YMCA IMPACT REPORT

MOVING FORWARD TOGETHER YMCA of Metuchen, Edison, Woodbridge and South Amboy 2022

Thank You,

We approached 2022 with renewed hope. A determination to upright that apple cart that was toppled over by COVID-19. The hope to see our classrooms filled with students again, to see our fitness rooms filled to the brim with members, and our swimming pools overflowing with people learning a new skill, practicing for a swim team competition, taking a therapeutic class, or just relaxing and getting in a great workout.

In 2022, we felt the energy returning to our branches and staff. Reinvigorated by the promise of a world absent of a pandemic, or at least one held at bay, the excitement extended to not only our staff, but our members and the community as well. This past year, we began a transition from a ‘pandemic-support’ approach by returning our focus to the future and the greater good. Our childcare, wellness, and social responsibility services all received a tremendous boost from the community, local governments and generous donors alike. When the pandemic hit, I knew that we would all be shaken to the core by the sheer enormity of the impact it would have. But we have come out of it as a stronger, healthier organization that is even better positioned to serve the multifaceted needs of our diverse communities.

With our roots in the community going back more than 100 years, we recognize both the tremendous progress made, as well as the continued need to contribute to all the communities we serve by becoming more inclusive and equitable. Our 20-year history of our unique partnership with the Jewish Community Center was cause for celebration. The diligence of our staff, boards, and volunteers promises to advance our inclusivity, making us an even more welcoming organization in the years to come.

At the YMCA of MEWSA we serve relentlessly with our community until all can thrive in each stage of life. Each day, in our Y centers, at our camps, in our schools, beyond our walls in communities across Middlesex County we come ready to face the challenges that will make us all stronger at the end of the day. We appreciate you joining us as we continue our commitment to strengthening our communities.

MISSION

We are dedicated to building strong kids, strong families and strong communities through programs that develop values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. The YMCA serves all people, regardless of age, religion, gender or financial means and is committed to helping everyone develop a healthy spirit, mind and body.

BOA RD EMERIT U S BOA RD OF DIRECT ORS

My child is very shy, especially around new people. Within about a week we saw a change in his behavior. He was coming home excited to tell us about what he worked on that day and couldn't wait to go back each day, which makes it so much easier on us as parents." -

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

Developing a new generation of changemakers

At the Y, we give young people a safe place to belong, to build confidence and to learn positive behaviors from strong role models who exemplify the core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

Wheather it be child care, early education, youth swim and sports, camp or mental health, our programs and staff provide the support and opportunities needed to help our youth learn, grown and thrive.

1 in 3 children who participated in our enrichment and life-saving programs received financial support.

1,828 campers enjoyed their summer while learning new skills, improving self-esteem and making friends.

1,049 youth and teens were taught team-building skills and social learning through youth sports.

ADAM'S STORY

After a couple of unsuccessful gym attempts, I tried out the YMCA. I didn't have big hopes for any transformations since I was unmotivated, skinny and shy to go to the gym.

After 6 months of training with a personal trainer, I learned how to lift weights properly. I gained muscle mass and I feel much healthier over all. The staff delivers a perfect mix of toughness, kindness and humor.

Thanks to the Y, I feel proud of even my smallest achievements!

HEALTHY LIVING

IMPROVING WELL-BEING IN MIND, BODY, AND SPIRIT

Our mission, centered on the balance of spirit, mind, and body, provides programs and resources that encourage healthy living. We strive to make it easy for our members to work out by having knowledgeable staff who care, resources and equipment that motivates healthy living and a welcoming, supportive community who encourages their well-being.

959 individuals received financial assistance for membership through our Open Doors program.

3,350 youth learned water safety skills aimed at preventing drowning accidents and saving lives. More than 104 lifeguards trained.

Over 2,000 seniors come to our Y each year to find connections, stay active and healthy.

THANK YOU

Thanks to the generosity of the public and private donors who give to the Y, our community is stronger. Every day we work side by side with our neighbors to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background can learn, grown and thrive.

I enjoy the Yoga program very much – it’s a total body work-out, all while sitting down. I get a kick out of following along! Lihan is bubbly, energetic, and has a great personality. I always look forward to her coming and conducting the program for us!

YMCA of MEWSA 07

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

INSPIRING ACTION AND CREATING EQUITABLE COMMUNITIES

As an organization dedicated to serving and strengthening our community, we inspire members of the community to make a difference the lives of others with small and large acts of kindness. Your support helps others who are less fortunate to access our life-changing opportunities.

$500,000 - half a million dollars - raised for financial assistance to provide Y programming and membership to more than 800 families.

1,998 lives saved thanks to all who donated blood at our blood drives throughout our communities.

319 teens participated in programs that provided safe places for them to gather, connect, plan service projects and grow leadership skills.

Your support in 2022 has made an incredible impact. This Annual Report highlights what that support has accomplished through your generosity and commitment to who we are and what we do. We invite you to join us in this movement to continue to strengthen the foundations of our community in 2023.

CELEBRATING 20 YEARS

The Edison Community Campus, the country’s first collaboration between a Jewish Community Center and YMCA, celebrated its 20th anniversary on December 15, 2022. In its 20 years, the Community Campus has significantly impacted the lives of more than 20,000 residents of the Edison community and beyond.

Throughout the 20 years, more than:

10,000 people have been taught lifesaving skills through swim lessons

6,000 children prepared for kindergarten in preschool programs

2,000 children were provided with a safe place to go to after school

200 cancer survivors graduated from the Y's LiveSTRONG® program

4,000 personal training clients were guided to improve their health

2,000 swim team members were taught the importance of teamwork

67,000 seniors visited and were given the chance to socialize, overcome grief and continue lifelong learning

We could not be more grateful to reach this incredible milestone. This collaboration strengthens both organizations and allows us to be even more impactful in the lives of our community members.

GIVE NOW

Each year, volunteers and donors help us make our community a better place to live through the YMCA’s Annual Support Campaign. Through generous donations to our Annual Support Campaign, we can give every individual the Y experience, regardless of their ability to pay. Every dollar raised through our campaign allows us to impact thousands of lives each year.

With your support, our essential programs and services help lift the health mindset of an entire community, boost the potential of thousands of children, and build family togetherness.
