YMCA Centre for Immigrant Programs provides settlement support to newcomer children, youth and families through inclusive and welcoming programs and outreach services which stretch across Nova Scotia. Our goal is to help immigrants new to Canada settle into their new homes all while educating the mainstream population on the challenges newcomers face while adjusting and adapting to new language, culture, climate and community.

Programs and Services YMCA Youth Outreach Providing developmental, volunteer and community activities for immigrant youth ages 13 to 18, YMCA Youth Outreach focuses on developing a sense of belonging and social responsibility through recreational programming, volunteer efforts and educational workshops. Immigrant youth gain valuable leadership skills and activities are tailored to meet the interests of youth. Activities include: Homework Club • Sports and Recreation Workshops • Volunteering Field Trips Guest Speakers

YMCA School Settlement Working in partnership with schools in our community, YMCA School Settlement provides on-site support service to 28 elementary, junior and senior high schools in the HRM. We’re focused on the wellness of immigrant families and students, and provide one-on-one support, advocacy and referrals to meet every family’s unique needs. Activities include: Orientation to School and Community Solution-focused Counseling • School Staff Support Academic Support • Service Support Asset Building Home Liaison • Advocacy • Referrals

YMCA Active Living Providing opportunities for immigrants to live and lead a healthy lifestyle within the YMCA and their communities, YMCA Active Living invites immigrants of all ages to engage in health and fitness programs, social activities and family/intergenerational programming. Activities include: Talking Circles • Zumba • Soccer Older Adults Active Day (55+) • Fitness for Men Yoga Community Connections Referrals • Health and Wellness Education Sessions Intergenerational Activities • Programming for Seniors

YMCA Saturday Morning Study Skills Helping children who are new to Canada in grades primary to six develop and enhance skills which will enable them to be successful in school. We’re focused on providing support to students to practice their language skills in a safe, fun and interactive environment. Activities include: English Speaking Practice • Writing • Vocabulary Building • Study Skills • Art • Music • Cooking • Games • Field Trips
