Friends, Think about your life for a moment and identify the first great leader that comes to your mind. What makes him or her such a proficient leader? Was it her attitude? Was it his communication skills? Did she present a strong front in the face of adversity? Did he inspire people to achieve great things? Great leaders leave an indelible mark on us. And unfortunately, the same can be said for weak leaders. Leadership is a valuable skill, especially in our youth ministries.

A NOTE FROM ANDY

We are excited to present this edition of YM360 The Magazine focusing entirely on leadership. Our prayer is that you will benefit from the practical and experienced perspectives within, and that your leadership will empower and encourage those around you. You’ll also find more than just leadership articles in this edition of the YM360 The Magazine. Inside, you’ll find an overview of some of our ministry resources and events. One of our values is that we empower discipleship. Everything we do, whether it’s a 52-week Bible study, a 4-week devotion, or GENERATE, is aimed at leading teenagers closer to Christ. We want to partner with you to do this more effectively. If you see something we can help you with, don’t hesitate to call, email, or LiveChat. TRENDS & CULTURE

KIDS IN HIGH-RISK SITUATIONS ARE MORE LIKELY TO BECOME VIOLENT ADULTS

1

A new study is showing for the first time that high-risk situations are having a negative impact on students much later in life. “High-risk situations” are defined as “living in big cities, experiencing physical or sexual abuse, migration, cannabis consumption, or problematic alcohol use as a child or teen.” The study shows that these scenarios lead to a higher risk of becoming a violently aggressive adult. The study done by the Max Planck Institute of Experimental Medicine in Germany found that children and adolescents who grow up with one or more of these environmental risk factors are “likely to resort to violence, aggression, and crime as adults, regardless of an underlying mental illness.” These high-risk conditions led to a “five times’ higher likelihood of a person being hospitalized” because of violent behavior. WHAT’S FOR BREAKFAST?

and lunch? and dinner?

According to a new study of 2,000 families, the average 13- to 19-year-old spends almost 135 hours per year thinking about food and what the next meal will be. (This is not news to anyone who has been on a church retreat with middle school boys.) This means that over the seven years of the typical teenage lifespan, teenagers will rack up 945 hours, or 39 solid days, with food on their brains. The culprit may not be what you think. As many as 46 percent of teens included in the study said they watch cooking shows to gain food inspiration, and 70% said their parents are the most significant source of their food knowledge. NO , REALLY, YOUR TEENAGERS PROBABLY

AREN’T ON FACEBOOK

In the last three years, Facebook has seen a loss of over 20% of its US teenage users. Barely half of all teenagers report using Facebook at all, a decline from 71% in 2015. Compare that to 85% of teenagers who say they use YouTube. Annual household income seems to be a predictor of Facebook usage. The lower the family income, the more likely a teenager is to use Facebook. Barely a quarter of students whose annual household income was over $75,000 reported being active on Facebook. DO SMART PHONES

& VIDEO GAMES MAKE TEENAGERS

SADDER? MAYBE.

There is some new research that strengthens the existing evidence that smartphones and video games can lead to a decrease in mental health in teenagers. But this study comes at it from a different angle. Researchers at Stony Brook University studied data from a survey of nearly 3,000 teens from 2014 to 2017. They asked how much time they spent on four different types of screen activities: watching TV, gaming, messaging their friends on social networking sites, and using the internet. Here’s what the study found that is interesting on several levels: “As with other research, the authors found that more screen time in any shape or form was associated with a greater risk of reporting depressive symptoms. But in this analysis, the relationship between screen time and depression was explained by the teens’ reported insomnia or relatively less sleep. In other words, the more screen time someone reported, the less time they reported sleeping, which was then associated with greater feelings of depression.” SOURCE: independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/popular-teenagers-anxious-adults-more-likely-mental-health-study-child-development-university-a7906481.html

STUDENT LEADERSHIP:

THE KEYT TO

BUILDING OWNERSHIP

IN YOUR YOUTH MINISTRY

Student leadership is an often overlooked but essential element of youth ministry. Why do we neglect it? Maybe it’s the time, energy, and investment involved versus the sometimes-intangible payoffs. However, even though student leadership may play a small part of most youth groups, it’s the key to building ownership in your student ministry. Here are four ways to think about increasing ownership in your ministry through establishing student leadership groups.

ENLIST STUDENTS TO BE IN LEADERSHIP

The best leaders are not always the first to volunteer. Many students with leadership potential are already serving in other areas. They may be hesitant to sign up for something else. The same students that serve in leadership at the church where I serve are also leaders in athletics, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and First Priority clubs at school. So, you might consider enlisting students vs. waiting for volunteers. Look around you for students who are stepping up and showing leadership potential. Incorporate your ministry team in helping you identify potential student leaders.

EXPLAIN THE COST AND RESPONSIBILITY OF LEADERSHIP

Students and youth workers alike must understand that leadership comes with a cost. Students are responsible to God and others for how they lead. To present the cost and responsibility of leadership to students, I have developed a leadership covenant. This is a single page document that each student takes home and prays over before signing. It underscores the importance of prayer, Bible study, modeling Christian character, developing spiritual gifts, and witnessing. After the first meeting, students are given an opportunity to step away if God is not leading them to serve.

EXPLORE STUDENTS’ SPIRITUAL GIFTS

Serving as a leader is not going to look the same for every student. Different students have different strengths and

weaknesses. This is why student leadership serves an essential role in developing students through personal growth and discipleship. As students learn their strengths and weaknesses, they will grow as individuals. This is why student leadership often does not have immediate, tangible results. As youth leaders, we will never know the impact that we have had on a student concerning their growth both spiritually and in leadership.

EMPOWER STUDENTS TO SERVE

Empowering students to serve is the final step in developing student leaders. This is a phase that many youth leaders struggle with. At this point, some level of control and responsibility must be given over to students. This can be a messy but rewarding process. It’s crucial in this process to create spaces for students to serve based on their spiritual gifts. In doing this, we allow students to play to their strengths and to have success in leadership endeavors. Setting students up for success is essential in helping them step out and lead in the future. Through this process, the connection of ownership occurs. The movement from “the youth group down the street” to “the youth group which I attend,” to “my youth group” is accomplished while encouraging, teaching, and empowering students to lead. And that is worth the effort to developing student leaders.

WHAT I LEARNED ABOUT YOUTH MINISTRY LEADERSHIP IN THE MARINE CORPS BY ANDY BLANKS

Once upon a time, I served in the Marines. I enjoyed those years a lot, and remember the experiences fondly. I had a conversation not too long ago with a youth worker who also served in the Marines. We had a good time reflecting on some of the things we did and learned. Through this conversation, I realized, once again, how blessed I was to serve under some remarkable leaders.

TRUTH 1: LEADERS MUST EQUIP THEIR PEOPLE WITH THE TOOLS NECESSARY TO BE PROFICIENT.

This conversation got my wheels turning a bit, and I found myself trying to define what made these men’s leadership so remarkable.

In the Marines, I was the team leader of a mortar crew. Time and time again, our platoon commander went out of his way to provide us the tools to do our job with

I was able to condense my thoughts into three points I thought I’d pass along. For those of you who lead youth ministry assistants, interns, and adult volunteers, I hope these truths will give you something to think about.

FEATURE excellence. Sometimes he lobbied for extra rounds so we could train more. Sometimes he arranged space for us on a truck, so we didn’t have to march with all our gear. Regardless of the circumstance, this leader made sure we had what was necessary not just to do our job at a baseline level, but to excel at what we did. Equipping Marines looks a little different than equipping staff or adult volunteers. (You’re probably not out securing high-explosives for your small group teachers. Though your junior high boys would love you forever if you did.) What does equipping look like in your context? Here are a few thoughts: Training (Staff)—You need to provide training for your staff. This could be conferences for your team, like CLEAR by YM360. Or if budget is an issue, why not send one team member and have him or her come back and give presentations of what was learned? Training (Volunteers)—Volunteers need to be trained. After all, many are expert accountants, teachers, mechanics, etc., but may not be expert small group Bible study teachers. It’s up to you to equip them with the right training. Books—What if you fought for a little budget money to provide books or e-books to your volunteers and staff? There is a wealth of knowledge available to help equip your people to be successful in leading students.

TRUTH 2: EQUIP YOUR PEOPLE. THEN GET OUT OF THE WAY. Marines believe in their training. Marines train hard so that when the time comes to make it happen, they are absolutely prepared to get the job done. We had a particularly “colorful” group of guys that made up the three mortar teams in our squad. We were a little rough around the edges, especially by Marine standards. We didn’t do things the conventional way. And maybe our uniforms weren’t always in the best shape. But, we were EXPERTS at the actual task of getting effective fire on an enemy target. There weren’t many teams better than us in the Marines, something I’m still proud of today. Now, our leaders could have insisted that we conformed a little tighter to standard operating procedures. But our platoon sergeant and our platoon commander realized we were performing at a high rate of proficiency. We were trained well. We were motivated. And we got the job done. It is imperative to have the right people on your team. And it is essential to equip them. But once you do, it is vitally important to get the heck out of their way and let them do their job. Micro-managing has no

5

place in the military or your ministry. Teach your team how you expect the job to be done. Then, allow them to complete the task following their personality, giftings, and priorities. As long as the work is completed at or above the standards you have set, don’t let yourself get bogged down in how it was finished.

TRUTH 3: INFORMATION IS POWER. SHARE IT. One of the single most significant issues I noticed with leadership in the Marines (and I imagine this spans across all branches of the military) is that far too many leaders misused the power of information. Information is powerful in a positive sense when you pass it along to those you lead. Information is also powerful when it is not passed on. But it can have an adverse effect. Why do some leaders withhold information? Hoarding information inflates a leader’s feeling of importance. These leaders want people to have an exaggerated sense of reliance on them. However, this situation creates undesirable attitudes in those being led: feelings of uncertainty, low morale, and distrust often result. Our goal should be to be as open as possible with information. The open communication of information creates motivated, informed team members, whether that is staff members or volunteers. Individuals who feel like a leader is a conduit for important info are much more likely to embrace the direction and vision communicated by such a leader. You will find that open communication of information leads to heightened feelings of trust between leaders and those whom they lead. (Before you say it, I am acutely aware that there is information that simply cannot be passed down to those you lead. However, if you are in the habit of sharing information, your team will understand when it becomes apparent you were withholding specific knowledge from them.) So these are a few things I learned from great Marine Corps leaders. How can you take these truths and incorporate them into how you lead? ANDY BLANKS is the co-founder and Publisher for YM360. THOUGHTS ON BEING A GREAT LEADER One of the favorite aspects of my role in my years of ministry has been equipping and encouraging young leaders. I try to put as many tools in their toolbox as possible while they serve in our ministry. I love seeing them sent out to serve elsewhere and I pray that our time together has helped advance them in their leadership abilities. Here are 18 of the reminders I share with them on being a great leader. 1. IF YOU ARE TO LEAD OTHERS, YOU MUST FIRST LEAD YOURSELF. Often the first reason that a leader is unsuccessful in their role and mission is their inability to lead themselves. Before we are effective at leading others, we must become effective at managing and leading the person in the mirror. 2. IF SERVING IS BENEATH YOU, LEADING IS ABOVE YOU. There are three types of leaders, those that put on a crown, a cape, or an apron. Jesus showed us the apron is the best way. I am reminded of Phil 2:1-11 and the example we were given in Christ. He humbled himself and took on the form of a servant. 3. A SENSE OF ENTITLEMENT WILL KILL YOU, BUT SEEKING WISDOM FROM ABOVE WILL GROW YOU. James 3:13-18 reminds us that wisdom from above is first pure, peaceable, gentle, open to reason (teachable) full of mercy, produces good fruits (similar to fruits of the spirit), and is impartial and sincere. Years ago, I heard this little nugget from by Dr. Bill Bright and it has always stuck with me: “Pride is the doorway to every other sin.” 4. LEADERSHIP CAN ONLY FILL THE SPACE THAT YOUR EGO HAS SURRENDERED. When John the Baptist sees the long-awaited Messiah he clearly understands that he needs to step back. It is time for him to decrease so Christ can increase. (John 3:30) If we want wisdom from above, we have to set aside our ego. 5. SET THE PACE. Great leaders don’t run merely to see how fast they can go; they set the pace for those following them. I picked up the motto somewhere along my leadership journey, “A true leader knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.”

6. CREATE THE RIGHT KIND OF CULTURE. Culture is a vital ingredient to any winning team or organization. It usually starts with leadership but has to be owned by teams to matter. Culture is more than just putting up sayings on the wall; it is what your team is guided by daily. 7. GREAT LEADERS LISTEN. Real leaders know that time spent listing is well invested. This does not come easily to many of us. Remember this: always listen, but still lead. 8. GREAT LEADERS DON’T MAKE ALL THE DECISIONS. You don’t have to be a dictator to be effective. Guide your team toward success. Remember, many hands make a load light. But, again, don’t vacate the role of leadership for consensus. 9. LEADERS SEE AROUND CORNERS. To be successful in leadership, you should be able to see what needs to happen before everyone else does. Be prepared and think ahead. 10. EVERYONE WANTS A CHAMPION. Teams, companies, platoons…everyone wants to know they have a leader that has their back. This does not mean always agreeing with them, but still championing them. In the end, if you want loyal teams, be loyal to your teams. As you lead, work at this skill every day. Find ways to apply some of these basic principles to your leadership and see where the Lord takes you and your teams. We are cheering you on! J. ARE

YOU AN

UNAPPROACHABLE

LEADER?

One of the things I’ve noticed as I’ve gotten older is the difference in how ministers and parents approach me. When I first started in ministry, I felt that parents looked down at me because of my youth. And I felt other ministers didn’t always give me the benefit of the doubt. What this created was a passive aggressive interaction with the people I needed the most. I was often on the defense. As I grew older, got married, and joined the ranks of parenthood, I felt my interactions with adults, both parents and other ministers, needed to improve. And, over time, they did. However, for me to solely attribute this change to the fact that I’m older, married, and a parent would be naive. The change hasn’t come because of time but because of a personality makeover. Here are a few transitions I had to undergo to make myself more approachable as a leader:

FROM PRIDEFUL TO HUMBLE

I used to make it all about me. Whenever someone gave feedback or shared an idea, I got defensive. I thought they

were telling me to change, and in my early twenties I had it all together (lol!). I realized that if I wanted the church to grow, I can’t make it about me, I have to make it about God. And the way to make it about God is to let the whole church in on the process, not just one member. Are all ideas good ones? No. But then again the great ones that others have brought to the table have taken us to a new level.

FROM TALKING TO LISTENING

Whenever people came to me with a complaint or to vent, I thought I needed to solve the problem. But there are a lot of issues we don’t need to resolve but need to acknowledge. There have been a lot of parents, and even ministers who have come to me just wanting to be heard and I have needed to be there to merely offer them compassion. I’m not saying we shouldn’t try and be a part of the solution where possible, but the best thing to do at many times is to listen.

FROM SUSPICION TO TRUST

When I first started ministry I had this insane thought that people could read my mind. So when it came to expectations and responsibilities, communication was sometimes lacking. This lack of communication leads to disappointment and frustration. In turn, a void was created which was an open door for assumptions. If we don’t communicate clearly to our ministers and parents, they will create an expectation of us. Things won’t get done. People won’t ask you questions because they think if they can’t get it right, you’ll only be mad at them. This way is not fair for others and not fair for you. The takeaway from all of this is a simple question. We need to continuously ask ourselves, “Am I approachable”? If we can’t build a reputation for humility, compassion, and trust, then we aren’t leaders worth following. The best way to work on those attributes is prayer, accountability, and constant communication with those whom we trust. THE THREE D’S OF DELEGATION It’s not news to anyone that delegation is a crucial aspect of leadership. But it’s also one of the areas where people seem to get stuck. How often have you known you’ve needed to delegate something but didn’t because you couldn’t seem to let go? You can probably also remember a time when you delegated something, and it turned out so poorly that you A) ended up having to do it yourself, and B) decided that you were done delegating. DELEGATION DOESN’T HAVE TO BE SUCH A HIT-ORMISS PROPOSITION. IT CAN BE DONE WELL. AND WHEN IT IS DONE WELL, IT’S A POWERFUL TOOL IN THE LEADER’S TOOLBOX. How can we begin to think about delegation in a way that moves us toward success? Here are three suggestions (The 3 D’s of Delegation) that should help to get you heading in the right direction: DEFINE SUCCESS Part of why delegation goes so poorly is that we don’t clearly define what success looks like for the individual to whom we’ve delegated a task. What is the end goal? What are our expectations? What metrics will determine successful completion of the task? Are there specific considerations or rules that must be observed while accomplishing the task? Defining success is the first part of making sure delegation is fruitful.

DETERMINE NOT TO MICROMANAGE One of the critical leadership principles I’ve learned through the years is to “surround yourself with good people, train them to succeed, and let them serve according to their unique capabilities.” This means that very often, the task you delegate will not be done exactly like you would do it. As leaders, we have to be OK with this. Our way is not the only way. We empower people by clearly defining success, then freeing them to achieve success in their way. DEBRIEF THE RESULT Because many of us are moving so fast, we don’t often take the time to debrief delegated projects. It’s a shame because this is how we build proficiency in those we lead. By affirming proficiency and graciously pointing out inefficiency, we help those we lead become experts at the tasks we delegate. When we fail to debrief, we leave our team members unsure of how well the task was completed and could lead them to repeat ineffective or inefficient practices as a result. For some people delegating may be the trickiest part of leadership. But with intentionality and a good plan, it doesn’t have to be. BY ANDY BLANKS

POPULAR

CONNECT is a great option for community building within your group. Groups in this option (called “villages”) will be in Bible Study for part of the day and will also participate in recreational games. The Bible Study will be led by your adult leaders.

SERVE allows your group to get off campus and serve at a mission project for much of the day with one of our Community Partners (our team will take care of the details).

EXPLORE

Do you have adults who are willing to come to camp but don’t want to teach the Bible Study? If so, GUIDE is for you. Instead of your adults leading your students in Bible Study, recreation group building activities, and worship pre-gatherings, one of our Village Guides (a GENERATE staff member) will do so.

EXPLORE allows you to decide how you want to spend your day from 10:00 am through dinner. If you want to be off campus enjoying what the area has to offer, go for it!

GUIDE

One of the best ways to learn to be a disciple-maker is to learn alongside other disciple-makers, and LEAD TEAM perfectly displays that. Your group (10th grade students and older) will participate in staff devotions, meetings, development, worship, and areas of concentration such as production, recreation, and support roles. (Max of 20 people per week.)

YOUTH MINISTRY RESOURCES TO SERVE YOU AND YOUR MINISTRY

YM360 is the premiere provider of youth ministry resources, training events, and live student events. We are committed to providing youth workers, like you, with an ever-expanding offering of Gospel-centered, Bible based, easy-to-use, and amazingly priced resources which are innovative, creative, and relevant. From Sundays to Retreats and all in between, YM360 is here to serve you with great resources.

FOR YOU AND YOUR LEADERS THE 7 BEST PRACTICES FOR TEACHING TEENAGERS THE BIBLE

CONSIDER THIS

To say “Youth ministry can be challenging” is an understatement. Few callings have as many variables. Discipling teenagers is a tough calling. But what about the dynamics with the staff and leadership of your church? What about the challenges of engaging with your students’ parents? And let’s not get started on the way that ministry impacts your family. Youth ministry is not for the faint of heart. Especially if you’re just getting started which is why Consider This is such an important book.

We know you desire to lead students closer to God. Many ask, “What’s the most effective way to do this?” We believe it is by teaching students the Word of God. The Bible is God’s main way of making Himself and His ways known, and your students need sound Bible teaching now more than ever. This resource offers you seven ultra-practical and deeply meaningful “practices” you can use to help teach the Bible in a transformative and dynamic way. This is a perfect book to place in the hands of your leaders.

DISCIPLE: THE ORDINARY PERSON’S GUIDE TO DISCIPLING TEENAGERS

This is your youth ministry evangelism and discipleship strategy for a post-Christian culture. If your ministry desires to reach teenagers growing up in the post-Christian culture we find ourselves in, you and your entire team will benefit greatly from this resource. Benjamin Kerns uses a thought-provoking twist on a beloved parable as the framework for a rich examination of the cultural landscape, helping you reach lost students and know how to begin discipling them.

Written by one of the leading voices in youth ministry, Dr. Allen Jackson, Disciple is a practical, down-to-earth guide for leading teenagers to pursue Christ. No matter if you’re a veteran or a newbie, Disciple will help challenge and equip you and your team to get serious about disciple-making.

Covenant students, faculty, and staff are eager to tackle the difficult questions of our time and are passionate about living out their faith in every area of life—in business, ministry, school, and home. For more than fifty years, Covenant College has shaped curricula and experiences to equip generations of men and women to embrace their vocations as they serve the church, their communities, and a changing world. Ask hard questions. Pursue your calling. Join us at covenant.edu/ExpectMore.
