CLASS CANCELLATIONS
Occasionally, we must cancel classes due to insufficient enrollment, weather, etc. When a class is cancelled you will have the option of receiving a full refund or a credit.
CLASS WITHDRAWALS
Refund requests must be made at least 3 business days prior to the first class meeting to ensure a full refund or credit. Withdrawals after that time will receive credit or a refund minus a $5 fee. Withdrawals after class begins are non–refundable.

Sign Language for Babies and Toddlers
Youth French
This class is and opportunity for babies, toddlers and parents to learn how to communicate in American Sign Language. Often at a young age, communication can be hard for children. A basic knowledge of sing language can improve a child’s mood, IQ, fine motor skills and development in tactile, kinesthetic, and visual modalities. Come enjoy this opportunity to connect and bond with your children while learning a new language at the same time! Classes will emphasize visual and hands–on learning techniques. Some healthy snacks, art projects and music will be provided during specific classes.
Beginning courses introduce vocabulary and essential dialog through the use of role play, songs, games, gestures and stories. Our continuing courses expand knowledge and use of the target language, increasing comfort with the language and functional proficiency. Other classes offered on demand.

Arts & Humanities MUSIC Harmonica For Absolute Beginners Learn how to play campfire favorites (“straight harp”) as well as beginning blues. Bring your own harmonica in the key of C (Lee Oskar recommended but Hohner acceptable). Ages 12 and up. Eight week program.

Guitar For Absolute Beginners Students will acquire a basic foundation in guitar including tuning, playing chords, reading tabulature, flat–picking and playing simple folk and blues songs. Yoga
Tai Chi for Beginners
In this class, students will practice and play with yoga postures, breathing practices and meditation techniques to help begin to bring the body, mind and spirit into balance. Participants will be guided in explorations that will encourage the individual to become more aware of how the body, breath and mind are connected. Please bring a yoga mat.
Tai Chi is a Chinese movement system for enhancing Health, balance and inner strength. Slow and gentle movements are combined with focused attention to promote overall well being. This class will concentrate on Tai Chi principles and instruction in the “24–Style” Yang short form.
Instructor John Pollard is an engineer who has taught Tai Chi for 17 years and continues the 25–year tradition of offering Tai Chi at the Y. Pattabhi Jois and continued by his grandson, R. Sharath Jois. Ashtanga is both aerobic and weight–bearing and therefore has many benefits physically and emotionally. For all classes, please dress comfortably, bring a mat and a small towel to use as a “prop.”
Karen studied with Shri K. Pattabhi Jois from 2002– 2008 and continues to study every year in Mysore, India with R. Sharath Jois. She was Authorized Level 1 by the Shri K. Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute in 2010 and is registered with Yoga Alliance as E–RYT 500.

Gentle Yoga This class offers a gentle approach that makes it accessible to those who are living with injuries and physical challenges. Transitions to and from the floor are minimized to help protect joints. Even though the movements may be physically gentle, participants will be encouraged to explore the poses deeply respecting and honoring any injuries or limitations while cultivating an improved sense of body awareness. In this class, movements will be in a chair, standing and lying down on the floor. Please bring a yoga mat.

These classes serve to provide an environment and opportunity for all to enjoy the energizing, enriching and empowering benefits of dance and music in a welcoming community setting.

GROUP INTERESTS Life–long Learning DANCE Yoga and Belly Dance Students will begin with a yoga practice that encourages one to develop fluid strength, freedom of movement, and most of all, an increased awareness of how her body moves and breathes. Students will then explore fundamental belly dance moves and will be dancing with them in combinations by the end of each class. Modern Dance
Digital Photography Basics
Explore the fundamentals of modern dance technique! We’ll start with gentle warm up activities, gradually increasing in rigor and intensity. The class will ultimately progress towards fun, full–bodied movement phrases. Creative expression and improvisation will be introduced and encouraged. Session one will be open to all skill levels. Session two will build on the first session.
Instructor Kirk Keith offers this class for those who have more camera than time on their hands. Learn what all those fancy settings are for, how to improve your photos and the advantages/disadvantages of film vs. digital photography. The emphasis here is on having more fun with your camera purchase and greater satisfaction with your prints. Bring your camera and manual to class.

PHOTOGRAPHY Beginning Photography Have a great camera but don’t know how to make it work for you? This course will teach you how to use your camera’s capabilities to capture better images. Topics will include manual exposure settings including the balance of ISO, shutter speed, and aperture, finding good light, and basic composition guidelines. There will be hands– on work in class as well as homework assignments each week to practice what you’ve learned and opportunities to provide and receive constructive criticism. You’ll need access to a camera with at least some manual controls (M, Tv, and Av settings). Bring your camera and manual to class.

We’ll do hands–on Photoshop activities and class discussions. FINE ARTS AND CRAFTS Fused Glass 101: An Introduction to Glass Fusing through Art Tiles and Pendants This class will cover the basics of glass cutting, edge trimming for safety, glass compatibility, glass assembly and development of aesthetically pleasing fused (kiln formed) glass pieces. The student should expect to leave the class with several pendants and two tiles for display. Special glass for fusing will be used. All supplies and equipment will be provided.

Fused Glass 201: Art Panels and Slumping of Dishes and Bowls This class will expand on fused glass basics from Fused Glass 101. Assembly and “framing” of art panels will be covered as well as weaving of glass. Next, the basics of slumping (bending glass over a stainless steel or into ceramic mold in the kiln) will be covered. The student should expect to leave the class with several art panels and several dishes. Class fee: $120, supplies included Dates: 11/24–12/8 Time: Sundays 1–5 p.m. Location: Y Center Glassblowing Weekend Workshop Get ready for the experience of a lifetime as you learn the ancient art of glassblowing. You will learn about shop safety, proper tool use, the materials for making glass into objects of arresting beauty in a one–on–one method that is hands–on. The class is paced to the student and the group so the forms we make will depend on the group and how quickly each is able to move through each form. Students in the past have made flowers, ornaments, sun–catchers, yard ornaments, and vessels such as bowls and tumblers.
Instructor Parker Stafford holds a MFA from University of Southern Illinois at Carbondale in sculpture and foundry. His award winning designs have been exhibited widely throughout the United States and abroad. SEWING You Can Sew! Always wanted to learn to sew? Learn all the basics while completing a simple clothing item. Instructor Terry Ellen Carter will help you with pattern selection and provide step–by–step guidance throughout your project. After this class, you can let your skills take you in any direction that interests you...fashion, quilting, costumes, home decor, hemming and alterations, and crafting. The possibilities are endless when YOU CAN SEW! Get acquainted with your own sewing machine or use one of ours. The second class will be a shopping trip to purchase supplies. WRITING Writing for the Joy of It
Beginning Conversational Spanish
Have you always wanted to write but don’t know how to start and/or sustain your practice? This workshop is an all day writing adventure that provides a series of structured exercises that honor the writing process, support discovery of your writer’s voice, and exploration and development of your stories. Instructors Jenny Zia and Lesley Howard ground their facilitation in their own combined six–plus decades of daily writing practice, inspired by the philosophies of Julia Cameron, Natalie Goldberg, Anne Lamott and Priscilla Long, amongst others. Supplies needed: pen, notebook to write in and a brown bag lunch or money for lunch in a downtown restaurant of your choice. Muse–nourishing snacks and beverages provided.
This course provides the fundamentals of the Spanish language and teaches grammar and conversation. It enables beginners and advanced beginner learners to develop Spanish language skills naturally. Required Supplies: Spanish textbook: “Easy Spanish Step–By–Step” by Barbara Bregstein.
Jenny Zia, MA, MSW, has shared writing prompts and journal practices with a variety of individuals and groups. Lesley Howard is a local freelance writer, blogger, and one of the founding members of the New River Valley Voices juried reading program. Both are members of a long–standing writing group. WORLD LANGUAGES Turkish Language and Culture This course involves the basics of the language taught in a way that the students will have a substantial overview of the structure of the language supplemented with exercises on vocabulary usage for daily conversational needs. Cultural aspects will be incorporated as needed in the learning of the language.
Instructor Pinar Gurdal has been teaching several years both for the Open University and the English Language Institute. GARDENING & OUTDOORS Seasonal Arrangements Create beautiful seasonal arrangements with plant material/flowers from your own yard and garden. You’ll be given information ahead of class to learn when/how to cut flowers and other plant material. Participants will bring flowers/materials and a favorite container. Extra vases and plant materials will be available at class. Class will be held at the instructor’s garden just 3 miles from downtown Blacksburg. Directions will be emailed to you after registration. A garden tour will be included in the evening.

Instructor Rebekah Paulson launched “Rebekah’s Country Garden” in 2007, selling sustainable and organically grown flowers from her garden. Rebekah is a floral designer creating unique floral arrangements for weddings and special events and is a gardening consultant. Tabor Road, Blacksburg Fall Vegetable Gardening and Season Extension Learn when and how to grow veggies in the fall and winter with row covers, grow tunnels and cold frames made from locally available sources. Find out how to prepare your crops for the weather systems coming your way. Much of this information also works for an early jump on the spring season as well. Bring a notebook and pen to class and containers for take–home transplants.

HOME AND ENVIRONMENT Kitchen and Bath Remodeling From the Inside Out Have you thought about remodeling, but been overwhelmed by all the choices? Blue Ridge Home Improvement and Ferguson Enterprises have teamed up to offer this course to help you navigate a kitchen or bath remodel with success. The course will address three areas: cabinetry – types, construction methods, drawers, and finishes; plumbing fixtures – types, quality, and finishes; and countertop materials – pros and cons. Before you begin your remodel, take this course so you will understand the process from “the inside out” and be able to make the best decisions for your lifestyle. POTTERY AT THE Y CENTER POTTERY STUDIO Thrown Pottery This course teaches the fundamentals of how to create clay works using the pottery wheel. Areas covered will include centering, throwing, trimming, and glazing. Students will leave this course with hands trained to turn clay into mugs, bowls, and lids. There are basic pottery tools available for you to use during class and you may purchase additional clay as needed. This class is suitable for beginning as well as continuing students who still need to practice their skills. Pottery: Creating Functional Forms In this 4–part class, students will create 3–6 hand–built designs of their choice including slab–built platter, plate, bowl, hand–built mug, casserole dish, or vase. We will be using techniques to incorporate various textures and decorative elements including handles and feet. Students will glaze pieces during the class and will be able to pick them up in time for gift– giving before the holidays! Course fee includes all supplies, glazes and firing of work. Instructor Allison Keys has been a Pottery Apprentice at Berea College, and at The Potter’s Wheel in Cookeville, Tn. Allison now enjoys making functional stoneware in her home pottery studio. She has taught Pottery classes for the YMCA Open University since 2005. Class fee: $80 Dates: 9/30–10/21 Time: Mondays 7–9 p.m. Location: Y Center Pottery Studio Jars and Teapots: Intermediate Wheel Thrown Pottery This class is geared to students who have had at least one class or experience with throwing but are looking to polish their skills and advance their technique. With a small class size and one–on–one instructor help, you will work with the instructor to help develop skills and ideas that go beyond beginning wheel throwing. Advanced pottery forms such as teapots and jars are among many topics that will be discussed and demonstrated. Class is limited to 7 students. In this demonstration Michael will illustrate throwing of multiple forms, combining these shapes, and keep throwing to the finish of a piece. In this demonstration, Michael will explore the tea pot and its components – the Lid and the Spout. These two parts of a tea pot can make a tea pot work really well keeping it from just being a pretty shelf decoration. The tea pot’s function will be tested and stressed in this class the most. Environmental Education HOME AND ENVIRONMENT Practical Photovoltaics This overview will provide an introduction to photovoltaic solar electric systems including grid–tie, grid–interactive, and off–grid. Discussion will include panels, mounting methods, inverters, maintenance, and evaluation factors when choosing components and a contractor to design and install your system. This class is offered in conjunction with Sustainability Week Events. Free; pre– registration is requested.
