Music Louise Geraghty ’09 Music, Art History Q: Why did you major in music? A: I have been involved in music for my entire life, be it through playing the violin or singing. I decided that I definitely wanted to major in music after I took a couple of music classes, private lessons and participated in ensembles at the College. Q: What were your professors like? A: I really appreciated the faculty’s willingness to take student considerations into account regarding the department’s direction. Also, faculty members were always available to answer my questions and give good advice regarding course selection, my honors thesis or future plans. Q: Were you able to study abroad? A: I studied abroad in Dakar, Senegal. In Dakar I was able to conduct an independent research project on Senegalese hip-hop. The topic is a great passion of mine, and a great way to apply skills that I had learned in music theory classes to an original research project. Q: Where have you interned? A: I interned at a free concert series this past summer in Chicago, where I created printed programs and compiled educational material for audiences. Q: Where are you now working? A: I work for a nonprofit called Artist Corps New Orleans, part of the pilot program of the Music National Service Initiative. We place our Artist Corps New Orleans Fellows in elementary schools without music programs to teach music and carry out music-related community service.
Overview Whether your passion in life is music, or you want to gain a deeper appreciation for it, the music department is here for you. The music department offers a curriculum that reflects the best features of a music conservatory without sacrificing the traditional liberal arts experience. Our students are challenged by our faculty in the studio and the classroom to become first-rate performers, composers and scholars. Students majoring in music work closely with their professors and tailor the major to fit their needs and interests. You will have the opportunity to major in either music or music and technology. We also offer four concentrations in performance, theory, history and composition to supplement the major coursework. You might even consider participating in our interdisciplinary certificate program in arts and technology.
Performance and Private Study Opportunities Public student performances are a priority in this department. You may perform a solo work during one of the many student recitals we have each semester, or you may join one of our performing ensembles, including the concert band, jazz ensemble, orchestra, percussion ensemble and chamber choir. If musical theater is your thing, you may audition for one of our annual shows, produced in collaboration with the theater department. We are pleased to be able to offer free music lessons to qualified students, which are made possible by the Jack Niblack ’98 Music Lessons Fund.
Community Outreach Are you someone who is interested in reaching out to the local community to share your appreciation for music? If so, you may participate in our servicelearning program by teaching music lessons in New London’s public schools. You may participate on a volunteer basis or earn credit by enrolling in our Service-Learning Practicum in Music course.
Guest Lecturers The department encourages its students to attend master classes and lectures, which are regularly offered by internationally renowned performers, composers and scholars. Through the College’s Composers Forum, students, faculty and guest composers meet to present and discuss new compositions.
Facilities Cummings Arts Center, our beautiful home on campus, includes technologycapable classrooms, the Greer Music Library and plenty of studios and practice rooms. You will also have access to the Cummings Electronic and Digital Sound Studio, which includes a recording studio, a control room with connectivity to our two major recital halls and a production-quality electronic music studio.
Beyond Connecticut College A major in music does not just enhance your appreciation and understanding of the arts. The skills you develop as a music major prepare you for graduate school or for careers in performance, composition, teaching and the music industry.

Dear Alvin, Greetings from Hong Kong! I am very much looking forward to your concert with Amy. I am writing to ask if you would be interested to give a cello masterclass and/or coach our cellists/strings. Currently, we have a cello ensemble and a few good cellists which would greatly benefit from your teaching, should you have the time. Many thanks, and I look forward to hearing from you soon. best, David ---

Hi Dr. Chung, Thank you for your message. I too look forward to playing at BU again! I would love to give a class for cellists, if they play want to play standard cello repertoire for me, or a coaching session for the cello ensemble, or both. My schedule is quite flexible when in Hong Kong so I can come in on multiple days. If you would let me know in advance what pieces they will play/are working on, that would help me prepare better for the class as well. Thank you for the opportunity! Alvin --Y.
