LETTER

PRESIDENT AND CEO

JACK GOOD

Corporate Board President

DEAR FRIENDS, “Teenagers today…” Most people finishing that thought might not do so in a positive fashion. We sometimes hear words like: lazy, disrespectful, self-centered, disinterested, rude, etc. These sentiments are really no different than generations past have felt about their own teens. Leading an organization that works with thousands of teens annually, the above description is far from what we feel is the truth. These days, there seems to be a great deal that can make us feel negative and disenchanted. From the economy to the environment, from the lack of opportunity to the grid-locked political climate, there is so much that can frustrate us. From an organization with firsthand knowledge, please know that our teens – our next generation – are not something that should fall into this category.

MISSION The YMCA of the North Shore is committed to education and the values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. Our Y provides all children, adults and families, regardless of income, with opportunities to develop a healthy spirit, mind and body.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE STATEMENT In 2011, the YMCA of the North Shore provided more than $2.2 million in financial assistance for 9,500 children and adults who were unable to pay for Y memberships and programs. Financial aid was made available thanks to the generous contributions of our community, businesses and our United Ways.

Through a myriad of Y youth development programs which include: teen centers, Y Leaders, service learning, adventure programs, sports leagues, swim teams, gymnastics teams, camp counselors-in-training, life guards, etc… we encounter and employ more teens than any other organization on the North Shore. Given this status, we can proudly report that we find our teens to be motivated, engaged, technology savvy, positive, and energized individuals, full of the possibilities of tomorrow and ready to help others in any way they can. We at the Y think highly of our teens. Not only do we spend a great deal of our time and resources serving them, but in exchange, they spend a large amount of their energy helping us serve those less fortunate among us.

JACK MEANY Chief Executive Officer

From serving hot meals at area churches, to raising needed funds and supplies for area food banks, to rebuilding homes in New Orleans - our teens are making their mark and making a difference every day. Inspired by the guidance of our capable Y staff and coupled with the resources provided by our generous donors, our teens are learning and reinforcing the habits that can surely make for a different world. Our Y takes great pride in mentoring our next generation. It is one of the most significant things we accomplish. We find this next generation very worthy of this investment. Their positive attitude and genuine compassion is inspiring. The energy and commitment our teens display is a road map for us all. So please take heart. The next generation is developing quite nicely. Thank you to all staff, board, volunteers, and donors for your part in the development process. We, as a society, will have great challenges as we face the future, but we will also have a capable, caring, and optimistic generation to lead us.

A

common complaint from teens is, “there’s nothing to do.” It is usually followed by, “there isn’t any place to hang out.” This perceived boredom and lack of space to call their own often lead teens to hang out in places where they shouldn’t.

TO CALL

THEIR OWN

Teens take advantage of special Teen Nights

The Teen Center at the Lynch/van Otterloo YMCA, and its dedicated staff, make sure these excuses no longer hold true for teens from Marblehead and Swampscott. The Y stays open late specifically for middle school students on Fridays and high school students on Saturdays. This gives them the chance to take advantage of all the healthy and fun options the Y offers in an atmosphere that caters just to their age group. These weekend drop-in hours allow teens to swim in the pool, play sports in the gym, climb the rock wall, bounce around the gymnastics center, as well as play video games and listen to music in the Teen Center. Hunter McCoole, a senior at Marblehead High, says, “my whole family is involved in the Y, but it is nice to have a time when I can enjoy it with my friends. We have the place to ourselves and we can be just with other kids from the high school.” This drop-in time has no set schedule and no need to sign up; a true “open door” policy that ensures teens always have a safe and secure option on a Friday or Saturday night. Plus, it lets them explore all the Y has to offer at their own pace and comfort level. “I come to the Y every day, but Teen Night gives me the opportunity to enjoy areas that I never go into when it is full of little kids and adults,” says Peyton Weston, a Marblehead High senior. “You end up meeting people from other towns and hanging out with them. I started coming as just a way to get exercise, but now I come to meet up with people and be social.” Special events, programs and clubs continue to draw in teens. From open mic nights and community service clubs to ski and skate trips, more and more teens are finding their place at the Lynch/van Otterloo Y. Whether they come to get healthy in our fitness center, release some steam on the basketball court or make new friends, these teens appreciate having a fun space to call their own. And they can never again use the excuse, “there’s nothing to do!”

“DURING TEEN NIGHTS, IT IS NICE TO HAVE THE PLACE TO OURSELVES AND WE CAN ENJOY THE Y JUST WITH OTHER HIGH-SCHOOLERS.” - HUNTER, AGE 18

here are incredible pressures facing teenage girls today. When topics become too tough to handle with their families and friends, these teens turn to the positive role models at the Salem YMCA. Girls Today is a program especially for middle and high school young women. It gives them a safe place to share and seek advice and express their opinions, while building new friendships and a sense of community.

CONFIDENCE

Girls Today empowers young women

Girls Today covers a wide variety of topics from peer pressure and substance abuse, to body image and education. Led by volunteers, the girls grow through peer-to-peer discussions, journaling and group work. Girls Today also invites guest speakers to share their wisdom. “I have had the privilege to coach two afternoon sessions,” says Ann Ziergiebel, Professor of Adolescent Education & Leadership at Salem State University. “It is a remarkable program. The girls are engaged in thoughtful, respectful dialogue that has a positive affect on their inner strength.” One example is that of Sharon from Salem. With confidence gained through the program, she was able to effectively communicate her feelings on bullying, by writing an essay that landed her center stage at a school assembly that was attended by Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick. Sharon, a middle school student, was chosen to read her work during Black Out Bullying Day. Told through the eyes of another, Sharon’s piece compelled others to think about the impact of their words and actions. She put her talents as a writer to work to speak for those who may not have the courage. Girls Today has also brought a new sense of confidence to 15-year-old Chanel, of Salem. “If it weren’t for Girls Today, I would just be sitting at home, eating unhealthy foods and watching TV. Instead I’m learning a lot about myself, making friends and feeling like I’m a part of the community.” While being a teenage girl is harder than ever, the work being done at the Y is easing this transition to adulthood. By digging to the root of the issues teens face, volunteers can build them up as leaders, so they can take on these tough challenges.

“GIRLS TODAY HELPS ME LET GO OF SOME STRESS AFTER SCHOOL AND BE A MORE POSITIVE, POLITE PERSON EVERYDAY.” CHANEL, AGE 15

FROM

W

ith a successful summer camp and a new Teen Leaders Club, the Haverhill YMCA has seen some bright young citizens grow up through the ranks. The pre-school swimmer of yesterday becomes the grade school basketball player of today, and will become the summer camp Counselor-In-Training (CIT) of tomorrow. With thousands of kids taking part in programs each year, the Y guides youth along their path to adulthood, growing tomorrow’s leaders.

COUNSELOR

Cultivating the next generation of leaders

Seventeen-year-old Kristen Gagnon, of Haverhill, knows this fact firsthand. She’s finishing up her senior year at Haverhill High and will be joining the student body at the University of Maine this fall. But first, she will enjoy one more summer at Camp Tricklin’ Falls, where over the last nine years she has grown from camper to CIT to camp counselor. What started as a fun summer adventure soon turned into the experience of a lifetime for this teen. “As I got older, I developed relationships that were renewed during the summers and I couldn’t wait to come back each year.” As a CIT, she learned important life lessons. “Being a CIT was really my first exposure to leadership. I learned a lot about working with others, caring for children, responsibility, and dedication before I was even old enough to be employed anywhere. I also got to take first aid and CPR classes, skills I can carry with me for life,” she says. Knowing firsthand what campers are feeling when they arrive for the summer helps her relate to the kids and put them at ease. She shares her personal experiences with them and teaches them the important lessons she’s learned over the years. “I don’t think I would be the same person I am today if I never went to camp. I wouldn’t be as responsible or knowledgeable, or be a leader.” Setting teens on the path to success is the most important thing the Y mentors do. The foundation is being built in each child, so they can be tomorrow’s leaders. By helping them reach their potential, we are ensuring a better future for our communities. The skills and life lessons that teens, like Kristen, learn in our programs give them the confidence to take on the world of adulthood.

“IF I HAD NEVER BEEN A CIT AT CAMP, I WOULDN’T BE AS RESPONSIBLE OR KNOWLEDGEABLE. I WOULDN’T BE A LEADER.” - KRISTEN, 17

LEARNING TO

PAY

T

he importance of giving back to the community is not a concept lost on teens. This current generation of young adults is more and more concerned with social responsibility. The teens in the Greater Beverly YMCA’s Teen Leaders Club are examples of this growing trend of community service among young people.

IT FORWARD

Y teens embrace social responsibility

Each week, 21 teens, from all different schools and backgrounds, come together to make a difference in Beverly, volunteering over 1,000 hours of their time in the past year. They collaborate on projects with other local non-profits including Beverly Bootstraps and Beverly Main Streets. They’re learning firsthand how great it feels to give back. One such project was to help Harborlight Community Partners (HCP), a non-profit that provides quality, affordable assisted living; independent elder housing; and apartments for working families. Teens sought out donations of used video games, controllers, hardware and accessories. GameStop of Beverly worked with the Y to buy back the games in exchange for cash, which the teens donated to HCP. “We were so pleased to work with the Teen Leaders,” said Andrew DeFranza, Executive Director, Harborlight Community Partners. “These young people demonstrate a real concern for their local community by raising money to support residents of senior affordable housing. Their efforts are an encouragement to all of us at HCP.” Fourteen-year-old Robert LeBel, a freshman at North Shore Technical High School, was one of the teens that helped raise $675 for HCP. “It was fun to watch the staff at GameStop ring the total in. I ran home to get one more game at the last minute to make sure we raised enough money. It just felt good to help and be a part of something,” Robert said. The leader behind the Leaders, Teen Director Eric Campbell, believes in these middle and high school students, who have so willingly dedicated their time to collaborating on community service projects with local organizations. “They’re learning the important lesson of social responsibility by giving back to their neighbors,” he says. What goes around, comes around, as the saying goes. But the lesson these teens are learning is that it feels good to just pay it forward.

“IT JUST FELT GOOD TO HELP AND BE A PART OF SOMETHING.” - ROBERT, 14

he Cape Ann YMCA has a long history of serving teens in the Gloucester and Rockport communities. The teen centers act as a home away from home for kids looking to socialize after school in a positive environment. The Teen Leaders Club has been a way for them to make a positive environment within their community. For over 17 years, the club has been a second family to many.

LEARNING THROUGH

SERVING OTHERS Teen Leaders Club making measurable change

The Teen Leaders Club plays an important role at the Y, from helping to fundraise for Y for All to volunteering at special events. They also step out of the Y to serve their community through volunteerism and fundraising for local non-profits like the Open Door Pantry, Toys for Tots, Gloucester Pridestride and the Red Cross. One successful fundraising event is their annual “Rock-a-thon” to Feed Cape Ann’s Hungry. Each January, members of the club, along with adult volunteer advisors, spend 24 sleepless hours swaying back and forth in rocking chairs. Club members solicit donations of non-perishable food items for their efforts. Since this amazing event started 15 years ago, the Teen Leaders have collected and dispensed more than 35,000 pounds of food to the Cape Ann Food Pantry and local households. This yearly tradition is a favorite of 17-year-old Shannon Gallagher of Gloucester. “It gets pretty silly when we are sleep deprived overnight,” she says. “I know we are accomplishing something huge. We count the cans and we’ve literally provided thousands of families with meals.” This Spring, Shannon will travel to New Orleans, LA, along with teens from across our Ys to help rebuild homes lost to Hurricane Katrina. Fourteen-year-old Zach White, of Gloucester, will be joining her. “I’ve really been looking forward to this trip. I think it’s great to be able to give people a home again. It gives them hope and something to look forward to,” Zach says. They’re learning that through their service, big or small, they are making a difference. “The stuff that we do as Teen Leaders… its giving teens a good name.”

“THE STUFF THAT WE DO AS TEEN LEADERS… IT IS GIVING TEENS A GOOD NAME.” - ZACH, 14

W

hen creating programs for teens, there is no better way than to ask actual teens what they are interested in. It seems like common sense, but the Ipswich Family YMCA really put it in practice. As our newest “teen center”, the Ipswich Family YMCA’s Teen Town involved middle and high school students in the process from the start and is teen driven from the ground up.

BELONG

Teen Town delivers as the “place to be” after school

After school, they flock to the gymnasium to play organized games of dodgeball, volleyball and floor hockey. On Saturday nights, the Y hosts “Hang Time”, a special teen only time for them to use all the facilities with their peers. It gives them the ability to stay active and fit, while socializing in a place that feels welcoming and offers positive role models. Teen Director, Nick Fitzgerald, always has some scheduled activities ready to go for Hang Time, but he also gives teens the chance to be creative and plan their own night. “The girls love to turn the lights out in the dance studio and play their music and dance. The boys love basketball and we will lower the hoops so they can practice slam-dunks, or play a 3-on-3 full court game. I have made a video game system available to them but they’ll say, ‘why would you play video games when you’re at the Y?’ They value the friendships they make here and the availability of fantastic facilities.” The teens truly appreciate all the new options the Y has opened up to them. “There isn’t much to do around town,” says 13-year-old, Ben Darisse. “If we weren’t at the Y, we’d just be walking around.” But the Y gives them a safe place to play sports and get exercise, surrounded by staff who can guide them in the right direction. It’s the perfect atmosphere for teens to learn to be independent and trustworthy. Teen Town is just picking up steam as more and more teens get involved each session. “My goal is to make the Y THE spot for teens to come for physical activity and to be with their friends,” says Nick. “We’re working on getting our Teen Leaders Club up and running so they can start volunteering in the community. I want to give them a place they want to be and where they can enjoy themselves.”

“THERE ISN’T MUCH TO DO AFTERSCHOOL, SO I LOVE COMING TO THE Y BECAUSE I CAN PLAY SPORTS AND SEE MY FRIENDS.” - BEN, 13
