Did you know relationships are important to teenagers? Of course you do. You can’t be in youth ministry for more than an afternoon and fail to realize this. Relationships are the currency of the teenage experience. Guess what? The same is true for youth ministry.

A NOTE FROM ANDY

Think about the relationships that are woven into your ministry: relationships with students, their parents, your senior pastor, your adult volunteers, and so on. As we seek to serve youth workers in the local church, we’ve crafted this edition of YM360 The Magazine to address relationships. In this edition, you’re going to be challenged to think about how you relate to students, their parents, and your leadership. I pray that the content is meaningful to you as you seek to do ministry day in and day out. You’ll also find an overview of some of our ministry resources and events. One of our values is that we empower discipleship. Everything we do, whether it’s a 52-week Bible Study, a fourweek devotion, or GENERATE, is aimed at leading teenagers closer to Christ. We want to partner with you to do this more effectively. If you see something we can help you with, don’t hesitate to call, email, or LiveChat. On behalf of the YM360 Team, thanks for the privilege of serving you. God Bless, Andy Blanks

FREE TIME AFTER SCHOOL A NEW STUDY BY BARNA RESEARCH SHOWS EXACTLY HOW CHILDREN (AGES 4-17) ARE SPENDING THEIR TIME AWAY FROM SCHOOL.

Homework takes the top spot, as you might guess. 65% of children reported spending time doing homework after school. Almost as many, 64%, reported watching television or movies. The third most common activity is interacting with family members (56%). 39% of responders engaged in some kind of informal play or activity. And reading books beyond schoolwork is still a popular activity (32%). Only 23% of those surveyed reported playing organized sports (23%), though this number is probably skewed lower due to younger children being included in the study. According to a new study, teenagers are on a “slow road” to adulthood, delaying jobs, driving, dating, and other steps toward independence. However, the positive side of this is that they are also putting off risky behaviors, from drinking to sex. “The whole developmental pathway has slowed down,” said Jean Twenge, professor of psychology at San Diego State University and the lead author on the study. “Today’s 18-year-olds are living more like 15-year-olds once did.” According to the study, today’s teenagers are far less likely to be engaged in “risky” behavior as teenagers were in the early 90s. Here’s how those numbers compare: • 29% OF 9TH GRADERS HAD SEX, DOWN FROM 38% IN THE EARLY 90s. • 29% OF 8TH GRADERS DRANK ALCOHOL, DOWN FROM 56%. • 32% OF 8TH GRADERS HAD WORKED FOR PAY, DOWN FROM 63%. • 67% DRANK, DOWN FROM 93% IN THE LATE 70s (WHEN THE RESEARCH FIRST BEGAN). • 73% HAD DRIVERS’ LICENSES, DOWN FROM 88%. • 62% HAD HAD SEX, DOWN FROM 68% IN THE EARLY 90s. As for a reason? The internet, smart phones, and the rise of social media probably have had some recent impact. But it’s also at least partially due to more attentive parenting, sometimes derided as “helicopter parenting.” SOURCE:usatoday.com/story/news/2017/09/19/teens-grow-up-slower-study/105758486/

According to a University of Virginia study, children who are popular in school are more likely to become anxious adults. The study found that “strong, intimate friendships during adolescence may help promote long-term mental health, while teens who were broadly sought after by their peers in secondary school may be more prone to social anxiety later in life.” Essentially, students who foster a relatively small number of “high quality” friendships are better suited for maintaining healthy relationships as adults. Students who were considered popular in high school had a higher likelihood of experiencing anxiety as an adult. WE EMPOWER DISCIPLESHIP

ARTICLE

AT YM360, WE WANT TO SEE TEENAGERS KNOW GOD AND MAKE HIM KNOWN. IN A WORD, WE WANT TO SEE THEM BECOME DISCIPLES.

BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS UN-CHURCHED PARENTS

Meet youth ministry’s most used student devotionals. NEW, NEXT & NOW create the Discipleship Bundle. This bundle provides three powerful provides three powerful devotional experiences to help your students grow into authentic disciples of Jesus.

WITH

Over the last several years, study after study has reaffirmed what many of us in youth ministry have observed for decades: parents have a tremendous amount of influence on how their children’s lives look, especially as it pertains to their faith. Chances are, if you’ve been in youth ministry any time at all, you’ve seen this to be true.

BUT HERE’S THE BIG QUESTION: WHAT DO YOU DO WITH STUDENTS WHOSE PARENTS ARE NOT CHRIST-FOLLOWERS? Over the years, I have had more than a few students whose families are completely un-churched. These students’ faith-walk is their own, neither encouraged nor discouraged by their folks. But if parents are the greatest influences teenagers have, what can we do to reach these parents for Jesus? As I have dealt with this issue over the years, there are a few things I have learned.

WE CAN LOVE THEIR CHILD.

The fastest way to a parent’s heart and life is through their teenager. Send notes to the parent bragging on their student (and, by osmosis, on them as a parent). Call to check in on the student after the big game or the big test (and try your hardest to talk to the parent as well.) Loving their teenager will go a long way toward breaking through to them.

WE CAN LOVE THEM.

We make a mistake when we don’t invest intentional time in knowing our students’ parents as deeply as we do their children. Ask about their jobs, their families, and their hobbies. Invite them to grab coffee with you and get to know them better.

LOOK FOR OPEN OPPORTUNITIES.

Opportunities to build relationship with parents, churched or otherwise, are all around us. But we have to be intentional about capitalizing on them. Consider having a team of people who meet parents in the parking lot as they retrieve their children. If you pick up kids for events, go to the door. Say “hi.” Shake their hands. When you make parent meetings mandatory (like for camp, etc.), make sure you carve out time to talk with them while they are on your turf. Introduce them to other parents in the room. Remember their names . . . something beyond “Hey, Cody’s mom.” Show up in a crisis. Give flowers in bereavement and go to the funeral. Text an applicable Scripture. Be open and available, as needed. More than anything, engaging students’ parents intentionally and from a Gospel-centered perspective is the key to influencing them for Christ.

DARREN SUTTON has been in student ministry nearly 30 years, which generally just confirms to him how much he still doesn’t know. Some days he’s the pizza-eating, over-responding, teaching-on-the-fly, desperate-for-volunteers, frustrated-with-co-workers youth leader that we all are. And sometimes he knocks it out of the park! He’s everywhere on social media that you are.

When students give their lives to Christ, the Bible is pretty clear: THEY. ARE. NEW! But what does it mean to be NEW? What does it mean to see God in a NEW way? What does it mean to live out the call to follow Christ? These questions can be daunting ones in the lives of the new or “young” Christ-followers in your youth ministry. NEW: FIRST STEPS FOR CHRISTFOLLOWERS is a powerful experiential journal that will help answer these questions and will help students take the first steps on their new journey with Christ.

What if there was a resource to help students take ownership of their faith? Well, now there is. Introducing NEXT: GROWING A FAITH THAT LASTS. It is a four-week devotional journal that helps challenge and equip your students to take ownership of growing deeper in their faith. NEXT will teach your students why it’s important to own their faith, what their life’s purpose has to do with God’s mission, how to build spiritual habits that last a lifetime, how to use the influence they already have for Christ, and more.

Teenagers have the amazing potential to impact their world for Christ, for Christ, and not just some time way out in the future. But right NOW. Today. Their worlds are rich with opportunities to share the hopeful message of the Gospel and to show people the amazing difference Christ can make in their lives. NOW! IMPACTING YOUR WORLD FOR CHRIST (RIGHT NOW.) will help students understand the PURPOSE God has in store for them, catch God’s VISION for exactly how He wants to use them, and practice real, PRACTICAL ways to impact their world.

If you had to describe Jesus’ ministry in one word, you could come up with a few good descriptors. Empowered would be a good one. Compassionate would be another. But you wouldn’t get too far down the list before you got to a biggie . . . Relational. Jesus’ ministry was uniquely relational. What do I mean by this? Jesus came to tell the world about the Kingdom of God. He came to teach people about Himself, the Way, the only path back to a perfect relationship with the Father. He came to testify that He was the Son of God come to save the world. And He communicated all of this relationally.

JESUS WAS RELATIONAL IN HIS MINISTRY. WE SHOULD BE TOO.

He didn’t have to. Jesus could have done all of this in a detached way. He could have separated this knowledge transfer from life-on-life interaction. But He didn’t. He didn’t separate the ministry He did with His disciples (and others) from the life He lived with them. The two were ingrained and intertwined. Think of all the places in the New Testament where we see this. Here are a few . . .

THE CALLING OF THE DISCIPLES. Jesus didn’t call the disciples to join a program. He didn’t enroll them in a school. He said, “Follow me.” He literally asked them to leave the place they were and begin a relationship with Him. And they did.

HIS HEALING AND HIS MIRACLES. When Jesus healed people or performed miracles, as He did all throughout the Gospels, the primary purpose was to show people He was the Son of God. But the secondary purpose was to dramatically help people. He didn’t have to do this. He could have simply stopped the sun in the sky or performed any other number of miraculous (yet impersonal) things. But Jesus healed people’s afflictions. He calmed storms when they frightened His friends. He fed hungry people. He brought people’s loved ones back from death. This is relational ministry at its finest.

HE RELATIONALLY TAUGHT THE CROWDS THAT FOLLOWED HIM. BY ANDY BLANKS

.COM OR CALL 866.323.6673

Jesus didn’t shun the demanding, needy, imposing crowds

5

that followed Him. He ministered to them. He spent time with them. Often, He addressed them personally. Jesus taught as He went about His day doing life. He didn’t hole up in a synagogue or the Temple and expect His followers to come to Him. He taught in relationship. He used examples that were rooted in people’s lives. He empowered His disciples to do as He did. He modeled what it meant to live the way He taught. There was no cold, one-way knowledge dump. It was relational at its core.

HE CONNECTED DEEPLY WITH PEOPLE. Think about the woman at the well. Think about Martha, Mary, and Lazarus. Think about His disciples, both the 12 and especially His inner three. Jesus connected intimately with the people He ministered to. He knew them. He took time to engage them in a way that met their unique needs.

FROM A BIG PICTURE PERSPECTIVE, THE INCARNATION WAS AS RELATIONAL A THING AS YOU CAN POSSIBLY IMAGINE. God didn’t have to become one of us. He could have made another way. No one forced His hand. And yet, He chose to live amongst us, making Himself available to us. Jesus placed a tremendous amount of importance on ministering to people relationally. I think we have to model this same relational investment. It’s vitally important that everyone on our teams realize that the expectation isn’t to simply fill a task (say, to teach 7th grade guy’s small groups on Sunday mornings) but to fulfill a role. Your role, and the role of your adult volunteers, is to shape lives. It’s to lead teenagers closer to Christ. This really can’t be done without modeling the kind of relational investment Jesus modeled. Challenge your leaders to embrace a deeper level of relational ministry. After all, if it was Jesus’ chosen model, shouldn’t it be ours? ANDY BLANKS is the co-founder and publisher for YM360. WANT TO BECOME A REAL MAN?

ARTICLE

R I C K B U RGE S S

A NDY BL A NK S

YM360 Publisher and Co-Founder Andy Blanks has teamed up with Rick Burgess, best-selling author and cohost of the nationally syndicated morning show Rick and Bubba, to author two exciting books, How To Be A Man and How To Be A Man: Student Edition. These books challenge and equip teenagers and adults alike to pursue a masculinity grounded in the person of Christ. Here, Rick and Andy discuss why they wrote the books. AN D Y: You and I both share a passion for seeing guys

imitate Jesus and live as God desires them to live. This is something the Lord has really laid on our hearts the last few years, isn’t it?

R IC K : Absolutely. As you know, this started in our own church with a movement of men who began to take seriously what it means to live out a Christ-centered masculinity. As I travel and speak across the country, I see this happening all over. Men are waking up. They are realizing that they’re not really pursuing their faith as God has called them to. AN D Y: After years of discipling teenagers and just watch-

ing how they engage with the world around them and observing their relationships with their dads, I approached you last year about co-authoring a book for teenagers

LIVE LIKE JESUS.

How To Be A Man: Pursuing Christ-Centered Masculinity [Student Edition] is a 40-day devotional experience that will challenge teenage guys to a more passionate pursuit of growing in to the man God is calling them to be.

that challenges them to become the young men that God is calling them to be. You pushed back and said that if we were going to do one for teenagers we needed to do one for men too. R I C K : That’s right. I’m blessed to be able to speak and

teach in churches and men’s conferences around the country. What I was seeing in men is the same thing you were seeing in teenagers. A lot of men know they aren’t purposefully pursuing their faith or a Christ-centered masculinity. I’m often asked what I would recommend to help address this. I wanted to be able to put something in their hands that pointed them toward Jesus as the model for what it means to be a man. And so the idea for these two books came together. AN D Y: I love that we decided to do one for adults and

one for teenagers. I get pretty excited about the idea that a dad can walk through this with his son, or a youth worker can walk through this with a group of guys.

R I C K : Oh yeah. That’s the part that I love. Obviously, a teenager can go through the guy’s book by himself. And a man can go through the adult version by himself. But the real transformation happens when you watch a dad lead a son or an adult leader lead a small group through this content.

.COM OR CALL 866.323.6673

Culture sends so many confusing messages about masculinity, and when you add faith to the mix, it gets even more complicated. What does it mean to be a man, anyway? And more importantly, what does it mean to be a teenage guy who seeks to become the young man God wants him to be? Using eight core characteristics, this devotional experience will challenge teenage guys to exemplify these in their own lives as they passionately pursue a Christ-centered manhood.

• Identity • Integrity

• Purpose • Surrender

HOW TO BE A MAN [Student Edition] features: 40-daily devotional experiences. "Processing the Pursuit" section at the end of each day to challenge teenagers to apply daily learnings. In-depth study of eight core characteristics of Jesus teenagers can seek to exemplify in their own lives.

• Passion • Commitment

10 ARTICLE Ideally, we should believe that God has called our pastor to lead the church and that if God called our pastor to serve there, God meant for us to also serve and support our pastor. Our pastors will never be perfect. (Our support of them doesn’t turn a blind eye to immoral or unethical behavior.) But we don’t need our pastors to be perfect in order to believe that they are called by God to lead the church you’re serving.

BE YOUR PASTOR’S BIGGEST FAN. Along with being a great supporter of my pastor, I want to be his biggest fan. Being a youth pastor is hard work and emotionally draining, no doubt. But I believe that being a pastor of an entire congregation is even harder work and more emotionally draining. Satan loves to see leaders fall and would love to see our pastors totally discouraged by the weight of leading the Church. Our pastors need us to cheer them on.

SENIOR

PASTOR

NEVER EVER GOSSIP ABOUT THEM. It’s likely that some of you are working in situations where you’re frustrated with your pastor. That frustration may be warranted, but please hear me when I tell you that talking about your pastor behind their back is sin, and your relationship with your pastor will not be all it could be as long as you continue. God’s Word is clear about gossip, and it’s clear about what to do when you have a problem with someone. If you have a problem, you need to talk to them about it.

“SO GOOD, THEY’RE REALLY GOOD!” -LITERALLY EVERYBODY

PRAY FOR THEM. I’ve been blessed over the years to be in a lot of meetings with lots of youth pastors from all walks of life. When I’m around other youth pastors, it seems that inevitably someone is going to make a pastor joke, or someone is going to start sharing about how badly they get along their pastor. I’ve always struggled with this. It has always felt to me that as youth pastors, we’re getting something wrong when it comes to having a great relationship with our pastors. I’m not suggesting that problems between a youth minister and their pastor are always the youth minister’s fault. In an ideal situation, your pastor will be your biggest supporter, and for some of you this is the case. Others of you have strained relationships with your pastor. Although I’m a bit of a hobbyist magician, I don’t have any magic that will automatically fix your problem. I have, however, been blessed with some great mentors who’ve taught me a lot about working with my pastor. I’d like for you to consider some of the things I’ve learned from others about how to establish a great relationship with your pastor.

BELIEVE THAT YOU’RE CALLED TO SUPPORT YOUR PASTOR AND THAT YOUR PASTOR IS CALLED TO LEAD THE CHURCH.

Praying for our pastor should be the first thing we do in order to build a great relationship. I don’t mean this in a legalistic way, but I really believe you should be praying for them daily. Here’s the thing: How are you going to gossip about your pastor or let someone else bad-mouth them or root against them if you’re praying for them daily? If you and I are praying for our pastors daily, our hearts will point in a loving and supportive direction for them. CHRIS TRENT

BIBLE STUDY

WHY RELATIONSHIPS ARE VITAL TO NEW CHRIST-FOLLOWERS We should all have new Christ-followers in our midst. Some of us will have more than others. But by the very nature of our role as youth ministers, we should be seeing teenagers come to faith in Christ or getting serious about their faith for the first time. I think these new Christ-followers have at least four basic needs, and the concept of relationship flows through each of these. To define these needs, we can look to the first picture of the first century Church we get in Acts 2:36-47. NEED 1: NEW CHRIST-FOLLOWERS NEED TO KNOW GOD MORE AND BETTER. “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching . . .” (Acts 2:42) New believers need to know God more and better. They need a grasp of foundational theological principles like salvation, forgiveness, and grace. They need an understanding of the Gospel. They need to know what it means to pursue Christ likeness. But helping students grow in their faith starts with some pretty foundational truths, and their lives will be richer for it if they learn these truths at the beginning of their walk with the Lord. These truths are best taught in relationship with a more mature Christ-follower. NEED 2: NEW CHRIST-FOLLOWERS NEED TO BE WITH OTHER CHRIST-FOLLOWERS DOING WHAT CHRIST-FOLLOWERS DO. “They devoted themselves to . . . fellowship...” (Acts 2:42) “All who believed were together . . . ” Acts 2:44) “And day by day, attending the temple together . . .” (Acts 2:46) One of the needs we have to make sure we’re providing for our new and young believers is community. Meeting them

with other like-minded students in relationship. The new believer who joins a group of his or her peers who are living lives as Christ-followers finds living, breathing pictures of this new life to which he or she has been called.. The change seems possible. This new life of devotion seems doable. It is, in essence, the group teaching the new believer “how” to believe. NEED 3: NEW CHRIST-FOLLOWERS NEED TO BE SHOWN THE PATHWAYS THAT LEAD TO GOD. I’m talking about spiritual disciplines, spiritual habits, or the practices that lead us to God. Acts 2:42 says the new believers in Jerusalem were devoted to prayer. There’s a solid spiritual habit. Verse 46 says they met every single day. That’s a powerful commitment to worship, another spiritual discipline. Spiritual habits such as prayer, Bible reading, worship, fasting, service, and so on are the pathways through which we engage with God. These must be taught and modeled (there’s the concept of relationship cropping up again) to new Christ-followers. These habits will inform their faith for a lifetime. NEED 4: NEW CHRIST-FOLLOWERS NEED RELATIONSHIPS WITH INDIVIDUALS WHO CAN WALK THROUGH THE BEGINNING OF THEIR FAITH LIFE WITH THEM. This is different than community. This is Christian friendship. Where do we see this in Acts 2? Check it out: verse 46 says, “ . . . breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts.” New believers need friends to walk with them as they put down the roots of their faith. These are four needs I see in Scripture, all of them informed and empowered by Christ-centered relationship. BY ANDY BLANKS

Instead of your adults leading your students in Bible Study, recreation group building activities, and worship pre-gatherings, one of our Village Guides (a GENERATE staff member) will do so.

EXPLORE allows you to decide how you want to spend your day from 10:00 am through dinner. If you want to be off campus enjoying what the area has to offer, go for it!

"If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God."

GUIDE

C O L O S S IANS 3:1

At YM360, we seek to empower discipleship through providing excellent Bible Study curriculum. This summer at GENERATE, the Village Bible Study is titled The Uprising: Compelled to Worship, Live, Love and Tell. Each day, your students will be challenged to rise up in their walk with Christ.

DAY 1 BECAUSE THERE IS NO ONE LIKE OUR GOD, WE RAISE UP IN WORSHIP. “Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe.” - Hebrews 12:28

DAY 2

One of the best ways to learn to be a disciple-maker is to learn alongside other disciple-makers, and LEAD TEAM perfectly displays that. Your group (10th grade students and older) will participate in staff devotions, meetings, development, worship, and areas of concentration such as production, recreation, and support roles. (Max of 20 people per week.)

NEW FOR 2018:

CONSIDER THIS

To say “Youth ministry can be challenging” is an understatement. Few callings have as many variables. Discipling teenagers is a tough calling. But what about the dynamics with the staff and leadership of your church? What about the challenges of engaging with your students’ parents? And let’s not get started on the way that ministry impacts your family. Youth ministry is not for the faint of heart. Especially if you’re just getting started which is why Consider This is such an important book.

We know you desire to lead students closer to God. Many ask, “What’s the most effective way to do this?” We believe it is by teaching students the Word of God. The Bible is God’s main way of making Himself and His ways known, and your students need sound Bible teaching now more than ever. This resource offers you seven ultra-practical and deeply meaningful “practices” you can use to help teach the Bible in a transformative and dynamic way. This is a perfect book to place in the hands of your leaders.

DISCIPLE: THE ORDINARY PERSON’S GUIDE TO DISCIPLING TEENAGERS

This is your youth ministry evangelism and discipleship strategy for a post-Christian culture. If your ministry desires to reach teenagers growing up in the post-Christian culture we find ourselves in, you and your entire team will benefit greatly from this resource. Benjamin Kerns uses a thought-provoking twist on a beloved parable as the framework for a rich examination of the cultural landscape, helping you reach lost students and know how to begin discipling them.

Written by one of the leading voices in youth ministry, Dr. Allen Jackson, Disciple is a practical, down-to-earth guide for leading teenagers to pursue Christ. No matter if you’re a veteran or a newbie, Disciple will help challenge and equip you and your team to get serious about disciple-making.

MEET ANNA ARCHER

When I’m not serving awesome youth workers, I spend my time with my husband, Jared, trying to figure out this whole “parenting” thing with our new daughter, Millie. I’m a lover of literature and weirdly super invested in the Olympics. Go Team USA! We attend church in Birmingham where my husband is the “cool” small group leader and I’m the ever-stressed nursery worker.

One of my favorite YM360 values is: We Crush Hassles. I work with an incredible team, and customer care is something we don’t play around with. Big or small, let us take what’s hassling you and hopefully make life just a little bit easier. Seriously, we’ve been known to literally run down the UPS truck in order to make sure event books arrive on time. We’re in the trenches with you every day. You’re not alone! Reach out. Let us crush your hassles while you prepare yourself to ask your pastor for more budget money so you can buy more pizza: the much more pressing issue on your plate.
