Dear Friends: As each year grows into the next, we are grateful for each of you and your commitment to our community and our Y. 2018 was a year of building for us – of growth, additions and new partners. We welcome to our downtown campus our new, named partner, SwedishAmerican, who has invested in our future and helped us improve our infrastructure. OrthoIllinois has also joined our movement by making physical therapy more convenient and accessible to those in need of their care. We are delighted to have them housed in the SwedishAmerican Riverfront YMCA and appreciate their dedication to service in our region. They also further invested in our Y by supporting our new, state-of-the-art climbing wall now located in the activity center. Speaking of the activity center at SAY, it now bears the name of our loyal donors, Rick and Lana Engen. The Engens are a shining example of people who build one another up and who support important causes in the community through their donations and their time. Thank you! And, when we talk about building, the new cardio and strength centers at the SwedishAmerican Riverfront YMCA and the Northeast Family YMCA now boast all new equipment designed to help our members reach their health goals. In Ephesians, chapter 4, verse 16, we read, “From whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love” Thank you all, members, donors, leaders and friends, for being a part of our growth and a part of the body of people at our Y who are working to build up one another in love to serve our mission. With Gratitude,

BRENT PENTENBURG CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

DR. DAVE GOMEL CHIEF VOLUNTEER OFFICER 2

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

Imagine the feeling of conquering a difficult challenge - then take that challenge 50 feet in the air. That is what Isaiah, a 7th grade Soaring Eagle Camper, did this summer at Camp Winnebago. He maneuvered his way through the high ropes course - something many people would never even consider out of fear. Isaiah has autism, and in the past, he would have been turned away from Camp because we didn’t have the training or capacity to serve children with special needs. Thanks to the National Inclusion Project and a grant from the William S. Howard Charitable Trust, we can offer the For All Inclusion Program.

At the Y, we believe no child should have to feel this way. The For All Inclusion Program is our response to a decline in inclusion services in our community. This program is not designed to provide alternative spaces or activities for these children, but rather to offer a level of support that allows them to participate in each day’s planned activities.

YMCA Children’s Learning Center

Aquatics

Remember when the only job of being a kid was to have fun? At the YMCA Children’s Learning Center, we believe fun is the key to learning. We like to say confidence is grown here. Our program helps prepare kids ages six weeks to Pre-K for each stage of learning and ensures they are ready for kindergarten. We have created a safe and supportive environment that promotes each child’s self-confidence, curiosity, cooperation, and creativity.

Drowning is the second-leading cause of unintentional injury-related death for children ages 1 to 14 years old. As “America’s Swim Instructor,” the Y is the most accessible community resource to encourage a lifelong enjoyment of swimming. Learning to swim at the Y is more than just stroke development – our swimmers have fun, gain confidence and learn to be safe. In 2018, we partnered with the Rockford Park District, City of Loves Park, OSF Healthcare and Harlem School District to provide swim lessons in Loves Park and meet a community need while Sand Park Pool was closed. That collaboration served 88 children.

We hired a full-time, year-round inclusion director who helps develop our staff and our programs to meet the needs of children. We were also able to send our team to the Power of Play conference to learn the latest inclusive practices. We started with Camp Winnebago and have been able to extend to our Kids’ Time after school program. Many kids with disabilities fear they will never Our goal is to build self-confidence in all children while make a friend. They may feel different and alone. also raising disability awareness in our community.

“This is our second year as a camp family. Our kids love it and get experiences my wife and I never did as children. The counselors are second-to-none and all the staff on-hand are responsive to parent feedback. I hope to be a part of the camp through my children for years to come. There is nowhere I’d rather have them for the summer, as they learn compassion for themselves and others, along with all the core values that will take them as far as they want to go in life. I’d recommend this to anyone with children, my son is autistic and has been included by staff and peers in all aspects of camp; that’s a rare thing anywhere. A piece of my heart will always be with Camp Winnebago and its fantastic staff.” Jakob, Camp Parent Isaiah’s Dad

Achievers

Kids’ Time

This program is for local high school students and provides career awareness, mentoring, weekly leadership meetings, recreational activities, volunteer opportunities, and college tours. Many of the students will become the first in their family to attend college. The program exposes students to a wide range of career opportunities while instilling selfesteem, self-respect, and character.

As the largest provider of before and after school programs in Winnebago County, we provide family-centered, valuesbased programs to nurture children’s healthy development. There are numerous benefits to a quality after school program including higher rates of success in school, increase in high school graduation rates and higher levels of cooperation with adults. The Y instills the five core values in the students and teaches them how to practice nonviolent conflict resolution. Children gain multiple caring adults in their lives who want to see them be successful.

That was a decision Stephen wanted to avoid at all costs It started seven years ago. Stephen was working because he knew the transformation he longed for would the night shift, not getting a lot of sleep and be so much easier if he had access to the Y. “I put my pride making unhealthy food choices. Healthy Living 101

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA

Healthy Living 101 is a six-week class that takes a holistic approach to wellness. The class covers goal setting, helpful apps and resources, nutrition, equipment orientation, group exercise options at the Y and more. This class is perfect for members who are ready to make a change in their lifestyle, but are unsure what steps to take. Several members report changes even after 6 weeks - with one being able to stop taking cholesterol medication. The class creates a sense of community among members who are seeking similar goals.

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a 12-week small group program designed to help adult cancer survivors achieve their holistic health goals. Participants work with Y staff, trained in supportive cancer care, to achieve their goals such as building muscle mass and strength, increasing flexibility and endurance, and improving confidence and self-esteem safely. By focusing on the whole person and not the disease, LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is helping people move beyond cancer in spirit, mind and body.

“The Y helped me maintain a balance in my life and find motivation. I was going for fitness and exercise – I didn’t realize I would meet friends. I could see different people going through the same thing as me.” You’ll find Stephen swimming laps, lifting weights, or running on the treadmill three to four days a week. On the other days he works out in his home gym. The Y is more than a place to exercise for Stephen, he is also a Jr. NBA coach for his son’s team. This role has helped him build even more relationships. “I’m fortunate to have good people in my life,” said Stephen. “The Y brings people who normally wouldn’t be together – together. I love being a part of this healthy network of people. In fact, I’m always sharing my story and encouraging others to join the movement.”

We have more than 100 different classes ranging from Les Mills, cycling and aqua fitness.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

When opportunity knocked - Kamrin Muhammad answered. When the Y offered her a role as an executive assistant in 2017 – she took it. Little did Kamrin know at the time, God was creating a pathway for her to achieve a lifelong dream of earning her college degree. Soon after Kamrin joined the Y, she enrolled in a leadership development program and advanced into a new position. She was working hard and gaining confidence. So, when opportunity knocked once more with the potential for a Judson University college scholarship – Kamrin took a leap of faith and applied. She was selected and was finally pursuing her dream that had been on hold for so long. “Twenty years ago, I thought I had my life all planned out, but was sadly mistaken as most children are. I thought that I was going to go

to my dream school Howard University, continue my education at a prestigious law school, and ultimately pursue a successful career as an attorney. Instead I attended the University of Iowa, discovered that I wasn’t very passionate about law, and ended up dropping out once I became pregnant at the age of 19.” Kamrin tried to go back to school after her son was born, but wasn’t confident that she could juggle being a fulltime student and single mother. Kamrin is a very driven individual and while she didn’t have her degree – that didn’t stop her from finding purpose. Kamrin is a mentor for KFACT (Keeping Families and Communities Together), a local non-profit program that offers a holistic mentoring approach to young, underprivileged women. Part of the mentoring prepares the students for college. Kamrin knew her impact on others would only be strengthened if she could get her own degree.

Togetherhood

Impact 505

Togetherhood is a program that brings together Y members from all backgrounds to work sideby-side with neighbors and partners to plan and implement volunteer projects that strengthen our community. 2018 initiatives included a Rake and Run, professional clothing drive, and Easter basket for kids project.

Impact 505 is an initiative to activate teens, provide belonging and mentorship, and encourage the discovery of purpose. Impact 505 members earn service-based memberships to the YMCA. The Goal of Impact 505 is for teens to play an active role in impacting the community and for community members to offer guidance and support that impacts the lives of our youth. When Judson University moved in to the YMCA in 2017, both organizations saw an opportunity to increase access to education. “The pursuit of education is important,” said Dr. Susan Wesner, Associate Professor, Judson University (pictured at right with Kamrin). “One of the goals in the Division of Professional Studies is to remove barriers to education. Recognizing that finances can cause individuals to delay their pursuit, Judson feels it is important to offer a scholarship opportunity to a local student who is engaged within the community.” A new individual is awarded the scholarship each year. Kamrin said school has been challenging and rewarding. She says, with a smile, that her son, now 13, is keeping her on top of her homework. Kamrin will graduate in the Fall of 2020 with a Bachelor’s of Human Services. She has already added a new goal of earning a master’s degree in social work or counseling.

Veteran Programs

Spiritual Development

The YMCA salutes our country’s active duty military personnel and veterans. We offer several programs to promote and enhance the health and wellbeing of military members and their families. We offer discounted rates on membership and programs. Our nation’s veterans, and their families, have dedicated so much in service to our country. The Y is honored to have the opportunity to show our appreciation.

The foundation of the YMCA is our Christian mission. Ensuring members of our community experience the love of God, and others, matters to us. We offer a variety of ways for individuals to further their spiritual development. We offer bible studies, classes in partnership with local churches, weekly times for prayer, chaplains’ program, spiritual leadership training for staff, partnership with Youth for Christ serving 50 teens and a part-time spiritual development director to further our outreach efforts.

A MESSAGE OF THANKS Dear Donors and Friends: Last year I promised that we would be out and about meeting you and hearing all the reasons you are donors to the mission of the Y. Thanks to all of you for spending time telling us your stories and sharing your inspiration for giving. What I heard more than anything else is that the Y helped to make you or someone you care about the people you are – the Y helped to build you and your family. When generous and dedicated donors invest in our mission and make the Y available to all, we are able to open our doors to everyone who can benefit from the friendships and community that we build together. Your combined gifts of $1.1 million in annual support and $1.3 million in capital, build the programs, buildings and skills of the people who make community possible at the Y. Thank you, Michelle Gorham, CFRE Chief Advancement Officer
