Social Responsibility
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Giving back and supporting those in need. Building a better community one person at a time!
COMMUNITY
OUTREACH
Meeting youth where they are in life and putting them on a path toward a brighter future is the focus of our community outreach programming at the YMCA. Youth in the Rockford area are supported and guided during their developmental years within many of the programs offered.
ACHIEVERS
GIRL SCOUTS
Achievers inspires students to excel by effectively linking them to professionals to improve academic performance and broaden career options. This program focuses on preparing first generation college students for college. Weekly program sessions help students through the college selection, application, and acceptance process. Volunteers mentor students throughout this process and assist them through their first year in college. Achievers is designed for all high school students.
Troop #2288 meets weekly at the SwedishAmerican Y. This troop is designed for girls in middle and high school. The troop is led by Rockford Service Corps members who are Girl Scout certified. The young ladies engage in leadership opportunities and service projects. They earn badges and National recognition. The young ladies will also develop a business plan to market and distribute girl scout cookies. Most events, activities and badges are either free or low cost.. The young ladies also have the opportunity to attend at least 2 events sponsored by Girl Scouts and AmeriCorp.

ROCKFORD SERVICE CORPS
Togetherhood is a YMCA initiative that invites Y members to activate their social responsibility by participating in the Y’s cause to strengthen community. This initiative provides Y members with fun, convenient and rewarding ways to give back and support their neighbors through member– generated service projects and other charitable endeavors. Togetherhood serves to bring the Y back to its roots as a volunteer–powered association of people who wish to make a difference. We are currently seeking Y members who wish to serve their community. We have a variety of ways to get involved in the Togetherhood initiative, and we strongly encourage our members to learn more. Check out all the various volunteer opportunities we have at www.rockriverymca.org/volunteers.
Call 779-500-0800 or email togetherhood@rockriverymca.org to volunteer or receive more information regarding Togetherhood.

The program is offered at Hillman Elementary School and Washington Elementary School and serves students in first-fifth grade Monday through Friday from 2:10-5:15. Our West Middle School location serves students in sixth-eighth grade Monday through Friday from 3:30-5:45.. The Twenty-First Century After School Program offers a wide range of programming from tutoring, STEM, boy’s group, active games, visual arts, music, field trips and family engagement. Students are enrolled in the program based on principal, teacher and/or counselor recommendation. Enrollment forms will be available at all three schools starting on August 6.
Do you want to make an impact and get things done in your community? AmeriCorps programs do more than move communities forward; they serve their members by creating jobs and providing pathways to opportunity for young people entering the workforce. AmeriCorps places thousands of young adults into intensive service positions where they learn valuable work skills, earn money for education, and develop an appreciation for citizenship. The Y is currently seeking community members to become part of our AmeriCorps service program. Individuals work with a diverse group of children and teens through various types of service work, such as mentorship, community service projects and many others. AmeriCorps members will work on a part–time basis for a one year service term and some will receive a monthly living stipend and all will receive an educational award to be used for future or current educational costs upon the completion of service. This is a great way for students and recent grads to gain new skills and professional experience, serve their community and build their resumes. What do we offer for the youth? SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT PRAYER BOX
PRAYER GATHERING
We invite you to share your concerns with us so we can support you in prayer. We have placed a box in the lobby at the Northeast Family YMCA, one in the Puri Family YMCA lobby, and one just off the lobby on the way to the main gym at the SwedishAmerican Riverfront YMCA. There you can anonymously drop off any prayer requests you might have. There is no limit to how many requests you may make. A team of pray-ers, including the Y chaplains will pray regularly over these requests. Strict confidentiality will be adhered to.
There is a time for community prayer every Wednesday morning from 7am-8:30am at the Log Lodge of the SwedishAmerican Riverfront YMCA. All are welcome. It is a drop in event, so come for as long or as short as you like. From June through August we move the prayer time to Anderson Gardens to accommodate other use of the Lodge.
CHAPLAIN TEAM We now have a growing team of volunteer chaplains to serve you, available to any Y member, staff, or guest. If you have something on your mind, need prayer, or just want someone to talk to, let us know. Our chaplains are mostly local pastors, or people engaged in ministry in the community. If you have a need, we will connect you to one of the team. We are also willing to volunteer to help in any area of need that we can.
To get information about what is available, to suggest an idea, or to share a concern or prayer request, contact: Gary Schwerin, Spiritual Development Minister, at 815.985.8796 or gschwerin@rockriverymca.org or visit www.rockriverymca.org.
6
DEVOTIONS We send out a weekly, brief devotion to all staff, and offer it to anyone else who wants it. Just contact Gary to be added to the email list.
PARTNERSHIPS We realize that we cannot accomplish all we hope to in the area of Christian spiritual development by ourselves. That is why we are always seeking to build partnerships with congregations, ministries, and individuals who share our passion and heart for this. For example, Campus Life meets in the SwedishAmerican Y facility, and Crossroads Kids Clubs partner with our after school programs in several locations. We desire to make our facilities available to you and your congregation or ministry if you have a class or outreach or ministry that would be well served by being in the Y. Contact us with your ideas.

ACTIVE OLDER ADULTS SILVERSNEAKERS® CLASSIC
RETIRED MEN’S CLUB
Have fun and move to the music through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of movement, and activity for daily living skills. Hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles, and a ball are offered for resistance, and a chair is used for seated and/or standing support. Class is open to the first 30 SilverSneaker members, and if open chairs are available, the class is open to all YMCA members.
Meets every Tuesday at 1:00 pm in the Log Lodge. The chorus is also a longtime component of the club. Bowling, billiards, and card games are activities regularly enjoyed by members. The club has regular chartered bus trips to casinos and baseball games throughout the year. For over 40 years the Retired Men’s Club has generously donated the proceeds from its holiday sale of trees and wreaths to YMCA youth programs. Give this long-established and respected service group a try! Email Kim Lape for more information at klape@rockriverymca.org.
