BURLINGTON CITY HALL University of Michigan | Arch 552 Insitituition Studio Malcolm McCullouge City Hall Vermont, US
To briefly summarize my project, is firstly creating two contrasting components, one represents monumentality and the other for civic functionality, then exploring the relations between these parts and more importantly, the interactions between people and each part or both. In this project, there are two aspects in the context. One is the highly organized urban fabric which constrained the orientation, circulation and scale of the building. Yet another aspect providing more potentials is the need of defining a destination in this built environment. To be more specific, introducing a new object into the site to define a destination for the plaza and highlight point of the three-building unit or the entire pedestrian street.
2
Exploring the form of the object, or say sculpture, is the most interesting part for me during the whole process. It pushed this project to apply topological forms in one of the components. The dramatic form also implied important topics in ‘City Hall’, like what accommodated in the wells, the people and technology. This frame provides possibilities to establish relations between components and can lead following exploration.

MAKERSPACE University of Michigan | Arch 552 Insitituition Studio Malcolm McCullouge City Hall Vermont, US
As part of a regeneration plan for a community, this project majorly based on two different aspects of the context. One is concerning to the tangible environment, more specifically, the currently rather un‐friendly living environment caused by the traffic junction which separates the site with surrounding area and the human‐made separation due to the fence and unreasonable planning of the research institution which now owns the site. The other aspect is more intangible, aiming to introduce the Makerspace into this area to solve the poverty and inequalities between classes as a self‐organized street university, which is similar as what the Fun Palace (Cedric Price, 1963) targeted. To explore further with this possibility, the space is understood as an architectural realization of the relationship between different programs of the producing process.
7
The position of the Makerspace should be considered as a beneficial option for people who wish to educate themselves without changing their life too much. More to details, the Makerspace is consisted of four main programmes, the open office, the public area, the workshops and services. To set up the principle of the organization of the Makerspace system, unpacking the relationships between different processes during the producing.
The site is located right beside the Blackness Road, which now is a highway to connect the surberb and the city area. As a residential area, the facilities inside the area is quite inadequate. On one hand, due to the highway, walking experience of this area is terrible which to some extend prevents people from walking around their living aera and makes this area a ‘waste’ land. Along with the unresonable urban planning of the univeristie’s research facilities, a huge area is now waste without almost no residents visiting in the centeral part of this block.

BRIEF ENCOUNTER Wuhan University | Arch Design III Xin Li Consulate of UK and British Council Culture Center Wuhan, CN
As one of five consulates which will be constructed at the central city of China, Wuhan, this project is a complex consisted of Consulate of UK and British Council Culture Center (BCCC). In my view, consulates and embassies are set up for creating encounters for two highly integrated culture. They are inclusive for communicating and exclusive for functioning. This interest paradox is the initial point of this project. The special feature of British Consulate is the close connection of it with the BCCC which focuses on the cultural relations and educational opportunities implying possibility of creating an relationship between different groups in this complex.
12
Massing Process
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS This complex is consisted of 8 separate program types. And these programs can be sorted based whether it is inclusive or exclusive.
PROGRAMS ORGANIZATION Programs are organized vertically based the general/specific users measurement. And the way of massing aims to gain the max overlap area of different programs.
CREATING PLATFORMS The massing is the result of adjusting to the existing typography of the site. And for connections between different programs, public platforms are created.
PATH To connect the waterside and the green space, boxes are separated into two groups to form a path.
SUNLIGHT IN OPEN SPACE Central path and platforms also provide adequate sunlight for different boxes.
GREEN ROOF Green roof intends not only to create a natural open space, but also for the consideration of the fairly adequate rainfall in Wuhan.

THE STONE CHURCH Competition Chen Qin, Yunchun Yang Church Fujian, CN
As one of the largest island, Pingtan Island is located at the easternmost of the south-east China. The hostile environment formed the traditions both of architecture and religion. Christianity became an important part of local culture since hundreds of years ago. This 200-people village locates at the north-east of the Pingtan Island. As many other villages in China, the village is facing the severe decline due to the population dis placement. As part of a regeneration plan of this area, the Stone Church project focuses on reuniting the community by rebuilding Christian church and at the same time will encourage tourism in the village and surrounding area.

Intention Architectural configuration tends to stand in a row
The introduction of Christian religion Located near a small natural port, this village is one of the earliest areas visited by Christian missionaries.
18
The reduction of population With the harsh environment which could barely feed up a limited population, this village has been experienced poverty over years. The young generations tend to leave this village and rarely come back.
Regeneration of The Village As part of the local government’s future plan, this village will gain to opportunity to become a visit spot attracting tourism. And the church, which is deeply involved in the culture of this community, will be the most important one.

Section A-A
As the harsh environment indicated and what the missionary predicted, the manner which the villagers chose is not the fantasy of the picturesque scenery but an attitude to amend the disadvantages brought by the sea and wind. Therefore the building here should persuade a protection for people both physically and spiritually.
