall makes it easier to prohibit residents from entering pool area during winter time, which is helpful for maintenance but ensures the beautiful view. The BBQ tables and other seats are designed like sculpture or public art, and cohesive with the pavement and other facilities, making the space artistic when there are no people using it,. The texure design of pool bottom is aimed to reflect light and show different colors shining through water. The SPA pool is like a daimond embedded in the infinity pool. The whole design of roof garden is about young, modern, and comfortable.

The Villas of Luxury Collection are part of Starwood Hotels and are to be built on a hill. The project is to reconstruct the beauty of Lijiang and the culture of Naxi, the oldest minority of Lijiang. Prior to designing, lots of studying was done on the topography to ensure the safety of the structure, the height of the walls, the drainage system, and the sight of view to the sacred mountain across. One of the design concepts is to use native plants to create the wildlife experience, and the other concept is to provide various ways to appreciate the mountain. It is mainly about providing a homelike experience of Lijiang for people of all ages.

3D Model and Site Plan of Type 1

I took advantage of geographic changes to create an outdoor resting area to encourage the interactions between travellers and nature. The garden walls are designed to let visiters experience the best view of the place and insure the privacy at the same time. Also, it includes many cultural symbols to show the identity here.

The intention is to integrate street furniture with landscape design, making the furniture more interesting and attractive. The inspiration came from landform, and I tried to represent the topography with the bench. The final product is a combination of bench and bicycle rack. The amounts of chair and the arrangement are depending on different conditions of the site.

Example of Using

At first, the design was aimed to be constructed by metal, creating the movement of ribbon. But considering the difficuties and amount of time, I modified the final design as a base box made by wood to get better support, and limitied the usage of metal but still captured the key shape of original concept.
