It’s been a very good year for performances - Columbia Daily Tribune: Columnists

It’s been a very good year for performances Posted: Monday, June 6, 2011 2:05 pm

Part I of the three-part 2011 “Best things I saw or heard in Central Missouri — from Jan. 1 until Memorial Day.” It has been a very good year. I hardly know where to start. In no particular order: The music of the Noble Piano Trio from Yale University at the Plowman Chamber Music Competition — which did not win. We need new judges. Of all the great nights at the University of Missouri Concert Series — “The Color Purple.” The music version was unforgettable. Maria Duhova Trevor’s harp prelude at the Larry Morehouse celebration of life. Willie Cogshell and a great all-black cast in “Fences,” directed by Clyde Ruffin for the MU Department of Theatre. The breakup scene in “Sexual Perversity in Chicago” at the Capital City Dinner Theatre in Jefferson City. Branden Bise and Margaret Graham were unforgettable, too. Mary Kettlewell’s “Spanish Rose” dance in Hickman High School’s “Bye, Bye, Birdie,” An evening with the History and Theatrical Trial Society in “The Trial of Dr. Frankenstein.” An excellent cast headed by Mackenzie Meyer in “You Can’t Take it With You,” maybe the best non-musical Ol’ Clark has seen at Rock Bridge High School. The Ray Vega Latin Jazz rendition of “Tribute to King Oliver,” part of the “We Always Swing” Jazz Series. Britton Stamps in his first stage role in the touching PACE production of “The Yellow Boat,” a story of AIDS in children. Adam McCall as Jesus and Russ Boyer as King Herod in Columbia Entertainment Company’s “Jesus Christ, Superstar” and Eric Seeley as Brother Boy in “Sordid Lives.” Stephanie Berg’s new clarinet composition, “Study in Red,” with the Ninth Street Philharmonic. Craig Datz on the Missouri United Methodist Church organ with the music from Anton Dvorak’s “New World” and Cesar Franck’s “Symphony in D Minor.” The “Vilja Song” from the Showme Opera’s production of “The Merry Widow.” Jake Clayton’s show-stopping “Orange Blossom Special” at Mexico, Mo.’s Presser Hall with his old buddy, guitarist Bill Potts. Any show with Sutu Forte. In particular, her May afternoon on the “Blind” Boone Piano featuring new compositions by local artists. Newcomer Cheryl Piha in MU Theatre’s “Pride and Prejudice.” We will meet her again in MU’s summer rep. Also, Marsha Miller was a certified bitch as Lady Catherine. Addison Myers and Aaron Krawitz in the Theatre NXS show “Halpern and Johnson.” Garrison Keillor on the Jesse Hall stage or anytime, anywhere. http://www.columbiatribune.com/opinion/columnists/it-s-been-a-very-good-year-for-performances/article_3364c965-8e7e-593c-8be3-5fb85169c09b.html?mode=…

Y. Alvin Wong Cellist Alvin Wong has appeared in concerts across five continents. He has performed in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Seoul Arts Center, and Hong Kong Cultural Center; and in music festivals such as Aspen, Orford, Fontfroide, Sion, Casals, and Great Mountains. Recent highlights include appearances in the iPalpiti Festival of International Soloists, Festival de Carvalho in Brazil, tour with Indiana University New Music Ensemble to the Midwest and East Coast, and chamber music concert series in Hong Kong. He has also given concertlectures in Korea and the States. A native of Hong Kong, Alvin started playing the piano when he was 3 but did not study the cello until he was 14. After winning some local competitions, he continued his cello studies at the Eastman School of Music while pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Biology. He received his Masters from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where he was also an Associate Instructor in Music Theory. He received the Artist Diploma from Yale, and is currently enrolled in their doctoral program. His major teachers are Aldo Parisot and Janos Starker. Alvin is currently on faculty of Connecticut College and Neighborhood Music School, and is the principal cellist of Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra. He previously served as principal cellist for the Missouri Symphony Orchestra. He is passionate about bringing live classical music to a broader audience, and continues to regularly perform solo and chamber recitals in hospitals, retirement homes, and public schools. He has been a member of the New Haven Outreach Performers since 2007.
