01 CONCRETEPLAS UCL - Architecture Design - Research Cluster 8 - Design Project “Muti-Materiality” - King's Cross Station Redesign King's cross Station, London, UK Partner Zhiyuan Yan, Zhengxian Zhang,Qikun Yang Tutors Kostas Grigoriadis ,Martina Rosati,Lizy Huyghe,Ilaria Di Carl Multi-material design, which has been utilised with great success for a long time, for example in vehicle manufacturing or aerospace engineering, could also open up completely new possibilities in architecture. Based on this topic, in this year’s project, we focused on the possibility of multi-material design with more than two materials and re-applied it to the design of King’s Cross Station. Our design vison is to build a new multi-material western concourse for the King’s Cross Station in London. Urbanistically the focus point is to create more nature and green space which is urgently needed in central London. Architecturally the idea starts with the combination of two readily-available and widely-recycled construction material: concrete and plastic. With the design strategy defined, the ways in which various elements could be combined to realize the design objective are explored more in details. Focusing on concrete and plastic’s different but complimentary properties. The studies start with experimenting the possibilities offered by variations in materials’ morphology, then consolidate in the design of a multi-material panel system that integrates natural vegetation into recycled material. The design of the new concourse relies on a custom computational process that begins with simple diagrams and gradually elevates the complexity of the design. By utilising evolutionary generative tools, design iterations can be automatically created and improved based on desired performance criteria. The process is divided into four stages: path-finding, form-finding, color-finding and moss-finding, each aiming at soliving mulitple design problems.

2. Indoor light transmittance is poor
1. High carbon emissions The existing Kingscross roof is an all-steel structure with a high carbon footprint during construction and use.
The dome has very few light areas, resulting in little daylight in the interior space.
3. Enclosed place The existing design is relatively closed, not closely connected with the external square and the city, and lacking in publicity.
4. Crowded circulation
3. King's cross
When the crowd flow is large, the circulation layout of the ground floor is difficult to evacuate and guide the crowd.
Step 3 Processing Recycling transport routes Assembling transport routes Scope Step 4 Storage Recycling Point
4. Clephane Rd recycling centre 5. Liverpool Road Recycling Point Solution: Using recycled materials Use environmentally friendly recycled materials instead of traditional building materials to reduce carbon emissions.
Solution: Increse natural lighiting Transform the form of the ground and design it as a public green space.
Solution: Open up the structure Make the overall structure more open, to solve the problem of closed and dark interior space.

Red light is responsible for making plants flower and produce fruit. It’s also essential to a plant’s early life for seed germination, root growth, and bulb development.
The effect of blue light on plants is directly related to chlorophyll production. Plants that receive plenty of blue light will have strong, healthy stems and leaves.
Glossiness Attribution
Indoor planting uses red-blue fluorescent lamps to supply red light and blue light.

02 WENXING BRIDGE - LIVE TOGETHER “BRIDGING” Yongxin Old City Wenxing Bridge International Design Competition Yongxin, Jiangxi, China Partner Ruijie Xu, Junsheng Shan
In our time, shared lives give rise to Shared concerns and visions, allowing us to feel and cherish the roots of commonality. As an important local infrastructure, Wenxing Bridge is involved in local daily life. How to make it the foundation of everyday life, the common ground? To ensure the sustainable operation of rural society, we believe that soft institutional foundations (customs and rituals, etc.) need to be integrated in the appearance of daily space and the rigid landscape of infrastructure, which are closely related to the community and the natural environment. As an infrastructure, The Wenxing Bridge is a kind of system. The important thing of the system is the connection, and the connection needs to connect daily life with the continuous interaction of mobility. So the purpose of our design is not only to build the appearance of the bridge, but also to design this kind of fluidity. As a chronic transportation facility, we also reconstruct the spatial production of Wenxing Bridge, cultivate local community, and sustain material and cultural production, that is, promote preservation and communication of people's livelihood through environmental construction and community design. At the same time, we hope to reduce the conflict between the infrastructure (Bridges) and the daily landscape, and adapt to the new daily life. The design aims to construct a permanent new living space and behavior, using Bridges to guide the surrounding living atmosphere, the cultural connotation of the community, behavior and organization. We hope to continue the state of eternal truth of life, truly let the people live in it, according to the daily needs of the people, provide a fluid, elastic space, link the eternal life, history, culture, this will form a sense of belonging, the authenticity of the space into the real life.

03 THE POWER OF COMMONS UIA-HYP Cup 2019 International Student Competition in Architectural Design, Architecture in Transformation, International Union of Architects/Tianjin University/UED -Third Prize Jury - Benedetta Tagliabue, Cui Kai, Ole Gustavsen, Cameron Bruhn 2800 Yangshupu Road, Yangpu District, Shanghai, China Partner Ruijie Xu , Junsheng Shan
Lefebvre said, " Daily life is the convergence of all activities, the bond, and the common foundation." Therefore, the way to change is to think of a resistance space to "re-occupy everyday life." Resist the atavistic and degenerate forms of politics, the artificial limbs and hallucinatory agents of consumerism, the wayward performance ego of consumerism in landscape society, and "build up the sum of the social relations of human beings and each person's existence in daily life". Whether or not this ideal can be realized, it will require us to reconnect and recreate our intercommunity, not just publicity. And that requires us to reinvent routine. The strategy for reinventing everyday urban space is collage. For Colin Rowe, collage cities are characterized by questioning and skepticism about their daily routines, in order to develop the everyday possibilities. However, the daily effect of Chinese cities is changing from the heterogeneous, accidental and mysterious urban space of large and small cities decades ago to the increasingly gentrification trend of large-scale housing and urban space dominated by urban norms. This kind of standardized routine leads to the lack of residents' life experience. Therefore, we think that some heterogeneous and accidental urban space can bring more possibilities to the daily life. This urban space as a form of social behavior and the major constructive behavior. It heals wounds by creating new types of space, it provides the public with a new perspective and direction, and is a kind of happy space.
General Statement Shanghai Yangshupu power plant has been closed for years, and the site is surrounded by a heterogeneous mix of chronically unmanaged communities, an overpopulated population, crowded and chaotic streets, and a large amount of industrial debris, all on the negative edge of the city. But there are some routine lessons worth thinking about. According to the needs of the public, we juxtapose some productive, energetic and permeable Spaces to realize transformation and activate this lost zone with the diversity of urban life. At the same time, we should pay attention to the urban ecology and the whole people's garbage classification movement, establish the household garbage treatment plant and botanical garden of the residents, and create the inner cycle of the power plant ecology. Focusing on the subjectivity of citizens, it aims to improve the quality of life of local people, organize and participate in the discussion of future surrounding urban planning, promote self-realization, make urban symbiosis possible, and build a platform to promote daily development. These accidental spaces transcend daily experience, recreate commonality, reinvent daily life, and realize the happy space.
UIA-HYP CUP 2019 INTERNATIONAL STUDENT COMPETITION IN ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN
Production Mechanism The boiler room of the power plant, originally an important part of the conversion of fuel such as coal into energy production. Now it is transformed into another translation mechanism. That is, the conflicts in life are resolved at the ecological and social levels and new communities are created. The community, made up of aboriginal migrants, was drawn to the converted power plant as part of daily life, a place for sport and recreation, and a more vibrant and sensitive mass culture. Then, led by social groups such as artists and sociologists of Dinghai bridge mutual aid association, they would reflect and study together and carry out lectures, workshops, bazaars, theater performances, etc. This would generate a lot of unexpected dialogues or confrontations, making the power plant a kind of resistance space and happy space. The classified wet waste in the community is transported to the waste treatment plant of the power plant, and the waste generated is provided to the botanical garden of the power plant for use, so as to feed the community and improve the quality of life of residents. This process naturally connects the built environment with daily life, presenting a more dramatic complex and diverse daily life visually and contently, and becoming a kind of social cohesion.

Zhangjiang central is a closed city. The diversity of corporate forms conceals its essential homogeneity. It is impenetrable and generated through continuous repetition. This project attempts to subvert this homogeneity mechanism. Starting from the daily lack in zhangjiang central, it adds the content of infrastructure, maintains the consistency and coherence of the basic form of landscape megaform, and diversifies the internal combination. We hope to create a kind of porosity, which has both function and form. The character of this space is its informality. With strictly defined in contrast to the shape of the building environment, there is an open structure, like a loose network spread on the landscape, trees can penetrate every space, direct contact with the light and green plants, and provides a infinite possibility, spontaneous exchanges between the maximization of proximity between different parts of and visibility.

05 THE SENSE OF CROWDING Micro Housing 2019 International Architecture Competition -Volume Zero -Top 30 Winter 2018 Wangjia Quay Road, Huangpu District, Shanghai, China Partner Junsheng Shan
The project is located in the densely populated central area of Shanghai, Huqiu road, a heterogeneous symbiosis of low-rise residentia areas to be demolished, outstanding historica buildings, art galleries and hotels. The buildings on the site are in disrepair and overbuilt. The new building ensures that it attracts a wide variety of people and brings infinite vitality to Shanghai Bund. The project was inspired by Shanghai alley, which was born in the late 19th century, is a mixture of traditional Chinese courtyard houses and western row houses. As a unique housing type in Shanghai, it blurs public and private living Spaces and creates a vibrant community life. However, due to the rapid development of urbanization in recent years, lane hall gradually fades out of people's sight. I hope to re-present such a sense of "crowding", a kind of space atmosphere filled with all kinds of debris but warm and cooperative among neighbors. The so-called "crowding sense" refers to the friendliness between neighbors, the breath of life, and the diversity and richness of space.
