Landscape is a Poem

Water, wind, light, soil, rain, all keep whispering their stories to us. The narration and abstraction make landscape just like a beutiful poem, letting audience walk in it and experience their own journeies. The changeable interaction in landscape is mysterious and facinating, which is what lanscape means to me. The works selected include the projects inspired by its own stories and the ones adopting the aditional stories. The themes contain nature, beauty, and culture, enhancing the awareness of local identity.

This site is where the Flora expo was held, so the issue is about post expo usage. On the basis of the original land plan, I redesigned it with a new meaning. Government keeps advocating art development, and this is the best place to conduct such idea because there are the art centers, the exhibition pavilions and abundant historical heritage. The concept was that I wanted art works and exhibitions to be out of the buildings and interact with the environment, including light, wind, sky and plants, providing a possibility for art works to present different “expressions and be more approachable for people. In addition, it is also easier to feel the beauty of nature. I wanted to emphasize both artificial and the nature beauty, and evoked the care of where we live.

This site is in the Daan Forest Park, the biggest park in Taipei. I chose the story of “Winnie the Pooh ” as my theme. I reconstructed the 100 Acre Wood in the story, combining it with the English garden style and healing garden. I related each character’s home to the topics, including a tree house playing zone, a garden with colors, and several mini farms, all of which were designed to improve the five sense for children. I wanted to connect playing to therapy and used the popular cartoon, with a feast of colors to attract children. In the meanwhile, liberating the children’s fear of illness, and provided them with more time and space with nature.

This deign is aimed to provide a better place for children who need therapy from nature, which is similar to healing garden. Therefore I tra winnie the pooh to an English garden, embracing varity of functions to enhance five senses of children. I also consider the density of users, and then arrange different designs in it. Because Daan park is the biggest park in Taipei City, the larger beneficial for environment and children. I want to use a familiar story to attract children, make them happily recover from illness, and und of nature. This site near other play grounds and central pool is the best place to realize this innovative playground for children.

Walking Path

Trough this project, I made an additional effort on the plant design.I chose a lot of plants common in English garden(some are also usual in Taiwan) to realize the imagination of this classic story. In that, the different layer and color combination are one of the features in this place. The colors and textures of plants could provide a good opportunity for children to work with environment as healing garden. The enrichment of plants in "Garden of Colors" can stimulate children's visual ability and teach them to recognize different plants. "Mini Farm" let kids grow some vegetables and learn how to collaborate with others. In the end , they can taste their own crops. The tree house is a playing zone providing variety of facilities, such as slide, swing, horizontal bar, and climbing net. These can make children exercise different parts of their bodies and still have a lot of fun. The big lawn is a great place for kids to touch the ground and grass, and make them be aware of nature. The tree house cafe is a resting area and provides some snacks and drinks to attract people.

03 The ultimate goal is to deal effectively with stormwater on site. We have provided retrofit BMPs that reduce the total volume of runoff from the plaza over 2000 cf. In reducing the runoff volume we have also reduce downstream flooding and channel erosion in larger storm events. To make the stormwater element more apparaent to plaza users, we introduce the WaterHarvester, providing shade, greening, and enhanced seating to the plaza. Placing these functional and sculptural elements within the plaza symbolizes the contribution of the design programs to environmental sustainability while enhancing and extending the outdoor use of the plaza. Also, this concept can be part of Hokie Spirit Trail, which is a project connecting whole campus.

Overview

Virginia Tech is about inventing the future, so we want to develop and implement an innovative idea. Our rainwater harvister is a structural form that collects rainwater, provides spaces for people to relax, and serves as a support structure for vegetation. The WaterHarvester embodies aspects of the four disciplines of Virginia Tech’s School of Architecture + Design. It has structural and material properties of architecture, can be manufactured like most industrial design products, is an element of the landscape that creates interior spaces when positioned in an array . Since the buildings surrounding Cowgill Plaza house these disciplines, the rainwater harvester creates a symbolic link between our School, the university community, and visitors to our campus.

The plan is divided into four drainage areas that we have analyzed using the Virginia Runoff Reduction Method (VRRM). The practices shown on the plan are sufficient to capture and treat the treatment volume. However, achieving the goal of phosphorus reduction would require the addition of permeable pavement in non-rooftop areas during a future phase of plaza renovation. total runoff from the plaza surface will be reduced by 2216 cubic feet and the phosphorous reduction will be 1.32 lb/ac/yr. The WaterHarvesters will capture over 300 cubic feet per storm event which will be filtered and used to irrigate the plantings they contain.

The Virginia specification allows several alternative templates for planting bioretention areas. We have chosen a combination of turf, herbaceous, shrubs, and trees to provide a more natural atmosphere and to simulate the predevelopement condition. Because herbaceous plants grows rapidly they can provide cover for the filter area within a short period of time improving both appearance and performance

The design enhances opportunies for current uses taking place on the plaza while also encorporating an exhibition space which will become an important stop on the Hokie Spirit Trial. In addition, we have created a stronger center for the plaza which can be used as a stage for events or a platform for various exhibitions. Stormwater is addressed using retrofitted BMPs that are placed with consideration to elevation change, the structure, and utilities that exist beneath the surface. The BMPs include bioretention, rain garden, infiltration and grenn roof. Thirty five WaterHarvester units which realize the fundamental concept of this design are arrayed along the edges of the plaza creating a pergola that defines pedestrian cooridors and creates resting areas.

The first inch of water falling on the harvesters will be stored in the harvesters. Any greater depth of rainfall would go to the overflow, so the bioretention is aimed to collect remained water. The different permeable pavements create more interesting space for users and let rainfall goes through the filter media, treating the water and store it. The total storage of this bioretention is about 6000 cf, and there is an underdrain to help drain unexpected rainfall with high intensity. The whole system integrating with green walls on adjacent buildings, green roofs, and water harvesters provides biodiversity, runoff reduction, as well as relaxing atmosphere, which is the core concept of this project.

04 To emphasize the characteristic of Kaohsiung and the uniqueness, water and green are used as main elements interwoven in space. The ultimate goal is to reinterpretate the image of emerald with tropical plants, which is suitable for the climate in southern Taiwan, refelcts the vivid personality of Kaohsiung people, provides the precious "green" in city, and associated with luxury due to the innate quality of emerald. In addition, the geometric shapes and the fine texture materials make the whole design more polished and urban. The different layers and elevations are designed to harmonize public and private spaces without any solid walls.

The concept is using the shape of pyramid to create a landform and associate with the idea of valuable germ. The form is cohesive through waterscape, flower bed, and garden wall to emphasize the theme. The details including elevation and view are well considered. Through the horizontal section, it is clear that each pyramid with plants has different heights and shows different sides. In addition, the large efforts are put on how to deal with public space in this private project. The backyard garden is a place that should be open to public, so the use of higher plants and the change of elevation ensure the privacy of residents. The water feature in front of the builfing is a focal point and separate customers and residents.

The design of roof garden is also based on the same concept as first floor, using the geometric shape to represent germ. Because the space is divided oddly by the central building, I made a lot of effort to define these spaces for different activities. The infinity pool can be connected with Heart of Love River, which is the biggest attration for residents. The glass wall makes it easier to prohibit residents from entering pool area during winter time, which is helpful for maintenance but ensures the beautiful view. The BBQ tables and other seats are designed like sculpture or public art, and cohesive with the pavement and other facilities, making the space artistic when there are no people using it,. The texure design of pool bottom is aimed to reflect light and show different colors shining through water. The SPA pool is like a daimond embedded in the infinity pool. The whole design of roof garden is about young, modern, and comfortable.

The Villas of Luxury Collection are part of Starwood Hotels and are to be built on a hill. The project is to reconstruct the beauty of Lijiang and the culture of Naxi, the oldest minority of Lijiang. Prior to designing, lots of studying was done on the topography to ensure the safety of the structure, the height of the walls, the drainage system, and the sight of view to the sacred mountain across. One of the design concepts is to use native plants to create the wildlife experience, and the other concept is to provide various ways to appreciate the mountain. It is mainly about providing a homelike experience of Lijiang for people of all ages.
