CAPE ANN Y SCHOOL OF DANCE The Y now has a dance studio! 67 Middle Street– the Cape Ann Y Community Center has been renovated and we are able to offer ballet and other dance classes to all ages! Since Ballet is the traditional foundation for all Western dance disciplines, we will begin offering these classes for kids and adults. Sessions runs 8 weeks long and all participants will be invited to the end of the year recital in June 2015. Meet Rachel Whitman our Ballet InstructorRachel has studied at the Cambridge School of Ballet, the School of American Ballet in NYC, and at the Royal Ballet School in London, England. She became a member of the Boston Ballet in 1975 and was a featured dances with them! For years she ran the North Atlantic Ballet Company in Gloucester, MA. Rachel has taught and danced at every level of Ballet and is a patient teacher!

This 45 minutes class is designed to introduce the young students to creative dance, using movement, music and stories. Preparatory/Level I
Ages: 8-10 Fee: Members: $85 Community:$100 For children who have had pre-ballet or creative dance previously. This class will start the actual training in the fundamentals of ballet. Children will learn simple warm up exercises and stretches, how to stand and work at the barre correctly. Please bring a composition notebook and pencil to each class. Saturday 11:00am
Adult Beginning Ballet
Ages: 18+ Fee: Members: $100 Community: $125 Come learn the fundamentals of one of the oldest Western dance forms and the archaic French vocabulary. This is a deep muscle and body core work out to classical music. Open to men and women 18+, this is a 1 hour and 15 minute class.

Ages: 12-24 months with parent Fee: Y Member $50 Community $65 Hand eye coordination and object handling skills are developed along with small motor development. Some children even learn how to walk. Children will also work on some gymnastics skills on the spring floor, bars, beam and tumble trak. This class will also focus on peer socialization and is a great place to meet other parents and guardians. Class length is 30 minutes. CAY Tuesdays 10:30am

Ages: 2-3 years Fee: Y Member $50 Community $ 65 This class is for children who are both ready to be independent or still need to be accompanied by their parents. This class will not only focus on gymnastics skills, but will also touch on early childhood education. numbers, letters, colors and social skills will be taught and reinforced throughout an introduction of gymnastics. Teddy Bear Tumblers
Ages: 3-4 years Fee: Y Member $50 Community $65 Teddy Bear Tumblers is the first step in our recreational gymnastics program. Through games, songs and activities our little gymnasts will work on the basic elements. Children will work on gross motor skills and coordination through tumbles, balancing and tricks. Flip N’ Float
Ages: 4-7 years Fee: Y Member $98 Community $144 This class combines the fun in the pool and the gym! In the gym, we provide experiences which help your child develop physical and social skills. In the pool, your child will work on water adjustment, the use of flotation devices, water safety and having fun! This class starts with gymnastics followed by swimming, so we encourage children to come dressed in their bathing suits for an easy transition to swim. Class length is 90 minutes. Ages: 4-12 years Fee: Y Member $60 Community $85 This class is designed for development of gymnastics skills, uneven bars, balance beam, tumbling, and tumble track. Children work on basic gymnastics positions such as tuck, pike, straddle, squat and lunge. They will also work on skills such as handstands, cartwheels, round-offs, forward rolls and backward rolls. The children learn how to work well with others and improve their fine and gross motor skills, such as hand-eye coordination and readiness while learning gymnastics. Class length is 45 minutes. Gymnastics Level 2
Ages: 6-12 years Fee: Y Member $60 Community $85 This class is focused more on gymnastics skills rather than fine motor skills with work on cartwheels, round-offs, handstands, forward and backward rolls, and kids are introduced to the bridge. Students will learn skills on uneven-bars, balance beam, spring floor, trampoline and tumble trak. Children must have passed Level 1 or have the recommendation of an instructor. Service Learning Trips Coming into our fifth year of leading Y Teen Service Trips, what started as a “one shot deal”, has evolved into a major component of our work with teens throughout our YMCA. In 2010, we took fifteen teens to New Orleans to help the rebuilding efforts in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina & Rita. Through the experiences on that trip, that were universally described by our teens as “profound”, life-changing” and “awesome”, we were impelled to expand our thinking, and thus our scope of service.

This class is sensitive to the special needs of pregnant women and will accommodate individual needs. Everyone is free to work at their own pace during this gentle but effective work out.
