YMCA of the North Shore l 2012 Impact Report
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CEO DEAR FRIENDS, Each year at this time we are asked to summarize the previous year for all of our Y family; our staff, volunteers, donors, members and friends. We use this space to give everyone an overview of what the year was about and how far our Y has come in meeting the growing needs of all our constituents in all the communities we serve. What follows in this Community Impact Report will give you a great overview, and some real stories of what our Y has accomplished in the last year promoting Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility in our twenty-five North Shore communities. You will read about kids and teens expanding their horizons, stretching as individuals and embracing the needs of others. Kids growing, learning and developing into the adults our society needs. Teens, volunteering to make life better for others, all through creative, nurturing YMCA programs. You’ll also learn about our Y’s healthy living initiatives. Our Ys are working with schools toward better nutrition for kids and families. We are stimulating kids, teens, adults and seniors to work toward a more active, healthy lifestyle. Providing places, events and activities that enhance people’s health, while creating communities that embrace and emphasize such behaviors.
And lastly, you’ll note our Y’s great work in fostering social responsibility. At the core of everything we do at our Y is the concept of “all”. No matter the activity, it must involve “all”. Be it early learning, after school care, swim programs, fitness classes, family fun, membership... if it doesn’t include “all”, it’s not the Y. We thank our volunteers and our many donors for making the “all” possible. And how could we mention social responsibility without highlighting the work our Y has accomplished in affordable housing. It is our Y’s privilege to continue to build and to provide safe, affordable, dignified homes to 450 individuals and families on the North Shore. In retrospect, 2012 was another very strong year for our Y. We continue to expand and refine all the varied programs and opportunities we provide to the “all” we serve. We look forward to an even greater 2013.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT Nurturing the potential of every child and teen At the Y, we believe that all kids have amazing potential. Values and skills learned early are vital building blocks for life. Young people deserve an opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. From the youngest in our child care programs to the teens in our leadership development initiatives, the Y gives kids and teens a safe place to belong, build confidence and learn positive behaviors grounded in our core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
Y tEENS MAKE THEIR WORLD A BETTER PLACE YMCA Service Learning Programs Today’s generation of youth has a strong understanding of the value of volunteerism. We take great pride in mentoring teens and fostering their commitment to service. Our Teen Centers and Y staff do an essential job of giving teens a place where they belong. We deepen that connection with teens in Y Service Learning programs, involving them in local, regional and global service projects. In 2012, more than 65 teens from five of our YMCAs took that learning
to heart as they planned, raised funds and journeyed to New Orleans to help in the rebuilidng efforts from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. This first cross-North Shore Y trip gave teens a new appreciation for many things in their own lives. Teens learned more about themselves and felt inspired to do more for their local communities. New ideas were born. Salem Y teens returned home to build a community garden where they planted and harvested vegetables for their local food pantry. Cape Ann Y teens volunteered at the Open Door in Gloucester serving meals to those in need.

YMCA Camps Give Kids A Fun Way to Learn
Learning starts at birth. A 6-month-old learns from touch and feel, while a 2-year-old begins to learn from hands-on activities and instruction. Preschoolers use their curiosity and imagination to become creative thinkers. Learning truly does begin at an early age. More than 450 infants, toddlers and preschoolers at our six Y Early Education Centers are getting a jump on their academic success.
Learning doesn’t need to stop during the summer. Instead, it takes a different shape in Y camps, using both indoor AND outdoor resources as a classroom.
For some, our programs give peace of mind to parents who need care while they work. But for all parents, we are building a strong foundation of learning as they prepare their child for academic success. The Y’s Early Education program is unique because of the social interaction kids have with other children from all walks of life. One (1) out of every three (3) children benefits from public support and/or the Y Financial Assistance Fund. True to our mission, we give “all kids” the chance to learn, grow and thrive.
Options abound for parents when it comes to Y camps. For more than 4,500 campers, across 50 different North Shore Y camps, learning takes shape in science camps, sports camps, adventure camps, traditional day camps and more. Y programs have a purpose. The intention of summer camps is to give kids a fun way to stay engaged in learning. Studies show that kids who join in summer programs continue to move ahead in learning while their counterparts often take a step backward. As a Swampscott mom explained, “My daughter has a reading disability and she works hard all school year. I wanted camp to be fun, and I was pleasantly surprised that fun and learning went hand-in-hand.”

Reducing the Achievement Gap
Our Ys cherish the working relationship we have with our local schools. Chris Lovasco, YMCA of the North Shore Chief Operating Officer, explains, “Because of the great relationships with our principals and school officials, kids and families have a smoother transition from school to after school for continued learning. ”
Research shows that children in low-income households enter Kindergarten academically behind children in middleand upper-income households. As they move through school, these children fall further and further behind due to family and community environments that don’t effectively support their social, emotional and cognitive development.
The Y Leads 22 Afterschool Programs on the North Shore.
But there is hope. With the right nurturing, these children can catch up and potentially prevent a future of economic hardship. Our Y is devoted to reducing the achievement gap with innovative programs for “ALL” regardless of one’s ability to pay.

HEALTHY LIVING Improving our communities’ health and well-being At the Y, we believe that being healthy means more than simply being physically active. It is about maintaining a balanced spirit, mind and body. The Y is a leading voice on health and well-being issues, a leader in fighting chronic disease, and committed to empowering people to lead fuller lives. We bring families closer together, promote healthy living, and foster connections through fitness, sports, fun and shared interests. As a result, millions of youth, adults and families receive the support, guidance and resources they need to become and stay healthy.

Becoming A Change Agent Partnerships Make Change Happen Each of our YMCAs has created strong ties to community partners that help us develop innovative wellness programs, reach sedentary populations and fund memberships for those who experience a financial barrier to programs and services. There is one powerful partnership that transcends the walls of the Y. Thanks to a grant secured by the Greater Beverly Y, a coalition of “change agents” (organizations) was formed and they are making environmental and policy changes that will improve the health of Beverly residents. Be Healthy Beverly, as it’s known, debuted its first “change”
with Fruit & Vegetable bars in all five (5) elementary schools. Change like this only happens when willing partners like school officials, hospital leadership and other agencies work together to identify needed changes and then take action. In just a few short months, parents report that kids are trying new foods and making healthier eating choices. Kids are looking forward to the next Be Healthy Beverly effort - raised gardens at their school where they will plant, nurture and harvest their own fruits and vegetables.

Y FIT-Tastic Kids Making an Impact
5th Grade Step It Up Program Launched Across North Shore
One key to fighting childhood obesity is prevention. Kids are smart. Many know what they need to do, but lack the guidance and motivation to actually DO IT. FIT-Tastic Kids is the Y’s answer to helping teach children and families about the benefits of eating healthy and being active. School-age children learn to make healthy food choices, find ways to get moving and have fun being healthy. Thanks to partnerships with local hospitals and community health care providers, FIT-Tastic Kids is free for children and also includes an eight-week youth membership. A father of two FIT-Tastic girls from the Ipswich Y, Richard Dort, sees the impact of the program, “The girls really like what they’re learning in FIT-Tastic Kids. I see that they are more aware of nutrition – especially portions – and exercise. Since they’ve been in the program, we go to the Y more as a family.”
Research shows that healthy habits “stick” long-term when introduced at a young age. That’s why the Y’s Step it Up initiative is having a big impact on 5th graders across the North Shore. Launched in 2009 in Beverly, Step It Up made its way to all six North Shore YMCAs in 2012, encouraging thousands of elementary school students to track their daily steps over four weeks. More than 20 schools kicked off the initiative with a fun, active event where kids received a t-shirt and pedometer. An astounding 265 million steps were taken in a 30-day period by 5th graders. This initiative created “buzz” and excitement among 4th graders who are already anticipating record-breaking class steps when they get the chance to Step It Up in 5th grade next year.

HEALTHY LIVING YMCA Road Races Inspire Family From Couch to 5K “Anyone can do it!” That’s what Caterina Mullen, member of the Haverhill YMCA, said when asked how she managed to finish all 12 races in the North Shore YMCA Road Race Series this past year. More impressively, Caterina, her husband, and their three children, ranging in ages from 9 to 12 – the Mullen Five Team - finished all 12 races together.
Seniors Improve Their Health at Harborlight Community Partners What began as an osteoporosis prevention program for Beverly seniors at Turtle Creek & Turtle Woods has grown into a strong partnership of healthy living. Residents at the Harborlight Community Partners facilities have become more active and more engaged with on-site fitness programs.
Improving our kids’ health and well-being requires a collaborative approach. Our Y is fortunate to have the following organizations (and more) share our vision and help fund our efforts in fighting childhood obesity - Beverly & Addison Gilbert Hospitals (members of Lahey Health), Boston Bruins Foundation, Merrimack Valley Hospital, North Shore Medical Center, and Pentucket Medical Associates.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Giving back and providing support to our neighbors At the Y, we believe that when we work together, we move individuals, families and communities forward. Since 1858, our Y has responded to society’s most pressing needs by developing innovative, community-based solutions and uniting people from all walks of life to participate in and work for positive social change. Whether advocating for affordable, healthy food options for underserved communities, or giving people an affordable place to live, the Y is committed to empowering people with the resources and support needed to live healthy, connected and secure lives.
14
Social Responsibility
giving people a safe, affordable place to call home YMCA Affordable Housing Initiatives It’s a documented fact - the #1 need on the North Shore is affordable housing. It’s a need our YMCA takes seriously as evidenced by the 300 units of affordable rental housing managed by the Y. We are committed to giving adults and families a safe, affordable place to live. “We do more than give people a place to lay their head at night,” explains Jack Meany, YMCA of the North Shore CEO. “We build community for people. We’re proud of this work and how our Y is transforming neighborhoods and communities in our seven housing initiatives.”
In 2012 the Y completed Phase I of the Holcroft Park Homes development in Beverly with plans to finish Phase II in 2013. The Y also began construction on the Haverhill YMCA’s Wadleigh House, finishing the last of seven Y housing renovation projects and providing residents a dignified and affordable community in which to live. Although our Y is proud of its facility renovations, Y housing is not about the place and space. It’s about the people; and for 450 people, the Y is home.

BackPack Attack! Gives kids school supplies
YMCA Case Managers Help Parents Navigate Funding System
Families in Need Get Resources for “Back to School”
Y child care isn’t about caring only for the child, it’s about caring and supporting the entire family. Our Ys serve over 450 children receiving state support for early education and afterschool child care.
Getting kids ready for the start of the school year can be a costly endeavor. For struggling families, it’s an insurmountable task. In 2012, the Cape Ann YMCA and its members organized the 2nd annual Back Pack Attack! program.
For some families, navigating the state funding system can be a challenge. Many are unsure of where to go and to whom they can turn to for essential support. Y Case Managers are true friends to these families, working one-on-one with parents to secure services that help improve the learning for their child and their family. The relationships don’t just stop at the doors of our YMCAs. Y staff fill another important role during the holiday season. “They act like “Santa”, reaching out to Y donors and inspiring action to provide gifts for needy families during the holiday season,” shares Tracy Fuller, YNS Child Care Executive Director. “This past year, over 200 kids had a holiday filled with love and gifts from hundreds of donors who answered our call. “
Twenty-five (25) families, selected from the Veteran’s Memorial School, were given back packs for the start of the school year. Each back pack was filled wtih essential school supplies needed for kids in grades K-5. Brian Flynn, Cape Ann YMCA Child Care Services Director, organized the program. He explains its impact, “These families were so grateful for the support. Many of these kids wouldn’t have had the chance for a new backpack or even a quarter of the essential supplies they need for a successful learning experience this year. Our donors were so proud to be able to help families who struggle financially.”

Safe Exchange Program
We do important work at the Y. But we don’t do it alone. In fact, Y donors give generously to support 12,000 children, adults and families who need our help.
Separation and divorce are stressful events for all members of a family. Parents and children need to develop new routines that are safe and healthy for the family.
More than 3,500 donors make a charitable gift to our Y each year. It’s these heroes that allow our Y to have a significant impact on the North Shore.
The YMCA, in partnership with the Essex County Family and Probate Court, has created a “Safe Exchange” program where families going through divorce can use Y facilities to help with custodial visits. Our staff help make the process fun for the kids and less stressful for the adults. Our goal is to help kids feel safe during this difficult family time.
$2.5 million in support The Y is “FOR ALL”. More than 12,000 kids, adults and families benefit from the Y’s Financial Assistance Fund. That’s one (1) in every five (5) people who get help from the Y for essential programs and services. More than 3,500 Y donors give generously to help their neighbors in need.
