What is success in youth ministry? And how is it measured? These questions are tricky because competing principles are often in play. For example, one definition of success we might agree upon is the faithful preaching of God’s Word in your ministry. While, to many leaders, another indicator of success is how well you’re doing by numerical standards.

A NOTE FROM LES

If we’re not careful, the concept of “success” can be a slippery slope. Let’s face it: success in local church ministry is oftentimes compared to success in the business world, using metrics that were never intended to measure the success of the work we do. What if, instead, we measured success by such metrics as how we pray for our students, in our theology, and how Bible-saturated our ministry is? In our planning and organization? Or in our discipleship efforts as we help students know God and make Him known? This edition of YM360 the Magazine is focused on helping you with a few of these different ways of defining success, as well as sharing with you more tools and resources to help you lead your ministry well. I want you to know what a true honor it is to serve and equip you. As youth leaders ourselves, we love helping you and believe the work you are doing is of eternal importance. Let us know if we can crush any hassles for you, or if we can partner with you in any way. All His Best, Les Bradford YM360 CEO / co-founder

How can a teenager pass a challenging test at school yet still make seemingly ridiculous decisions no sensible adult would make? Chalk it up to the teenage brain. These contradictions observed by Dr. Frances Jensen occur in part because teenage brains do not fully mature until the mid- to late-20s. Especially the frontal lobe and the limbic system, which control decision-making, risk-taking, impulsivity, sexual behavior, and emotion. Because of this, teenagers are built to be novelty-seeking at this point in their lives. Their frontal lobe isn’t able to say, “That’s a bad idea, don’t do that.” That’s not happening to the extent it will in adulthood. Explains a lot, doesn’t it?

USING PHONE AT NIGHT TEASING TEENS ABOUT

MAY BE BAD FOR WEIGHT MAY TEENAGERS’ MENTAL HEALTH

New research examined changes in late-night mobile phone use, sleep, and mental health indicators over three years in a large sample of teenagers. It found that teenagers’ late-night mobile phone use was directly linked to poor quality sleep, which in turn led to poorer mental health outcomes, reduced coping, and lowered self-esteem.

CAUSE LASTING HARM

Dr Lynette Vernon, lead researcher, said, “Heavy mobile phone use becomes a problem when it overtakes essential aspects of adolescent life . . . . Late night phone use directly contributed to poor sleep habits, which over time led to declines in overall wellbeing and mental health.”

A new study finds that teenagers who are often shamed or teased because of their weight may be more likely to become obese adults who struggle with poor body image. The study found that teens who are bullied about their weight are more likely to become emotional eaters. This doesn’t just apply to teasing by bullies at school. Teasing from parents can have major effects as well. Over the long term, women were more affected than men by weight-based teasing from family members, the researchers said. But both males and females were more likely to develop unhealthy eating habits and obesity later if they were teased as teenagers.

GROUNDING TEENS FROM

SOCIAL MEDIA

MAY ACTUALLY

MAKE THINGS WORSE

Teenagers forced to take a break from social media lose more than just a few days gossiping with friends, according to new research. Grounding a teenager from social media makes an immediate impact. But the study found that 38% of students who were forced to take a break were “more likely to report being anxious about being away from social media and more likely to increase their social media postings after being allowed back on their networks.” Researchers found that grounding took away from potential emotional support and from access to personal information among friends, as well as current events. TIPS TO MAKE YOUR

DISCIPLE-MAKING MORE SUCCESSFUL

Being in youth ministry is all about watching teenagers be transformed by an increasing closeness to Christ. This is the essence of discipleship. And as youth workers, we have a significant role in disciple-making. We should all want to be as effective, or as successful, as we can be in leading teenagers to be more like Jesus. Here are a few tips on how to make this happen.

1. YOU MUST BE INTENTIONAL

Discipleship doesn’t just happen. You may know the names of all your students. But being friends with them doesn’t mean they’re being discipled. True discipleship takes intentionality. You have to have a plan in place.

2. YOU MUST BE IN FOR THE LONG HAUL

Discipleship is a marathon, not a sprint. It doesn’t just happen, and it doesn’t happen quickly. If you want the opportunity to be able to speak into the lives of teenagers, you must be willing to put in the time to grow real, authentic disciple-making relationships with them.

3. YOU MUST BE OPEN TO THE HARD PARTS OF DISCIPLESHIP

I’ve noticed over the years that many adults will engage in a teenager’s life with no real thought that the advantages of relationship would ever be mutual. If we’re going to ask students to allow us to impact their lives, we have to open up our lives to being impacted by our students. If we want our students to see us as their friends, we need to be open to a friendship that reciprocates. Do we need to still be adults? Of course. Being a friend with a 13 year old doesn’t mean acting like one. We simply need to be open to being moved or challenged or even convicted by our students in the same way we expect them to be open to this from us.

5. YOU MUST SHARE COMMON SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCES OUTSIDE OF CHURCH

“Secular” experiences are vital to relationship, such as hanging out at a sporting event, going to the movies, eating out, etc. But the shared “spiritual” experiences that happen outside the church are vital to discipleship. To be most effective at discipleship, you need to serve together and minister together. You need to get out in your community and be the hands and feet of Christ.

I’ve seen people so fired up about taking on a discipleship group, only to be completely bummed out a few months later. Why? Because their expectations were completely off. While teenagers are amazing in so many ways, they can also be flaky and noncommittal. (So can many adults!) And younger students are at the whim of their parents, who may or may not be very reliable themselves. When we open ourselves up to engaging in discipleship, we open ourselves up to occasionally being letdown or disappointed. But discipling students is still SO worth it! Realistic expectations going in can help fight against some of the natural disappointment that often occurs in disciple-making.

4. YOU MUST ALSO BE OPEN TO THE EASY PARTS OF DISCIPLESHIP

FEATURE

WHAT IT TAKES TO

“WIN” IN YOUTH MINISTRY

BY ANDY BLANKS

.COM OR CALL 888.969.6360

FEATURE

Winning is fun. It doesn’t matter what you win. When you give of yourself to anything, and then you succeed, it feels great. The same is true in youth ministry. Now, we definitely have to be careful how we use words like “success” when it comes to ministry (we’re talking about Kingdom success here, not anything earthly, e.g., numbers, fame, compensation, etc.). At the same time, we should WANT to be as effective as we absolutely can. After all, leading students closer to Christ is a holy calling. While we know the Spirit ultimately guides and empowers discipleship, we play a role. And I don’t know about you, but I want to see teenagers grow in their faith because of the role I play, not in spite of it.

5

planning stage. (And consequently, this seems to be where most people fail.) You must have a goal (a defined “win”). But you must also have a roadmap, or a blueprint, for achieving your goal. How will you get from start to finish? What steps will you take? What are the challenges? How will you delegate authority?

NEXT, YOU HAVE TO EXECUTE!

I want each of us as youth workers to know the feeling that comes with being effective, or successful, when it comes to our ministry efforts. And so I briefly want to look at what goes into a youth ministry “win.”

This is game day! This is you actually doing the work to make your plan a reality. This is enough of a challenge as to have its own article. But this is the actual executing of your plan to achieve your win. If your win is discipleship based, your plan may call for weekly Bible Study or something similar. The executing stage is actually doing the things you’ve planned to do.

FIRST, THE WIN HAS TO BE DEFINED.

DON’T FORGET ABOUT OVERCOMING ADVERSITY!

In most sports, to win means to score more points than your opponents. Golf is weird and so you try to score fewer points. But there are other categories of wins besides sports. You might define a parenting win as getting your kids to pick up their clothes without being asked. Defining a youth ministry win may be something as simple as “a successful weekend retreat” or “a parent meeting with 50% attendance.” Or maybe a win is something as complex as seeing measurable spiritual growth in a specific student. These are all examples of defining your wins.

There will always be variables that pop up that test your ability to execute your plan. The van breaks down. There is a choir concert scheduled two weeks before your event that no one told you about. You get sick the morning of your big outreach event. These are the rules, not the exceptions! You will almost always have to overcome adversity. Rarely will everything go exactly as planned. If you want to win, you have to be able to adapt and overcome.

The point is to intentionally and prayerfully define your win. This is where you seek God’s vision for your ministry and clearly define it for your team. The old adage is true: “If you aim at nothing, you’ll hit your mark.”

THEN, YOU HAVE TO PLAN/PREPARE. In football, coaches have their game plan, and they practice in order to execute their plan when the game starts. In business, if your win is defined as getting a raise, you prepare a proposal to your supervisor. If you’re in the doghouse with your spouse, your “win” may be to get out!  And your plan may include an apology, a note, and/or a special gift. If your youth ministry “win” is defined as a successful outreach event, you may tailor your content and strategy to focus on drawing “X” % of visitors. This is the

FINALLY, DON’T EVER FORGET THE IMPORTANCE OF CELEBRATING A WIN. Think about the teams that win the big games. They go nuts! They celebrate. Too often, we’re so busy or exhausted, we forget to come back around and celebrate our wins. This becomes increasingly important the more people you have on your team helping you. If you consistently fail to celebrate your wins, you’ll burn your people out. People want to know they are a part of something big and exciting. Make sure you plan time to celebrate the wins with your team. Hopefully you can take this and apply it to your own youth ministry. Here’s to more wins in your future.

YM360 Publisher and Co-Founder Andy Blanks has teamed up with Rick Burgess, best-selling author and cohost of the nationally syndicated morning show Rick and Bubba, to author two exciting books, How To Be A Man and How To Be A Man: Student Edition. These books challenge and equip teenagers and adults alike to pursue a masculinity grounded in the person of Christ. Here, Rick and Andy discuss why they wrote the books. AN D Y: You and I both share a passion for seeing guys

imitate Jesus and live as God desires them to live. This is something the Lord has really laid on our hearts the last few years, isn’t it?

R IC K : Absolutely. As you know, this started in our own church with a movement of men who began to take seriously what it means to live out a Christ-centered masculinity. As I travel and speak across the country, I see this happening all over. Men are waking up. They are realizing that they’re not really pursuing their faith as God has called them to. AN D Y: After years of discipling teenagers and just watch-

ing how they engage with the world around them and observing their relationships with their dads, I approached you last year about co-authoring a book for teenagers

YM360 EQUIPS TEENAGERS AND ADULTS ALIKE TO PURSUE CHRIST-CENTERED MASCULINITY

that challenges them to become the young men that God is calling them to be. You pushed back and said that if we were going to do one for teenagers we needed to do one for men too. R I C K : That’s right. I’m blessed to be able to speak and

teach in churches and men’s conferences around the country. What I was seeing in men is the same thing you were seeing in teenagers. A lot of men know they aren’t purposefully pursuing their faith or a Christ-centered masculinity. I’m often asked what I would recommend to help address this. I wanted to be able to put something in their hands that pointed them toward Jesus as the model for what it means to be a man. And so the idea for these two books came together. AN D Y: I love that we decided to do one for adults and

one for teenagers. I get pretty excited about the idea that a dad can walk through this with his son, or a youth worker can walk through this with a group of guys.

R I C K : Oh yeah. That’s the part that I love. Obviously, a teenager can go through the guy’s book by himself. And a man can go through the adult version by himself. But the real transformation happens when you watch a dad lead a son or an adult leader lead a small group through this content.

LIVE LIKE JESUS.

How To Be A Man: Pursuing Christ-centered Masculinity [Student Edition] is a 40-day devotional experience that will challenge teenage guys to a more passionate pursuit of growing in to the man God is calling them to be.

Culture sends so many confusing messages about masculinity, and when you add faith to the mix, it gets even more complicated. What does it mean to be a man, anyway? And more importantly, what does it mean to be a teenage guy who seeks to become the young man God wants him to be? Using 8 core characteristics, this devotional experience will challenge teenage guys to exemplify these in their own lives as they passionately pursue a Christ-centered manhood.

• Identity • Integrity

• Purpose • Surrender

HOW TO BE A MAN [Student Edition] features: 40-daily devotional experiences. "Processing the Pursuit" section at the end of each day to challenge teenagers to apply daily learnings. In-depth study of 8 core characteristics of Jesus teenagers can seek to exemplify in their own lives.

10 ARTICLE MAKE AN EFFORT TO RECRUIT LEADERS WHO ARE UNLIKE YOU. You probably already know that the best way to recruit leaders is to invite them personally. The problem is that our default mode is to invite leaders who tend to be like us. If we only recruit leaders to our team who are like us, then we’re in danger of building teams that can connect only to teenagers who are like us.

THINK ABOUT THE KINDS OF TEENAGERS GOD MIGHT BE CALLING YOU TO REACH. Have you ever stopped to think about what kinds of teenagers God is asking you to reach? Maybe God is asking you to start focusing more on the teenagers in your church’s neighborhood--and those teenagers might not think, act, and look just like you. How can you add members to your team that can connect with those teenagers and their families? It might be as simple as adding some leaders who can help you reach those kids who skateboard in your church parking lot after school. Or the changes to your team might be deeper (and more difficult), such as looking at the racial diversity of your neighborhood as compared with the racial diversity of your leadership team.

HOW TO

SUCCESSFULLY BUILD A TEAM OF

VOLUNTEERS Our youth ministry once organized a service day for our teenagers at a local food bank. Mark was one of the students who had been assigned to ride with me. As we walked to the parking lot together, he asked if John, a youth leader on our team, was coming. When I said, “no,” Mark replied, “That’s too bad. He has a lot cooler music in his car than you do.” While some might have been offended, I wasn’t. I was grateful. Mark was a pretty unique teenager, and while I enjoyed hanging out with him, no one on our team could connect with him like John.

PRAY FOR (AND INVITE) LEADERS WHO ARE BETTER AT YOUTH MINISTRY THAN YOU. This might be hard to hear, so I’ll say it quickly: You’re probably not the best small group or Bible Study teacher in your church. I’m not the best in my church. Thankfully, our churches didn’t hire us for this. Our job as youth pastors is to create an environment where high school students can meet Jesus and grow in their relationship with Him. A big part of that is building a team of youth leaders who may actually be better at relational ministry or leading a Bible Study than we are.

Certain students tend to gravitate toward certain leaders because of their personality, background, or age. If students tend to connect with leaders they can identify with, what does that say about the kind of team of leaders we should be building? In case it’s not something you’ve ever considered before, here are three things to keep in mind as you build your team:

WHY CAMP SHOULD BE A PART OF A SUCCESSFUL YOUTH MINISTRY STRATEGY

A few years ago I read a blog where someone proposed that camps were dead. The author’s opinion was that ministries don’t want to put the necessary time or resources into camps, choosing instead to focus their time on things that have more “value.” As someone who has spent the last 25 years leading and crafting experiences, including summer camps, the article intrigued me. I have such a different perspective on experiences like camp and their value to Kingdom advancement. From my seat, camp is far from dead. It’s just the opposite, actually. Here are three reasons why I believe in camp, and believe it should be a part of any successful youth ministry strategy. JESUS WENT ON RETREAT. SO SHOULD WE. As you read the Scriptures, you see Jesus often retreating from the crowds and the “normal” flow of life. He goes away and spends intimate time with His followers or with His Father. I believe that model still has great value. When teenagers remove themselves from the distractions of their everyday lives, they tend to hear the Lord more clearly. Spending focused time in healthy Biblical community helps them understand the call to serve and to make the truth of the Gospel known.

STUDENTS LEARN THE GOSPEL AND ARE CHALLENGED TO MAKE THE GOSPEL KNOWN. Well, at least that’s the hope. And I can personally say that this is our hope for GENERATE Camp by YM360. At GENERATE, students hear the Gospel and grasp their mission of making the Gospel known, embracing the call to be disciple-makers. We want students to not just be consumers of the Gospel, but be conduits of Gospel advancement! But whether you do your own camp or do camp with another ministry, make sure that the Gospel is taught and that students are challenged to share it with the world. The reason I believe camp is so vital to a successful youth ministry strategy is that the one-week camp experience has the ability to impact the other 51-weeks of the year. If you can see this realized, camp can become a key component to your church’s student ministry strategy.

STUDENTS ARE CHANGED AT CAMP. Every summer, all summer long, I get to the end of a camp and hear youth workers talking about all God did in the life of their group and in their students. Some students come to Christ for the first time, and there are countless other decisions that come in these intimate times with God. Camp is about lifting up the name of Jesus and letting the Spirit do what only He can do.

20 YOUTH MINISTRY RESOURCES

WE INVEST INTENTIONALLY.

The YM360 team believes in the next generation of Christ-followers and the people who lead them. Students don’t just have potential for the future; they have power for now. Everything we create is specifically geared toward laying a foundation of faith that will last long into adulthood. Students matter deeply to God. And we’re grateful to be a small part of empowering the next generation to impact the world for Christ. YM360 is the premiere provider of youth ministry resources, training events, and live student events. We are committed to providing youth workers, like you, with an ever-expanding offering of Gospel-centered, Bible-based, easy-to-use, and amazingly priced resources that are innovative, creative, and relevant. From Sundays to retreats and all in between, YM360 is here to serve you with great resources.

FOR YOU AND YOUR LEADERS THE 7 BEST PRACTICES FOR TEACHING TEENAGERS THE BIBLE

CONSIDER THIS

To say, “Youth ministry can be challenging,” is an understatement. Few callings have as many variables. Discipling teenagers is a tough calling. But what about the dynamics with the staff and leadership of your church? What about the challenges of engaging with your students’ parents? And let’s not get started on the way that ministry impacts your family. Youth ministry is not for the faint of heart. Especially if you’re just getting started. Which is why Consider This is such an important book.

We know you desire to lead students closer to God. Many ask, “What’s the most effective way to do this?” We believe it is by teaching students the Word of God. The Bible is God’s main way of making Himself and His ways known and your students need sound Bible teaching now more than ever. This resource offers you seven ultra-practical and deeply meaningful “practices” you can use to help teach the Bible in a transformative and dynamic way. This is a perfect book to place in the hands of your leaders.

PEN TO PALACE

DISCIPLE: THE ORDINARY PERSON’S GUIDE TO DISCIPLING TEENAGERS

This is your youth ministry evangelism and discipleship strategy for a post-christian culture. If your ministry desires to reach teenagers growing up in the post-Christian culture we find ourselves in, you and your entire team will benefit greatly from this resource. Benjamin Kerns uses a thought-provoking twist on a beloved parable as the framework for a rich examination of the cultural landscape, helping you reach lost students and know how to begin discipling them.

Written by one of the leading voices in youth ministry, Dr. Allen Jackson. Disciple is a practical, down-to-earth guide for leading teenagers to pursue Christ. No matter if you’re a veteran or a newbie, Disciple will help challenge and equip you and your team to get serious about disciple-making.
