1.0 Illinois & Michigan Canal Revitalization Plan LOCKPORT. ILLINOIS

This project proposed to create a redeveloped historic canal front space in the City Lockport, Illinois, by preparing a master plan for the transformation of a historic canal site into a linear urban waterfront park, and the surrounding vacant industrial site into extended city downtown district.

REGIONAL CONTEXT City of Lockport was in Well County, Illinois State, and at the west-south of Chicago. SITE CONTEXT The most significant character of the site’s location was the city downtown connected with the site on the south, and several school districts are on the east of the site. It’s a walkable distance between the project area and the city’s historic district.

I&M CANAL NATIONAL HERITAGE CORRIDOR As a listed National Registered Historic Place, Lockport was a city rich in history and unique to Chicago because of its connection with the I&M Canal. The Illinois & Michigan Canal was an important asset to the cultural history of City lockport.

Memorial Park Development The memorial park was located on the west bank of I&M Canal, connected with main entrance, and the design was focusing on creatig a Texacao memorial park with a restored oil tank. The park served with parking lot, landscape, sculpture, amphitheater and children’s playground. In the center of the site, the restored oil tank was changed into a memorial theater with the techonology of 360’ digital screen to play the vedio of local history. At north side of the oil tank, there was a children’s playground with a creative canal boat play

Natural Park Development

The natural park was on the west side of the canal, with the restored landscape features in the site inventory. There were marshes with trails in the center of the park for stormwater restoration and served as flood buffer area to slow down the flood water. At south part of the park, there were small size prairies with cabins for bird watchers.

2.0 Medora Brick Plant Park Renovation Plan

This project is asking students to develop a restoration plan of a historic brick plant. By interviewing and visiting local community, we developed major design goals as telling the site’s history through preserving structures, and boosting regional heritage tourism.

3.0 Elkhart 4h Fairgrounds Redevelopment

This project is asking students to redevelop the fairgrounds with its extended lands into a year-round event place for visitors. The project vision is to rebrand the fairgrounds as a park and community space.

ELKHART. INDIANA Group: Yizhu Zou,Shenyuan Chen, Jeanelle Wells, Cassandra Miller, Adam Rude

PLANNING CONCEPT

Circulation: Trail Systems and Movement

MASTER PLAN

Circulation: Tram and Service Vehicle Movement

Grow: To continue this growth into the future the fairground will need to be fiscally, ecologically, and socially responsible to ensure sustainable and manageable growth.

Learn: The Elkhart County Fairgrounds will be recognized as a place where learning and teaching are incorporated into every activity. Many of the guiding principles for the “Learn” concept are based off of the 4-H program’s guiding principles.

PLANNING PRINCIPLES

Connect: Further connecting with this community will only strengthen the bond formed between the residents and the fairgrounds. Connecting with other systems, like trails and food systems, will help to ensure that the fairground’s success helps to benefit the community as a whole.

Connect: Gather Heritage park and the Midway are prime opportunities for non-fair season recreational activities. A good example of this would be an ice skating rink in the lawn between Heritage Park and the Midway.

Grow: Agriculture The ecological system throughout Clover Park creates pockets of gathering spaces that will be utilized during fair and non-fair time. The large amount of open space with natural features, such as a wetlands systems, creates a relaxing escape as well as learning opportunities.

14

Connect: Gather A portion of the new land is being branded as “Verterans Memorial Park to commemorate the past, present, and future verterans of the Elkhart County area.

Connect: Cultue T Open spaces create places for people to gather and celebrate various cultural aspects such as art fairs, concerts, festivals and exhibitions. The Veteran’s Memorial Grandstands and the plaza behind them is one of these places. The Community Center and Veteran’s Memorial Park is another.

Learn: Exhibit The flexibility of the convention center space allows for many different types of activities to happen within the same facility. Shown here is the possibility to showcase new technologies and interact with the youth of the community through a “Robotics Day”.
