GREATER BEVERLY YMCA AFTER SCHOOL
IN THIS ISSUE
HAUNTED HISTORY In the month of October the children of the after school will become short story writers. They will pen ghost stories taking place in early Beverly, Massachusetts. Our younger participants will write lighthearted ghost stories as our older participants will delve deeper and create macabre tales. Age appropriate graphic organizers will be used to help the children craft the accounts while exploring; exposition, developing a plot, characters, setting and resolution.

A historic timeline will be referenced to discover events in Beverly from the 1600s –1900, settings for the ghost stories. Together the children will discuss ideas, listen to others and collaborate in finding out what it was like to live in Beverly during the time their ghost lived. They will learn about anachronisms and consider the time period to avoid historical inaccuracies. Bringing the unit together, each group will construct a haunted house that will become part of a haunted Beverly village. To do this, children will discover the architecture of New England Houses; Colonial, Federal, Gothic Revival and Victorian Era styles. The houses will feature architectural elements common to the time. Observation and creativity will be paired to turn the house into a haunted dwelling for their ghost short to take place. Our Beverly Haunted Village will be on display at the Sterling Center Y from October 20th to Nov 2. Please stop in to see the children's accomplishment.
