OUR COMMUNITY IS EVER-CHANGING,
Jay ParkerThe Y faced many new challenges over the last two years. While working through these challenges, we learned much about ourselves, our community’s needs, and how we can best meet those needs.
We transformed our spaces to serve our neighbors and friends during the pandemic. We partnered with other community-serving organizations to amplify the Y’s mission, and just as we have always done, we boldly stepped in to meet these challenges head-on. Together, we’ve supported those who need us most.
Cindy Forren
Many challenges have been overcome in the last two years, and while there are likely more ahead, our Y leadership and staff continue to move forward, serving our members and community. Membership is on the rise, programs are back on track, and fantastic renovations are planned for our Downtown and Express locations, largely thanks to our generous donors. The recent addition of EGYM reminds us that the Y is committed to offering cutting-edge fitness options to members. In short, it’s an exciting time to be a part of the Y family!
CEO YMCA of Central Virginia
We will continue to provide critical programs such as Power Scholars, mitigating the achievement gap to keep our children on grade level, community health programs to address the growing need for healthy living for individuals of all ages and abilities and ensuring that all families and individuals are supported to reach their God-given potential. Whatever it is, we will be here for you and our community.
We invite you to read over the 2022 Annual Report. The accomplishments of the Y are extraordinary, and I believe the best is yet to come.
Board President YMCA of Central Virginia
As they have for over 160 years, the Y will always strive towards lasting personal and social change by working together from all walks of life to invest in our children and neighbors, resulting in a stronger and more integrated community.

Our commitment to inclusion creates a better world and tomorrow for our children. The Y is made up of people of all ages and from every walk of life working side by side to strengthen communities.

LIVESTRONG AT THE YMCAPOWER SCHOLARS ACADEMY
Students can lose two to three months of academic gain during the summer, causing many children to begin the school year behind their peers.
YMCA of Central Virginia’s Power Scholars Academy aims to reduce summer learning loss typically experienced by school-aged children, particularly those who live in under-served areas.
The five-week program, which is offered to students at no cost, focuses on math, literacy,
and STREAM learning and incorporates social and emotional learning throughout the day. Breakfast, lunch, and a snack are provided, as well as enrichment programs such as visual arts, water safety, and physical wellness.
Kids who participate in Power Scholars Academy are returning to school two to three and a half months ahead of their peers! This past summer, we served 858 kids in partnership with Lynchburg City Schools and Amherst County Schools.
In just six weeks, I witnessed literacy and math scores grow over 2+ months’ worth; for some students, their scores doubled. Students who previously struggled with comprehension were now reading independently and fluently, writing stories, and using essential vocabulary to analyze texts.
I could say so much about the Power Scholars program and the change it’s made for our students, but I believe one-second grader asked me the fundamental question that sums up the entirety of the program.
“Mrs. Burks, can I read my book to you?” I nodded my head, sat beside the student, and listened intently as the Scholar gained Power.

The Susan Landergan Learning Fund, created in 2019, honors retired YMCA of Central Virginia CEO Susan Landergan. Susan has an immense passion for children and their families and spent her career building opportunities and initiatives for those facing obstacles and barriers keeping them from succeeding.
One such program is our Power Scholars Academy. In partnership with Lynchburg City Schools, Power Scholars Academy began in 2014 with just 20 kids at RS Payne Elementary, situated in one of Lynchburg’s most underserved communities.
The partnerships Susan cultivated led to a successful program where we now serve close to 1,000 kids during the summer - effectively reducing summer learning loss and increasing chances for students to succeed no matter their socioeconomic background.
Through community partnerships and statelevel recognition, the YMCA of Central Virginia qualified for and received grants and funding for Power Scholars Academy, allowing the Susan Landergan Learning Fund to grow and appreciate. This has prompted another opportunity for growth.
Developing kids and helping them reach their God-given potential is at the core of our mission, which is why we are enhancing our Youth Development initiatives. We are expanding our reach with a newly appointed Association Director of Youth Development. This role oversees the growth and quality of our Power Scholars Academy, Before and After School Programs, Summer Camp, the newly reimagined Downtown Teen Center, and all other youth education and empowerment programs. These programs target some of our most vulnerable youth, increasing access to resources to keep them connected, engaged, and on a path to success.
The Susan Landergan Learning Fund is integral in ensuring the sustainability of these programs. We thank our donors and supporters for their commitment to providing these programs for generations to come.
Darienne Montgomery
Cancer Survivor, LIVESTRONG at the YMCA Participant
“LIVESTRONG at the YMCA was a great benefit to both my mental and physical health.”
MEET DARIENNE
In 2019, Darienne Montgomery received the news that the concerning lumps in her lymph nodes were cancer. Stage 2B Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, to be exact. As she began her first of 12 eventual rounds of chemo, her compromised immune system required that she enter into a protective quarantine–months before it became a worldwide trend.
As chemo-induced isolation merged into pandemic-induced isolation through the summer of 2020, she finished her chemo treatments. She began to look around for support and community as a cancer survivor. In September 2020, she discovered LIVESTRONG at the YMCA. The connections she made with other cancer survivors were life-changing for Darienne. In addition to the supportive community relationships, she found the ability to return to a healthy activity level in a safe environment. This was a wonderful opportunity for both her mental health and her physical strength.
As she began to realize the impact of the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program on her new friends and the broader Lynchburg community, she became more involved in supporting the program, first as an assistant in the program and then as an employee of the YMCA. To this day, she
continues to partner with the program and individuals involved in it and helps to raise donations to enable the YMCA to continue its outreach programs.
“It’s come full circle,” she says, “I think this is a great program and would encourage anybody that feels that they need support while going through their treatment, or after their treatment… this is a great palace to do that.”
MEET MR. KEITH
After ten years of faithful attendance and membership, Keith Kervin is a fixture at the YMCA of Central Virginia. Lovingly known as Mr. Keith by all, he is recognized and treasured by the entire staff and regularly texts them updates about his life and YMCA experience. For Mr. Keith, consistency and reliability are paramount to his overall health and well-being. And for the Y, Mr. Keith is family.
During the Covid lockdown, Keith could not attend YMCA classes in person due to his compromised immunity. As an Autistic adult, he struggled with this disruption in his daily routine. Feeling disconnected and disjointed, he describes this period as “boring.” After Keith received his Covid vaccine, he called the Y, filled with much enthusiasm and excitement, to set up a meeting with Y staff so they could help create a weekly plan for him to return to the Y that would accommodate his schedule.
Mr. Keith, a part-time employee of the non-profit Lynchburg Grows, is a recipient of a donor-supported scholarship awarded by the YMCA of Central Virginia to help cover the cost of his monthly dues. “I like the scholarship because it helps me come here… for me, it’s kind of expensive without it,” Keith explains.
Keith’s story is a beautiful example of the role the YMCA and its staff, volunteers, and donors play in the community. Keith depends on his participation in YMCA programs to stay healthy and active, and his relationships with the staff and volunteers form a vital part of his supportive social network.
The friendly, accepting atmosphere and the genuine interest of instructors and other staff support his well-being and happiness.
Keith Kervin YMCA Member, and Scholarship RecipientBUILDING FOR A BETTER US© Capital Campaign Update
During the fall of 2022, community leaders and YMCA donors, staff, and volunteers gathered to celebrate and reflect on the transformative work the YMCA is doing in our community. During the event, Jay Parker, YMCA of Central Virginia CEO, and Cindy Forren, YMCA of Central Virginia Board President announced that the Y officially launched the Building for a Better US! Capital Campaign to completely transform the current Downtown YMCA into the new Schewel-Clark Family YMCA.
Forren went on to thank Marc Schewel, who was in attendance, and his family for their $2 million leadership gift to jump-start this effort. “Under Marc’s leadership as the Chair of the Building for a Better US! Capital Campaign, I am also very excited to announce that through the generous support of over 100 community leaders, Board members, and staff – we have now raised over $7.6 million toward our $11.5 million campaign goal,” Forren announced.
And now, just a few short months later, the Y is pleased to announce that they are even closer to their goal, with the current total pledged or raised is $8.1 million.
At the heart of this building transformation is a new 3-story, 23,000-square-foot addition to replace the current lower portion of the building facing Church Street. This “Y of the future” will provide an open, welcoming environment with critical new spaces for community health programs, youth education and support, individual and group wellness, and family programming.
The YMCA of Central Virginia has announced that they have selected the architect and general contractor to complete the proposed renovations to the Downtown YMCA, effectively transforming it into the Schewel-Clark Family YMCA.
Local architectural firm, Dominion Seven, has been selected as the project architect. The YMCA of Central Virginia has a long and successful history of partnering together, including architect Blair Smith’s involvement on the Fauber Architect team that completed the Jamerson Family YMCA.
The local contractor, Jamerson-Lewis Construction company, is the General Contractor. Jamerson-Lewis Construction Company and Dominion Seven will be working hand-in-hand in the design-build of the Downtown YMCA transformation to ensure the most efficient and cost-effective design and construction plan possible.
Key new features of the Schewel-Clark Family YMCA include:
• State-of-the-art 6,000+ square foot Wellness Center
• Large Group Exercise Studios and dedicated Yoga & Pilates Studio
• Youth Learning Center to provide academic enrichment opportunities for children, as well as collaborative space for community partners
• Large multi-purpose Community Center for special programming, educational classes, social activities, and meetings
• Dedicated Teen Center space for safe and structured programming for teens
• Interactive 2-story Kids Adventure Zone play area for children ages 5–12
• Child Watch Area for high-quality care of infants through 5-year-olds
• Teaching Kitchen to include instructional healthy cooking classes for all ages
“While we have much more work to meet our ambitious campaign goal, we are confident we will get there. Today’s YMCA includes everyone, regardless of income, background, or social status, so we invite everyone to get involved by giving to the campaign or sharing the news with others.”

“The Y is quite possibly the most inclusive organization in Lynchburg. People of all types come together at the Y, with the same goal: to be healthier. Finding a place where everyone is truly welcome is rare, I want to see that grow.”
- Colin“The YMCA gives me the motivation to stay healthy and strong, the opportunity to connect with friends, and to remain engaged with my community.
