SUMMER LEARNING LOSS In Haverhill, where almost 15% of children live below the poverty line, our YMCA launched the Summer Learning pilot program in 2013 to keep children academically engaged all summer long. Free of charge to incoming third graders, the program is taught by certified teachers. In addition to grade-appropriate curricula, the Y provides opportunities to play and be active in our facilities as well as a free snack and lunch. Learning in a fun, hands-on enrichment program moves these kids forward in learning and decreases the ever-growing gap between low-and middle-income children.
