OUR MISSION The YMCA of San Diego County is dedicated to improving the quality of human life and to helping all people realize their fullest potential as children of God through the development of the spirit, mind and body.
WELCOME Welcome to the 36th Annual YMCA Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Human Dignity Award Breakfast. 2020 was a year we never imagined as we celebrated at the Town & Country a year ago. Everyone has had to learn new ways of communicating, schooling, working, and staying in touch with friends and family during months of quarantine. Thank God we have survived thus far. Covid-19 took over the world and our lives early in 2020. As of today, over 22,533,000 Americans have been infected, and over 375,000 Americans have lost their fight with the virus. Our lives are forever changed in more ways than we can number. We’ve lost loved ones and a whole way of life. While we were home working, studying, and watching TV, we were horrified to witness the unjust and unprovoked murders of African American men and women. We watched as thousands, including some of us, took to the streets all over the nation, under the banner of Black Lives Matter, protesting these murders. The true story of discrimination and the unfair treatment people of color was brought into our homes and lives for everyone to see. The outrage is real. People who couldn’t deny discrimination any more, came out to march together against the travesties. Closer to this Dr. King event, we witnessed the attempted overthrow of the Capitol building in Washington on January 8, 2021, endangering the lives members of Congress and the Senate, and the Capitol police sworn to protect them. We are still reeling from that as I write. The nation is nowhere near being at peace. A new administration will be sworn in next week, but will we ever get back to “normal?” What’s even “normal” now?? Every year I’ve said “the struggle continues,” but 2020 brought this struggle home as never before. We’ve struggled to learn to live together as family 24/7, to get comfortable wearing masks, social distancing and washing our hands, and struggled to learn how to show more respect for others when they tell their stories of discrimination, injustice and inequality.
Dr. King said, “We must live together as brothers, or perish together as fools.”
The time for unity, equality, fairness, truth and justice, and respect for others, is now!! Despite the challenges and struggles of the last year, the wonder of technology and “re-imagining” (and many prayers and meetings) have enabled us to virtually participate in our “traditional” celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Special thanks to Ray McKewon for his generous leadership and education. I pray for healing in 2021 - both from Covid 19, and from hate, lies and injustice - and that we will grow from our inability to live as brothers. Let’s hope for a better story to tell in January 2022. Sincerely yours,
Dee Sanford, Event Chairperson 1999 - 2021 2020 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Human Dignity Award Honoree 30 Year Board member, Jackie Robinson Family YMCA

PLEDGE & SONG
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic, for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. LIFT EVERY VOICE AND SING:
“A group of young men in Jacksonville, Florida arranged to celebrate Lincoln’s Birthday in 1900. My brother, J. Rosamond Johnson and I decided to write a song to be sung at the exercises. I wrote the words and he wrote the music. Our New York Publisher, Edward B. Marks, made mimeographed copies for us, and the song was taught to and sung by a chorus of five-hundred school children. Shortly afterwards, my brother and I moved away from Jacksonville to New York, and the song passed out of our minds. But the school children of Jacksonville kept singing it; they went off to other schools and sang it; they became teachers and taught it to other children. Within twenty years it was being heard all over the South and in some other parts of the Country. Today the song, popularly known as the Negro National Hymn, is quite generally used. The lines of this song repay me in an elation, almost exquisite anguish, whenever I hear them sung by Negro Children.” Lift every voice and sing Till earth and heaven ring, Ring with the harmonies of Liberty; Let our rejoicing rise High as the listening skies, Let it resound loud as the rolling sea. Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us, Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us. Facing the rising sun of our new day begun, Let us march on till victory is won.
Stony the road we trod, Bitter the chastening rod, Felt in the days when hope unborn had died; Yet with a steady beat, Have not our weary feet Come to the place for which our fathers sighed? We have come over a way that with tears has been watered, We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered, Out from the gloomy past, Till now we stand at last Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.
God of our weary years, May we forever stand. God of our silent tears, True to our God, Thou who hast brought us True to our native land. thus far on the way; Thou who hast by Thy might Led us into the light, Keep us forever in the path, we pray. Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee, Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee; Shadowed beneath Thy hand,

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
BARON HERDELIN-DOHERTY
President & CEO, YMCA of San Diego County
Dear Friends of the YMCA, Welcome to the 36th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Human Dignity Award celebration. We are blessed that you’ve joined us for what continuously proves to be an inspiring community event celebrating Dr. King’s life and legacy – even if we have to do so virtually this year! This celebration is more important now than ever - and while we aren’t able to gather together in that large hall in Mission Valley feeling the energy of the room, the amazing sounds of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Choir San Diego, and the fellowship and celebration of Dr. King’s legacy, we’re pleased we get to have even more people experience this event. If it’s your first or your 36th – welcome. This unprecedented year called for a strong award winner and an inspirational keynote speaker. Our event committee did a terrific job choosing Dr. Wilma Wooten as this year’s Human Dignity Award winner, and Assemblymember Dr. Shirley Nash Weber as your keynote. Both are tremendous leaders and we’re all in for a treat. Our YMCA’s focus to work on racial justice both internally and externally for our San Diego community continues to ramp up as we develop our strategic process on how to address systemic racism. This is not a sprint - it’s a marathon, and I believe that Dr. King would approve of how our YMCA is focused on eradicating racial injustice. At the Y, we are inclusive and make ALL feel welcome and valued. Kindness, equality and community are so important, and we are forever grateful to Dr. King for leading the way All Families Count! Bringing People Closer,

HONORING COMMUNITY SERVICE 2021 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Human Dignity Award Recipient
DR. WILMA WOOTEN We are proud to announce this year’s Human Dignity Award winner, Dr. Wilma Wooten, San Diego County’s public health officer. Dr. Wooten, an ardent supporter of public health, will join our honorees of the past who have encompassed outstanding qualities of volunteerism, philanthropy and activism in our community since the first Human Dignity Award Breakfast in 1986. Dr. Wooten has been with the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency since 2001, initially as deputy health officer and, since 2007, as the public health officer. She received both professional degrees from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, followed by the completion of residency training at the Georgetown/Providence Hospital Family Practice Residency Program in Washington, DC. Trained in family medicine, public health and preventive medicine, she has oversight for almost 500 employees and a budget of over $100M, serving a county of 3.1 million residents. Throughout her life, Dr. Wooten has broken barriers and served as a role model for young people, especially African American girls, who wish to pursue a career in medicine and science. During the COVID-19 crisis, Dr. Wooten has exemplified what it means to be a person of courage and moral strength by providing clear, science-based directives to County leaders that prioritize the health of San Diegans through the pandemic. She has stood firm in advocating for best practices in wearing masks, washing hands, staying six feet apart and avoiding being indoors with non-household members. Wooten was named 2020 San Diegan of the Year by the San Diego Union Tribune. We are thrilled to honor her with the 2021 Human Dignity Award.

Dr. King was in Memphis to help lead sanitation workers in a protest against low wages and intolerable working conditions. Dr. King’s funeral services were held April 9, 1968, at Ebenezer Baptist Church and on the campus of Morehouse College. The President of the United States proclaimed a day of mourning with flags flown at half-staff. The area where Dr. King is entombed is located on Freedom Plaza and is surrounded by the Freedom Hall Complex of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Historical Site. The site’s 23-acre area is listed as a National Historical Landmark and a National Historic Site.
IN HIS 1957 ESSAY, “FACING THE CHALLENGE OF A NEW AGE,” Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. noted, “We have before us the glorious opportunity to inject a new dimension of love into the veins of our civilization. And the end is reconciliation; the end is redemption; the end is the creation of the beloved community.”

Sixty one years I’ve been in baseball. I’ve played and worked with some of the all-time legends, like Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Ted Williams and Dave Winfield. Right near the top of that list was Jackie Robinson, who not only broke records, he shattered the barriers. He not only made a big difference in the game, he forever changed baseball. Jackie led, so that players like Satchel Paige, Willie Mays and Hank Aaron could follow. But Jackie’s contribution shouldn’t be measured on his batting average. It’s much bigger than that. Jackie wanted to make a difference in the lives of at-risk kids—with mentoring programs and scholarships for deserving youth. Join me as we fight that good fight - to give a better future to our kids. When it comes to our kids, we all have to pitch in.
MARSHALL FAULK
I am all about giving kids a chance to beat the odds and leave their own legacy. The Jackie Robinson YMCA has been doing this every day for the past seventy years. I believe that the kids that are successful and the ones that make it they leave the legacy by them achieving what they achieve in life and we will find out five, ten, fifteen years down the line when these kids start giving back to their communities because they remember how they got to where they are right now. Imagine what a new Y in its current location will do to help kids join teams, not gangs.
TONY GWYNN
I would have never have received an opportunity in baseball if Jackie Robinson hadn’t played well and handled himself in the proper manner. Without Jackie, there would not be me. I always try to take his way and apply it to what I do. I think about Jackie all the time and ask myself, “What would he have done?” He proves the value in thinking things through. You can’t just react. You must look at both sides of any situation and appreciate the other person’s perspective. My wife Alicia and I have been longtime supporters of the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA. Jackie said, “A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives.” At this Y, they are making an impact where it is needed the most.
DICK VITALE
Every day my wife and I feel blessed to wake up in the life we have, and it has nothing to do with fame or fortune. It has to do with the togetherness we’ve built with family, friends and everybody we meet. I feel that we have a W in the game of life. Success can happen for anybody with any background if you plan, pursue, and persevere just like the Safe At Home Capital Campaign. The Jackie Robinson YMCA is a great team that is earning a W in the game of life, and by being Awesome, Baby, with a Capital A!
BILL WALTON
Now it’s time for me to help other people with their dreams. Giving back is an important part of that. Our responsibility to the next generation our duty to leave this world a better place for our children and theirs. I care about the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA. I played there as a kid and my kids can say the same. I care about San Diego. That’s why I’m involved. You can’t live a perfect day without doing something for someone who will never be able to repay you. Don’t measure yourself by what you have accomplished, but by what you should have accomplished with your ability.
DAVE WINFIELD
I came to San Diego and the Padres in 1973, and early on I sought out the organization that best put forth efforts that supported youth and the community. I immediately found that to be the Jackie Robinson YMCA. Since then they continuously show dedication, heart and excellence in reaching and impacting all they serve. I’ve worked with and supported their efforts personally through my foundation and through the Padres organization for nearly 40 years. That alone could say it all, but certainly the Jackie Robinson YMCA is a great team to be a part of.
KELLEN WINSLOW
There is no greater honor than to be of service to others. For years the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA has provided educational and recreational services to a unique and diverse community in San Diego. I have witnessed the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA grow into an integral and vital part of the community. The Safe at Home Capital Campaign is the next step in providing even greater facilities and services to families of Southeast San Diego. I am honored to serve as a member of the Safe at Home Capital Campaign Hall of Fame Cabinet. Please join me and my fellow Members of the Hall of Fame Cabinet.

OUR STORY
THIS IS THE JACKIE ROBINSON FAMILY YMCA... The Southeastern YMCA opened its doors in 1943 and moved it headquarters to 45th Street (now YMCA Way) and Imperial Avenue in 1961. Fifteen acres of land were donated by Greenwood Mortuary while the first structure was hand-built by a dedicated and visionary group of community leaders. In 1973 the branch was renamed the Jackie Robinson Memorial YMCA. Now, as the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA, every day we extend our reach to people of all ages with a variety of needs and interests. We serve an ethnically diverse community of over a quarter of a million people. Our staff and volunteers are committed to making a real difference in the lives of those we serve. For many children and families in Southeastern San Diego, the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA is a safe haven. We offer sports, fitness, teen and family programming year-round, as well as after-school activities and day camps during summer and school holidays. Through donors and grants, we are able to provide program subsidies to more than 85% of our program participants. It is our goal that no one will be turned away due to their inability to pay full price for these programs. Getting involved in the YMCA’s programs not only encourages a healthy lifestyle, but it may also help motivate a child to break the cycle of violence in our community. To help kids develop strong values in a complex and changing world, our Y is constantly challenged to do anything possible to increase the stability and influence of the family. We do everything possible to make sure all kids attend, behave, and succeed in school. In 2017 we completed the reconstructon of our new facility, which not only houses everything you’d expect from a YMCA, but more- it encompasses the hopes and dreams of a young and troubled neighborhood. At the Y, our character values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility are at the heart of all that we do. But our Y also strives to reflect the values, qualities, and traits of Jackie Robinson. We honor him and feel it is our responsibility to contoinue his legacy. He broke through many barriers while demonstrating courage, persistence, intelligence, integrity, teamwork, citizenship, determination, commitment and excellence.

OUR SPONSORS Congressman Scott Peters I'm proud to support the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA and the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Human Dignity Award Breakfast Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. inspired so many, and his teachings are as important today as they were decades ago. My father is a retired Lutheran minister who was part of a group of interfaith clergy that fought housing discrimination in Detroit in the 1960s. The values he taught me drive my commitment to civil rights, and shape my work in Congress. I'm honored to help continue the mission toward furthering equality and justice. Paid for by Scott Peters for Congress
