FRIENDS, FUN AND SUMMER SUN
LYNCH/VAN OTTERLOO YMCA SUMMER CAMPS 2014 www.northshoreymca.org
WHAT WILL YOUR CHILD ACHIEVE AT CAMP? Summer Camp plays an important part in the lives of our communities’ youth as they develop towards adulthood. Children realize important life lessons and make memories each day as they learn from their surroundings and peers. In a Y camp, kids make friends, have fun and stay active while they discover who they are and what they can achieve. Whatever interest your child has, there is a Y camp for them. Led by caring, highly trained staff, you can rest assured that your child is in a safe, nurturing environment. Our camps help kids grow to become happy, healthy adults with the self-confidence to accomplish anything they set their minds to.

SUMMER LEARNINg LOSS
During the summer children experience “summer learning loss” when they are not involved in high quality programs with opportunities for skill building. As a result, young people can forget up to 2 months of academic instruction, particularly in the areas of reading and math when they are not in school. Camps provide the opportunity to reduce summer learning loss in an expanded learning environment where children are engaged and have an opportunity for enrichment. At the Y we are committed to helping prevent summer learning loss. In addition to offering camps in STEM subjects (CSI camp, Marine Technology camp, Young Scientists camp and more) all of our camps have activities that focus on reading comprehension, progressive skill building, and problem solving. Research has shown that kids who are involved in camps over the summer are more prepared for the next school year.
Nancamp 2014 Celebrating 22 years of sponsoring Y camperships for kids dealing with cancer. Nancamp is delighted to have sponsored over 500 summer day camperships over the past 22 years for children who have cancer or who have been treated in the past, children who have recently had a parent or sibling pass away from cancer and children who have a parent or sibling suffering from cancer. We look forward to working with the Y to sponsor children dealing with cancer for many more years.

YMCA CHILDREN’S ISLAND CAMP Summer camp offers children a magical world of adventure. On the Island there is nothing to turn on, re-charge, or re-boot; nature does that all on her own. Our imaginations do the rest. At Children’s Island YMCA Camp, we offer sailing, arts and crafts, hiking, rock climbing, kayaking, swimming, archery, and storytelling around the campfire. Our traditions— The purple pit, color wars, theme days, triangle swim, ranger overnights, and flagpole songs — introduce campers to whim, and flight of fancy, and to the roles that creativity and imagination play in life. Here, kids revel in the wonders of childhood. In this environment surrounded by the ocean and positive role models, friendships are quickly-made and long-lasting. The experience far exceeds anything a power cord could ever supply or words can ever describe. For over 50 years Children’s Island, a 25 acre island one mile off the coast of Marblehead and Salem, has operated as a camp for children. Campers from across the North Shore and around the world have had an unique and wonderful camp experience on “the island”. We hope your camper will join us this summer as we make more memories!

Children’s Island Day Camp Camper Age: grades 2-6 Children’s Island is the perfect place for a child looking for a classic, fun summer camp experience. Campers begin their day with a quick boat ride and pre-camp activities led by staff around the island. Once everyone arrives, campers are directed to their groups, meet their counselors, and get things going with flagpole announcements, songs, and the daily schedule. Over the course of the day, campers participate in a variety of activities including: Swimming, kayaking in the ocean, rowing, fishing, tide pooling, nature walks, fun group competitions, ranger activities to develop camping skills & personal responsibility, sports, archery, arts and crafts, bouldering and other camp games. Every afternoon a camper’s choice period allows campers to try new activities or revisit an old favorite. As the day wraps up everyone meets back at the flag pole before a relaxing boat ride back to shore. By the end of the session, campers have forged lasting relationships with friends and staff and created memories that will last until they return next summer and create new ones all over again. To ensure a quality camp experience with time to learn skills, engage in activities, form friendships and build memories that last a lifetime, programs on Children’s Island are designed around a two week session.
