YMCA of Metro North 2018 Highlights: YOUTH DEVELOPMENT Y Academy launched in 2018! This STEAM based program serves infants through middle schoolers at five of our locations. Almost 1,400 children gained ageappropriate academic and social skills through handson learning experiences in our early learning programs, setting them up for success in kindergarten. Over 1,100 children participated in our STEAM focused curriculum during out-of-school time at Y Academy. Confidence is gained and sportsmanship is taught as part of our YMN swim teams as well as our YMCA of Metro North Twisters gymnastics team! Over 600 youth improved their fitness levels, made new friends, learned important skills, all while having fun while competing on behalf of the YMCA! 75 kids spent their afternoons learning the basics of running and improving their skills in our Youth Running Clubs. Many of these kids participated in their first 5k races during our YMCA of Metro North Road Race Series, boosting their confidence while instilling the importance of exercise and healthy habits at a young age.
HEALTHY LIVING Our 2018 Road Race Series was our most successful yet, with more than 1,600 runners crossing the finish lines during our series of four 5k road races hosted across our service area. The Torigian Family YMCA hosted the 3rd annual Half Marathon to support LiveSTRONG at the Y. New in 2018 was a partner relay option for participants who wanted to run 6.5 miles each. Registration increased 76% and in addition to raising funds for our LiveSTRONG program, the Y raised tremendous awareness of our program and the impact it has on our communities. The Melrose Y partnered with Melrose-Wakefield Hospital to provide a Cardiac Rehab Maintenance program for their current Cardiac Rehab program participants. This program provided over 60 people with an opportunity to work out with peers and continue to maintain a healthy lifestyle, which will help improve their heart health and reduce their risk of future problems. More than 140 participants utilized our Partnership, LiveSTRONG at the Y, and Enhance Fitness evidence-based programs in 2018. The Torigian Y’s Partnership program serves individuals that need specialized, adaptive exercise equipment and/or one-on-one assistance. Our LiveSTRONG program helps cancer survivors reclaim their health and well-being after treatment. Enhance is geared towards older adults with chronic conditions such as arthritis, and is designed to help participants gain more strength and independence.
Nurture, improve, and give For a Better Us. SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY The Lynn YMCA held a groundbreaking ceremony for the New Lynn YMCA project in October! Governor Charlie Baker and Lynn Mayor Tom McGee were in attendance, as well as many other notable state and local leaders. With an anticpated opening date of summer 2020, this new 70,000 square foot Y campus will service as an epicenter of activity in Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility! The YMCA of Metro North provided employment for over 700 people in 2018! Many of these team members live in the communities served by the association and utilize the services the Y has to offer. Nearly 130 teens and young adults worked their first job at the Y. “Where in the World” Gala was hosted by the YMCA of Metro North on Saturday, September 22 with over 250 local Y supporters dining on international cuisine, bidding on live and silent auction items and celebrating the grand prize winner of “dinner for 2 anywhere in the world”! Raising over $130,000 to ensure nobody is turned away from the Y for inability to pay, this event will be back in 2019!
The YMCA of Metro North awarded six Y Champion Scholarships to graduating high school seniors in 2018. Pictured is scholarship recipient Taima Walker and scholarship committee member and board of directors member Dr. Lisa McBride.
Change comes about when we all work together.

CHANGING LIVES
YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
When 8 year old Jayliana Beauchamp crossed the finish line after completing her first 5k and went back to run with the very last runner, you never would have known that just months prior she was homeless. Jayliana, her 3 siblings, and her mother became displaced in the Spring of 2018 when a devastating flood swept through the City of Lynn and destroyed the apartment where they lived. The family lived for months with just a plastic bag of belongings that they took with them to friends couches or different motels each night. And that is where the Lynn YMCA came in. Jessica Rosario-Rios, 28, found herself running out of childcare options for her 4 children, ages 6-12, as she went to work each day as a Home Health Aide. Since she does work hard long hours to support her family, setting a positive example, she does not qualify for any government assistance for after school childcare. Without the help of a voucher she was faced with leaving her job to take care of her children, until she heard about the Lynn YMCA. When she first went to the Lynn YMCA she was shocked to hear
that at the Y “no one is turned away for inability to pay.” Her four children were given a Y scholarship and enrolled in the Y Academy program free of charge. Jayliana and her siblings quickly took to the program at the Y and came to think of the staff there as a second family. Not only was this a safe place to go after school; it was a healthy snack, a hot meal, and a place to try out new activities: like running! The Track Club quickly became Jayliana’s favorite activity and her siblings joined in as well. The whole family got to participate in the Lynn YMCA’s Stride Along the Tide 5k in Nahant. Jessica beamed as she stood by the finish line, a self-proclaimed ‘super fan’ for her children. She was especially proud when her youngest, Jayliana, helped the very last runner cross the finish line because of the teamwork she learned in the YMCA Youth Center. “The Y has been my lifeline. They really helped me through some of the darkest days I have experienced and I am so grateful from the bottom of my heart,” Jessica explained about the impact of the Y on her life. “I am committed to educating my kids, keeping them safe, making sure that they are respectful and responsible and I know thanks to the Y, I will be able to do all that.”
HEALTHY LIVING
Omar is a middle schooler with cerebral palsy who started working out with personal trainer, Josh Brown, at the Melrose Family YMCA in the Spring of 2018. Initially, personal training came as a recommendation from Omar’s physical therapist to improve his overall strength and health before he started middle school, but over time it grew into much more. The pair inspire each other during each session and have cultivated a friendship built on mutual respect for the other’s hard work and dedication to strength training. Their shared goal is that one day Omar will be strong enough to walk. Omar’s Mom, Hanan Atiyat explains what the Y has meant to her son, “The YMCA has a great impact on my son’s life. We are very thankful to Josh who is tremendous at helping and supporting Omar physically, mentally and even financially.” When there was a question about how Omar’s family could continue to afford the training sessions with Josh, he took it upon himself to speak with Melrose YMCA Executive Director, Katelyn Papadopoulos, about how the Y could help. The Y stepped up to help immediately and offered Omar a scholarship to help pay for his personal training sessions.
At the Y, wellness reaches beyond just physical health. “Josh helped Omar develop his self esteem as his training helped Omar improve his overall physical strength,” explained Hanan, “Josh also helped Omar to stay focused on his goal.” Before Omar met Josh he was feeling down and he was a little depressed and didn’t want to attend his physical therapy sessions. The way Josh viewed physical training with Omar changed the way Omar felt about strength training. “Every time Omar attends a training session with Josh, he becomes more thrilled to do more.” The impact the Y has had on Omar’s life is sure to stay with him not only during middle school and high school but through the rest of his life. Omar’s goal is that someday he will stand up and walk independently, and thanks to Josh and the Y, he is one step closer.
The YMCA has a great impact on my son’s life. We are very thankful to Josh who is tremendous at helping and suppporting Omar physically, mentally, and even financially. - Hanan Atiyat
