CHANGING LIVES

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT Lynn YMCA

“Food is something people out there need to survive, and now we know how to plant things, so we can feed ourselves.” Uzziah Curry, a 5th Grader at Washington STEM Elementary recognizes the importance of food and being self-sufficient. She is one of many youth that attend the gardening program at the Lynn YMCA. Uzziah enjoys the programming because she likes to plant the seeds, water and care for them and be able to eat the food she’s grown. She’s proud of what she’s learned, and has already started teaching what she knows to her 5 month old sister, stating “it’s never too early, she needs to eat her vegetables!” Rosiley Encarnacion, also a 5th grader at Washington STEM Elementary, remembers the first time she visited the garden – “the first time I went to the garden, I wanted to try something new. Before, I didn’t like planting or eating vegetables. But I tried planting and liked it. In the garden Abby asked us to try the vegetables, and I tried them and now I eat them all the time.” She recalls the first time she ate a fresh vegetable out in the garden as “life-changing.” She recalled how she used to throw tantrums at home when

her mom tried to serve vegetables. In the garden there were a lot of foods she’d never tried before, and once she tried them, she realized she really did like them. Now she gets upset if they aren’t fruits or vegetables at dinner. Nathan Rodriguez is a 2nd grader at Cobbett Elementary. He is a very curious young man and loves the garden because it gives him an opportunity to “explore new plants and food we’ve never tried, and learn words we have never heard.” He enjoys the full experience that is offered to him – he loves learning about the plumbing that brings water to the plants, how to use the new words he’s learned, and how to dry out some of the foods he’s grown, in order to save the seeds and replant them. Gardening is a therapeutic practice. Having the opportunity to sink your hands into the soil and see and help things grow is a powerful experience for anyone. For youth, it is extra powerful. After having a bad day at school, the garden is the perfect place to go. It is a reminder that with care and attention, things will be prosperous.

HEALTHY LIVING Torigian Family YMCA

It was a year ago in the YMCA of Metro North annual report that we introduced our donors to Cesar Mancebo. Ten years ago, Cesar fell in his home resulting in a fracture to his C5 and C6 vertebrae. Doctors told him that he would be spending the rest of his life in a wheelchair, dependent on others to complete the most basic of tasks. Being a father and a husband, Cesar committed himself to rigorous workouts at rehab and at the South Shore YMCA where the “Partnership Program” was offered. This program was designed for adults that have a physical disability relating to spinal cord injury, disease or stroke. Fast forward to 2018, Cesar has found a home at the Torigian Family YMCA’s “Partnership Program”. This program was modeled and adapted around the South Shore YMCA program. Using the adaptive fitness equipment with his family and YMCA staff, Cesar spends four hours a week gaining strength, improving balance and working extremely hard to gain his independence. In fact, last year, we shared with our donors that Cesar, for the first time since the accident was able to straighten his legs, thanks to the Nu-Step machine and the stretching mats at the YMCA. Cesar’s wife credits a strong faith for the progress in his recovery.

This year, as part of the YMCA of Metro North’s commitment to Healthy Living and making sure every member achieves his/her potential, it is exciting to share that Cesar is now walking. Despite the diagnosis of his health care professionals, Cesar can now walk about 25 feet. Cesar’s ultimate goal is to walk unaided and continue to grow stronger for himself and especially for his family. The Partnership Program at the Torigian YMCA was originally funded by Peter and Susan Harmeling. Their vision was to eliminate barriers including geographic location, costs and accessibility for all people struggling with a disability relating to disease, accidents or medical condition. To date, about 100 members have participated in this YMCA program with continued growth anticipated.

We want our participants to feel comfortable to work out and move just like everyone else in the gym - Chris Tognazzi Healthy Living Coordinator Torigian Family YMCA

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Lynn Vocational Technical School

From the words of Katelyn McCarthy, teacher at COACh (Creating Opportunities for Autistic Children) at Lynn Vocational Technical School, Lynn MA Going to the YMCA has meant a lot to our staff and students, it’s something they look forward to every week. Most of our school day is very routine and structured, and students are used to being told what to do and when to do it. The time at the YMCA allows for them to choose their own activities and do what interests them. Some students want to use the weights and build muscle in the equipment room. Many students like to play basketball in small groups in the gymnasium. Some enjoy playing catch or playing with the hula hoops, and some just like walking laps and chatting with their friends. This freedom is very important in developing their independence, which is the main goal of all three classes (Fresh Start 18-22, Life Skills 18-22 and COACh 18-22). Some students go after school to play basketball and it’s the highlight of their week. They run in the next day and tell me about what they did at the YMCA. Previously, these students would be sitting in their house in front of the television for the entire night or be wandering the streets alone. The YMCA has given the kids a healthy, productive place to spend their free time. Students who never seemed interested in learning about and improving their health have

suddenly become interested in learning how to use hand weights and the various weight machines, and many have come to enjoy activities like that even more than playing on iPads or watching movies! This year, the students travel out into the community once a week where the goal is to learn street safety and how to act appropriately in different locations. With those trips and our weekly trip to the YMCA, many students have been losing weight. Not only are the students bettering their health, but the staff is enjoying going to the gym with the kids and a few staff members have been inspired to get their own memberships and go in their free time with their families. It has been an educational experience for students and staff alike. Parents have been very happy with our trips to the YMCA and most say they would bring their kids there after school or on weekends if they had memberships themselves, as most of our students require supervision. Many parents have noticed their children look healthier and have lost weight. These kids are a fantastic group that had been falling through the cracks in their community before the YMCA stepped in.
