What They Said I’m grateful that the team at ym360 has written a book that helps teachers lead students to encounter God through becoming better teachers of the Bible. It’s solid and practical. – Doug Fields When I heard of this book, I automatically assumed it would go on the ‘must read list’ for youth ministers whom I have the privilege to train at the New Orleans Seminary. I was right. It needs to go on yours, as well. – Dr. Allen Jackson

Training: Tools, Tips, & Encouragement At ym360, we take our call to serve youth workers pretty seriously. We’re passionate about partnering with youth workers to lead students closer to Christ. This partnership is most commonly facilitated through our training initiatives. It’s a true blessing to have the chance to provide training to youth workers. We do this in a few different ways. Training occurs most frequently through the youthministry360 Blog. Every day—yes, every single day--we post a new article on the Blog. These articles fall into different categories, but they all have one thing in common: they are practical, relevant articles designed to help you grow in the craft of doing youth ministry. The best thing is that we have over 50 different contributors to our blog, so there’s a ton of different insight and perspectives offered.
We also offer training through live, interactive workshops we’re fortunate enough to get to offer around the country. These face-to-face, workshops provide exciting moments where youth workers can learn from each other, becoming more effective at discipling the students in their ministries. On the next few pages, you’ll find some samples from some of the best content on the ym360 Blog. If the Blog isn’t something you’re tracking with on a regular basis, you’re missing out. If you like what you see, stop by the blog sometime. There’s plenty more where this came from! God Bless, Andy Blanks co-founder, Publisher andy@youthministry360.com
4 Traits Of A Healthy Volunteer Team How do you know if your volunteer team is healthy? Here’s a few thoughts on how you can tell if you’ve got a healthy volunteer team, and if not, some suggestions for how to fix it. 1. Your volunteers should genuinely like each other. This is part of what it means to be a team. In our ministry, our volunteers represent a diverse group of individuals. The college students don’t invite our grandparent leaders over for movies in the dorm, but when we get them together, they all get along. At the very least, your volunteers need to know each other’s names. It’s even better if they are comfortable enough to share prayer requests with one another.
By Aaron Helman
2. Your volunteers should be able to operate without you. If your volunteers have clear roles and responsibilities, they won’t need you there to manage their actions and movements. You’ll love the simple way to gauge this: just take a Sunday off. Give your leaders a heads up and some brief directions. Tell them to arrive early to meet without you. Enjoy your time off, and afterward, check to see how things went. To read the rest of the article, go to: https://youthministry360.com/4-traits

What Bad Habits Do You Need To Kick? By Christopher Wesley
Staying on top of our bad habits can be challenging. One of the best things we can do is name them. (It’s easier to fight when you know who your opponent is!) So what are your bad habits? Here’s a list of the ones that have given me trouble: Not Writing It Down Whether it’s a phone message, email, or action step, I tell myself, “it’s in my head and therefore I’ll remember it.” I’m great at lying to myself. If I don’t write it down I’ll forget it. Writing it down also guarantees that we’ll respond in a timely manner. Winging My Hours I have my weekly schedule posted in two places in my office. I need to track my hours because if I don’t, I’m going to feel overworked and overwhelmed. Tracking hours is about tracking how efficient you are with the time you have. If you don’t track your hours, you risk under producing while wasting a bunch of time. Skipping The Breaks We need to make sure we’re taking a constructive break each day. The best time for me to do that is at lunch. Leave the laptop and phone and getaway for a breather. We can’t go all out, all day, every day, and expect to stay healthy. Don’t be afraid to craft some group games or competitions to use in your lesson!
20 Tips To Liven Up Your Bible Study Teaching By Andy Blanks Let’s face it: At some point in our time as Bible Study teachers we all get a little, how to say this nicely . . . predictable. We get in the habit of teaching the same basic structure of a lesson over and over again. So, I thought I’d pass along a list of ideas and tips to help you spruce up your Bible Study lesson. 1. Adjust your room set-up— Switching up your set-up is a SUPER easy way to liven things up a bit. Who doesn’t appreciate a change in scenery? 2. Use an object lesson— This is one of my go-to’s. If I’m looking at a lesson plan that needs a little life breathed into it, I find an object or an image I can use as a metaphor to drive home the theme I’m teaching.
3. Creative participation— Let students create something. Tie in an activity with your lesson where they are taking pictures with their phones, or writing words on a giant sheet of paper. Paint is magical, for some reason. Have students use paint to draw or write. 4. Competition rules— Don’t be afraid to craft some group games or competitions to use in your lesson. These are a great way to spruce up a lesson. To read the rest of the article, go to: https://youthministry360.com/20-tips

When Is A Youth Minister Too Old To Be Effective? When is a youth worker too old to be effective? I’ve noticed something that happens to us youth workers around our mid-30’s, or so. We find ourselves unable to naturally relate to teenagers. Most of us have reached a point where we don’t automatically pick up on their references like we did in our 20’s. They mention a fad or a movie and we realize we have no idea what they’re talking about. This happens enough, and it begins to bother us. We begin to think that means we’re too old. We hear a clock ticking inside of us. We say something like, “I’ve lost my relevance.” There are other signs, as well . . . The needle on our fun-meter isn’t as often moved by the games and the recreation. We think, “I need to move on to more We begin to think that adult things.” We see means we’re too old. our peers “advancing” We hear a clock ticking to become Minister to Adults or Teaching inside of us. We say Pastors. We say to oursomething like, “I’ve selves, “I need to move lost my relevance.” on to real ministry.” We see our friends leaving the ministry. We ask ourselves, “Is it time for me to quit playing around and get a real job?” The problem with this scenario is that it comes at the precise time when we’re positioned to do some of the most meaningful ministry of our lives (up to this point). At the exact time when these feelings are banging around in our heads, many of us are just arriving at a point where we can really pour spiritual wisdom into the lives of those we lead. When I was leading students at age 25, if I was being transparent, I led as a peer as much as anything else. The 35 year old me and the 25 year old me have very little in common,
spiritually speaking. And it’s not just spiritual experience. I’ve lived life! In 10 years I’ve had three children, changed careers, lost a sibling and three grandparents, gone off to war, traveled and ministered around the world, and so on. I bet your story is similar. Aren’t we in a better position to lead students in their faith based on our faith-shaping experiences? I’m a more effective discipler in large part because of the wisdom that God has worked in my life through these years. The same can be said about your ability to lead others. The same can be said about your ability to listen to others. The same can be said about your patience, and your ability to work well with people who may be difficult to work with. One of the biggest tragedies of people leaving youth ministry at this critical stage in their lives is the wealth of practical knowledge that leaves with them. It seems each week I encounter a youth worker who is just getting started. Some are just kids, some are moms and dads. I hear them asking me and others for help. Help with strategy. Help with methodology. Help with their heart and vision. When youth ministers who have been in the game six, or eight, or ten years moves on, they take with them a treasure-trove of practical experience. As a middle-aged youth worker, you’re in the best position to be a mentor to younger youth workers. And when you leave because it’s maybe not as “fun” anymore, or because you “feel” out of touch (when the truth is that you simply have to try a little harder), or because you’re envious of your friend who has “moved up” in the ministry world . . . when you walk away because of these things and NOT because of God’s leading, you rob youth and youth workers from the spiritual and practical wisdom that God has birthed in you. When is a youth worker too old to be effective? Never.

Before I get going, I feel the need to make two statements out of the gate: • Statement 1: I love athletics. I played multiple sports in high school. I played intramural sports in college. I workout daily and compete in triathlons and adventure/endurance races. I’m not anti-athletics. I enjoy watching sports. They are a big part of my life and my family’s life. • Statement 2: My children are involved in athletics. And while they are still young, we are headed down a path that could lead to some of the very issues I am about to raise in this post. My oldest daughter plays softball. My middle daughter is involved in gymnastics. If both continue on the path they’re on, we could potentially enter into a situation where their time commitment to their respective sports will dominate our “free” time. Having made both of these caveats, I’m ready to ask the following questions to you:
The first question: Are sports hurting the programcentric youth ministry model that many if not most youth ministries operate on? A few weeks ago, we had a youth minister drop by our office. We took a few moments to see how things were going in his ministry. He’s a competent, passionate youth worker, the kind of guy you’d love to have on your team. But I couldn’t help but hear a l ittle frustration in his voice as he talked about the main thing he’s struggling with. He’s having a really hard time competing with sports for his teenager’s time. He has close to 50 kids on roll in his youth ministry. He’s struggling to get between 20 and 30 to Wednesday nights and the main culprit is “practice.” All sorts of practice: football, basketball, cheerleading, etc. You name it. And it’s not just Wednesdays. Sunday numbers are down, too. AAU basketball, travel cheerleading, and travel baseball and softball take up a lot of his students’ weekends.
This youth minister didn’t mention this for his own church, but I know that my church’s Summer Camp numbers will be impacted by the fact that the high schools in our community have moved to required practice all summer long for football. And by “all summer long,” I mean four days a week for all but two weeks of the summer. Additionally, I know several students who didn’t attend our Winter Retreat a few weeks ago because of athletic commitments. Are you experiencing the same thing? Would you say your students’ involvement in sports is negatively impacting their participation in your youth ministry events? The second question: Is being hyper-committed to athletics hurting your teenagers’ individual spiritual growth? To read the rest of this article, go to:
