REGISTRATION INFORMATION Some classes are offered by the instructor and you will register with and pay them directly. Please read the description for details. Make sure we have your current email address and phone number on file in case we need to contact you about directions, cancellations, etc. You can register three ways:

REGISTRATION DEADLINES

Please register at least 3 business days before class begins. If you would like to join class on the day it begins and it is still open, please call to register.

CLASS CANCELLATIONS

Occasionally, we must cancel classes due to insufficient enrollment, weather, etc. When a class is cancelled you will have the option of receiving a full refund or a credit.

CLASS WITHDRAWALS

Refund requests must be made at least 3 business days prior to the first class meeting to ensure a full refund or credit. Withdrawals after that time will receive credit or a refund minus a $5 fee. Withdrawals after a class begins are non–refundable.

ON DEMAND CLASSES Sometimes we offer a class you want to take at a time or day that doesn’t work for your schedule. The Y now offers an alternative with On Demand classes. You tell us the class you’d like to take from classes listed with the On Demand and we’ll work with you and your potential classmates to find the perfect time to hold the class. All you have to do is:

1. Give us a call at 540–961–9622 or go online to www.vtymca.org; 2. Register for the class; 3. When the minimum number of students register, we’ll set times/dates for the class; 4. Come to class and enjoy! If for any reason the class doesn’t reach the minimum number of students, you’ll get a full refund. Have a group of friends, family, or coworkers who want to take one of our classes at a different time than we offer it and it’s not On Demand? Call us and we’ll do our best to arrange it!

Arts and Crafts Crochet for Beginners Instructor: Lindsey Gilmer Course Description: In this class you will learn the basic crochet stitches and techniques as well as how to read a crochet pattern. You will learn how to make a scarf, coaster, and a mug cozy. This class will provide you with the skills you need to tackle all the wonderful crochet projects you encounter. Students need to bring size H crochet hook and two skeins of worsted weight yarn. Students should bring H size crochet hook and two skeins of worsted weight. Drawing Instructor: Jordan Lively Course Description: This course is open to any drawing medium- pencil, charcoal, color pencils, markers, and pastels. Course will begin with experimentation of preferred medium and a crash course in art elements- specifically value, line, and texture. Color theory won’t be taught, but instructor will advise on color choice. The class then progresses to sill life, portraits, and free choice drawing for the remainder of the course. This class is meant to push student’s skill level, creativity, and drawing accuracy. Student’s best 3  |  Open U Classes

Scrapbooking for Kids Instructor: Casey Long Course Description: Scrapbooking is a great way for children to share memories for years to come. It is a great way to learn more about your family and friends through moments and experiences. This class can open kids’ minds to creativity and a type of art that isn’t always covered in the classroom. Students should bring pictures to use in their scrapbook. $20 of the class fee goes to supplies for the students. Ashtanga Yoga Instructor: Karen Cairns Course Description: Ashtanga Yoga is a set series of poses taught in the tradition established by Sri k. Pattabhi Jois and continued by his grandson, R. Sharath Jois. Ashtanga is both aerobic and weight bearing and therefore has many benefits physically and emotionally. For all classes, please dress comfortably; bring a mat and a small towel to use as a “prop.” Karen studied with Shri K. Pattabhi Jois from 2002-08 and continues to study every year in Mysore, India with R. Sharath Jois. She was authorized Level 1 by the Shri K. Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute in 2010 and is registered with Yoga Alliance as E-RYT 500. Class fee is $10 per class to instructor. Continuing Tai chi Instructor: Jim Lawrence Course Description: Tai Chi is a Chinese movement system for enhancing Health, balance and inner strength. Slow and gentle movements are combined with focused attention to promote overall well being. This class is for students who have completed the “24-Style” form and wish to further develop their skills through continued practice and instructions. Instructor Jim Lawrence is a building contractor who has been teaching Tai Chi for 19 years and continues the 27-year tradition of offering Tai Chi at the Y. Hoop Dance Basics Instructor: Kristin Marlowe Course Description: This class will allow you to strengthen your body and focus on the meditative art of hoop dance. You will learn to express your inner self and become one with the hoop. Hoop Dance Basics is a low impact, high energy, and core busting way to achieve physical fitness! Slow Yoga Instructor: Lisa McCrickard Course Description: Come experience a series of gentle, slow-moving movements and postures designed to increase flexibility and calm the mind. Qigong Yoga Instructor: Robin Murphy Course Description: Qigong practice typically involves moving meditation, coordinating slow flowing movement, deep rhythmic breathing, and calm meditative state of mind. Qigong is now practiced throughout China and worldwide for recreation, exercise and relaxation, preventive medicine and self-healing, complementary and alternative medicine, meditation and self-cultivation, and training for martial arts. Zumba Fitness with Natalia Instructor: Natalia Pizarro Course Description: Zumba, Perfect For Everybody and every body! Each Zumba class is designed to bring people together to sweat it on. We take the “work” out of workout, by mixing low-intensity and high-intensity moves for an interval-style, calorie-burning dance fitness party. Once the Latin and World rhythms take over, you’ll see why Zumba Fitness classes are often called exercise in disguise. Super effective? Check. Super fun? Check and check. Partner Massage Instructor: Victoria Stone Course Description: For couples, family members, and friends who want to learn to give (and receive!)some basic Swedish Massage techniques. Class will include very little lecture, some discussion, demonstrations and practicing on each other. Each student should bring a set of twin sheets and 2 pillowcases. Introduction to Animal Tracking Instructor: Rob Speiden Course Description: Discover the many mysteries of the creatures that inhabit nature. This class will increase your awareness and ability to find and interpret tracks, scats and other disturbances left behind by mammals, birds and insects. This course and the fieldtrip will help you to better understand and appreciate the environment by learning how to correctly identify animal families by their signs and prints. Rob Speiden, founder and lead instructor of the Natural Awareness Tracking School, will guide this learning experience. Bring snacks or lunch to eat in the field. This workshop will introduce you to skills practiced and employed by search and rescue and other organizations to find lost or missing persons. But beware, this class will not support the misconceptions portrayed by the entertainment media, rather, it will show you the reality of how tracking works. Students will work on finding tracks and learn what may occur when you or a loved one becomes lost. Rob Speiden is the founder and lead instructor of the Natural Awareness Tracking School and teaches human tracking skills to search and rescue and law enforcement agencies around the world. Map and Compass Instructor: Rob Speiden Course Description: Learn how to navigate in the woods! In a world of technology, basic tools can still be used to prevent getting lost in the wilderness. We will cover map reading, compass use, route planning, land navigation, declination and put these skills to use outside. A classroom session will be followed by a 2-hour moderate hike, so be prepared for the weather, through the woods on trails and a great opportunity to become comfortable with your compass and a USGS topographical map. Rob Speiden teaches navigation skills to search and rescue personnel throughout the USA. Bring a lunch, note pad, pencil and compass if you have one. Dates: 3-May Day and Time: Sunday 8am - 2pm

Really Natural Foods Instructor: Rob Speiden Course Description: The world of tasty, edible plants includes more than what you can find in the grocery store - some of them are growing right outside your door! If you’re interested in issues of health and sustainability this is a class is for you. There will be an inside class portion and a short outside walk so be prepared for the weather. Rob Speiden will guide this exploration of the wild edible and medicinal plants you can pick to eat, or use to treat the symptoms of common illnesses like colds, sore throats or bee stings. Poisonous look-alike plants will also be identified and discussed. Rob has spent decades enjoying the outdoors and its bounty; he teaches survival and tracking skills to Search and Rescue volunteers and the public nationwide. Optional supplies: notebook and camera. Workshop: Exploring Handbuilding with clay “Creating with Slabs” Instructor: Michael LaRoche Course Description: Exploring handbuilding is an intermediate level class working with slabs of clay and some wheel thrown pieces in combination to make unique shapes.
