Design Intent and Criteria

Daily / Spiritual Experience We believe spirituality exists in our everyday life. Finding spirituality is a mentally transitional process. Starting from daily experience, filtering out the chaotic to find calmness, and finally focusing on our inner voices. Our design seeks to offer a place as part of the community where brings the community together but also provide spirituality to groups or individuals.

Community experience - “Live with diversity” - public programs Communal Spiritual Experience - “Diffuse with nature”, Finding spiritual calmness - meeting hall Private Spiritual Experience - “Vacuumed space” - Finding spiritual focus - contemplative space

Architectural Approach Open four corners for the neighborhood to access Grocery store easily and separate the building into two (public and spiritual) to enhance the intensity of transiting from daily experience to spiritual experience.

Lighitng Intent The design strives to apply the concept to both daylighting and electric lighting design and gives different light quality for each experience. - Community experience: dynamic light quality with ever-changing direct daylight condition and various light distribution, also provides visual connections to the exterior. - Communal spiritual experience: Uniform and diffuse light quality within an enclosed space with a visual connection to the sky. - Private spiritual experience: dark space with limited light that enforces visual concentration. active

Sun Path Study - Critical South Light The orientation of the site allows to taking advantage of the dynamic sunlight coming from the south corner, with least obstruction, through a whole year. The east, south, and west faĂ§ade of the public space receive ample direct sunlight, since the sun moving from morning to afternoon, the dynamic changes of daylight condition will be easily perceived. The lowered south volume allows direct sunlight hitting into the gap but not fully penetrating through the north volume, only limited sunlight can get into the contemplative space. The north volumeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mainly opening is located on the north side to avoid direct sunlight in the meeting hall. 13

Sun-eye view Study - Daylight Access The photos are taken under Heliodon device to study the actual daylight access of the building. The red part on each photo represents the areas where the direct sunlight can get to in that specific moment of time. From the photos, we see how dynamic of the daylight changing in the public space throughout a year and how sunlight never get into the spiritual space (except for contemplative rooms).

Summer Solstice

The illuminance mapping study shows a huge difference of daylight character between public space and meeting hall. Because of the sun coming from various directions throughout a day and a year, it presents a dynamic daylight distribution at the public space. In contrast, the daylight quality stays consistently, around 100 to 400 lux, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dimmer and diffuser but adequate.

Radiation Study - Visual Attraction In between the public space and spiritual space is a gap to separate the two in order to serve as a transition point from community experience to spiritual experience. The lowered volume of the public space allows direct sunlight hitting on the massive solid and highly reflective wall and bouncing back to the public space as an attraction for people to move into the spiritual space. The light patch moves up and down throughout different seasons, it is the end point of the dynamic community experience also the start point of the diffuse communal spiritual experience.

Custom Luminaire The only light sources in contemplative rooms, which only can be perceived by human eyes as sparkle light source but doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t distribute illuminance to the floor in order to keep the darkness of the space. The prototype of the luminaire is composed of two parts: recessed housing part made by aluminum with special reflector inside of it and the revealed lens part of glass cabochon. The luminaire to be pre-wired and screwed to the punched stone sheet then mudded to cover the ring to only show the glass part when installing the wall finishes. To avoid glare, all of the luminaires are install above average human eye level.

Lighting Control Narrative

A. The Lighting Control System for the building will consist of switches, sensors to allow local control within spaces as well as centralized control via computer software and other systems. B. The Lighting Control Schedule is included in this document and indicates specific control requirements for each lighting zone indicated on the drawing. The contractor shall provide all necessary sensors, interfaces, control modules, and components necessary for the system to function. C. Control approach for each typical space type is as follows: 1. Meeting Hall: a. Dimming wall switch at central control room/ room entry - wall switch to have on/off buttons and raise/ lower buttons for each control zone; “ON” button to be programmed to set level upon commissioning. b. Timeclock -timeclock to be set for opening hours (from 5am to 10pm) c. Daylight sensor - wall mounted daylight sensors for daylight control zone with separate local control for adjustment. 2. Public Spaces: a. Dimming wall switch at central control room - wall switch to have on/off buttons and raise/ lower buttons for each control zone; “ON” button to be programmed to set level upon commissioning. b. Meeting Hall IES Design Criteria: 10fc - 30fc The Meeting Hall mainly uses indirect ambient lighting in order to create a uniform and more soft feeling to space. The secondary pendant system to achieve target illuminance levels at the center of the space. This method provides adequate ambient light in the space to respond to the electric lighting intent. Perimeter light fixtures are hidden in the architectural reveals to keep from being seen, also with small- degree beam spread to allow for a more even and further -up distribution on the walls.

Illuminance level at Lobby area to be higher than recommendation in order to enhance the contrast of brightness between public space and spiritual space.
