01 TriBeCa Hotel Comprehensive Studio Project (2014 Fall) Professor: Martin Stigsgaard Group Members: Laura Allison, Patrick O’Neill Location: TriBeCa New York
Exterior Rendering
The site extends to the west and south, providing +/-6,000sf of space. With a listed FAR of 5, the total area of the building above ground is approximately 30,000sf. Ultimately, the hotel volume and configuration are the result of zoning and code parameters, program, means and methods of construction, and relation to its urban context.

The challenge of this project was to develop an economically viable hotel within the severe limitations imposed by the site. We developed some novel solutions in terms of the mechanics of the space and how the hotel relates to its urban context. To implement the first concept we created a path through the hotel enabling visitors to enjoy some of its amenities without becoming a hindrance to hotel guests.

As the trend in the global population spirals towards increasing levels of urbanization, the contemporary metropolis has become the problematic site of an ever more critical set of environmental, socioeconomic and cultural concerns. A series of universities and institutes have gathered to create residential campuses on fringe locations around NYC to study the potential responses to these critical issues. I propose a campus that will house a myriad of scholars, students and staff. The areas of study of the new satellite campuses will mostly be dependent on fieldwork to be shared with their main campus. Nonetheless, some academic facilities will complement the heavily residential campuses.

BARCELONA: LEADER IN SOLAR ENERGY Sustainability regulations in Spain’s second largest city, Barcelona, require solar panels to be fitted to all large buildings. The objective is for the buildings to heat 60% of their own hot water. Barcelona is showing the way for the popularisation of renewable energy, and 20 Spanish towns and cities have already followed suit. The EU has already awarded Barcelona a prize for its ambitious initiatives.Since 2000, all new buildings and those undergoing major renovation have had to install solar heat capture surfaces to provide most of their hot water. What is truly groundbreaking in this respect is the fact that Barcelona has ventured to regulate rather than simply encouraging people to make use of solar energy.
The project proposes to display Barcelona’s hidden virtues, a sustained solar energy production while encompassing a double-layered landscape that isolates quiet from busy activities.
The acoustic matters have been considered for laying out the program 15

The advent of 3D printing technologies, such as C-FabTM, have radically changed the industry of architecture through the elimination of traditional construction constraints and an increase in efficiencies. High levels of complexity, both in form and in structure, have been made possible by lighter and stronger materials and automated fabrication methods. Without the added need of tool assemblies. HOME(LESS) + HOUSING is an adaptable module-based system that profits from printing innovations. The core minimizes the required material for thermal control, structure, and ergonomic living.
