There are so many great reasons to join the Y, including: FREE Group Exercise Classes With your membership, you can choose from hundreds of exercise classes for beginners up to the fitness enthusiast. Our Ys offer traditional aerobics, yoga, pilates, cycle and many other group exercise classes, including ZUMBA® and BODYPUMP™, all taught in a fun, welcoming environment. In addition to the group exercise classes, our trained wellness staff can help design a fitness program that meets your individual needs.

Family Friendly Programs Family fun doesn’t have to break the bank. Join us for free play time in our XRKade, on our inflatable obstacle courses and in our family-friendly pool. Members also receive discounts on Magic Place afterschool care, day camp, sports and other programs for children and families.

Strength and Cardio Equipment Each Y has a variety of strength and cardio equipment for members. Whether you prefer running on a treadmill, cycling beside a friend, reading while on an elliptical trainer, lifting free weights or using strength training equipment, you can do it at the YMCA.

Quality Child Care We provide quality child care in our Child Watch while you’re working out or participating in other Y activities for up to two hours per day. If you’re looking for longer afterschool care, we offer that too. Check out the Y’s Magic Place for elementary afterschool care and Y Pass for afterschool care for Andrew Lewis middle schoolers.

Swimming and Water Activities All of our facilities have year-round indoor pools that offer recreational swim and water aerobic activities. Certified lifeguards staff our pools, and our swim lessons are taught by trained instructors.

When you join the YMCA of Roanoke Valley, you have access to our three Roanoke Valley branches AND full use of regional YMCA facilities in Bedford, Franklin County, and Smith Mountain Lake. Your membership also enrolls you in the YMCA’s A.W.A.Y. program, meaning you are Always Welcome At YMCAs! Present your member ID card at YMCAs outside our association while traveling to reap the rewards. If you are planning a trip, we’ll gladly call ahead to confirm guest policies in that area.

Child Watch Child Watch provides supervision and activities for YMCA members’ children from 6-weeks to 6-years-old so that they may participate in other Y activities. EDUCATION & LEADERSHIP

Knowledge, character development, guidance and encouragement to help youth develop and realize their potential. LEADERS’ CLUB - Teens Only Ages 13-18 The YMCA Leaders’ Club provides high schoolers with knowledge, training, communication skills and valuable teambuilding experience through volunteering in YMCA programs and in the community. The Leaders’ Club program will train teens in physical education and service learning to better serve our community and the YMCA as they encourage each other to make a positive impact for present and future generations. A leader must possess strong character, a positive attitude, meet basic physical requirements and maintain a 3.0 GPA throughout the school year. Leaders’ Club is a school-year-long commitment that meets weekly. Interested candidates may apply to the club starting in August. Program fees are payable upon acceptance into the program. afterschool fun for middleschoolers new! Y-PASS Middle school students think Y-Pass is fun, and parents know the Y offers a safe and nurturing place to socialize, get homework help and participate in group activities after the school day ends. A YMCA bus picks up students from school and brings them to the Y so they can be active, socialize with peers, and get the mentoring that helps them grow into responsible teens and adults. There’s something for every kid at the Y. Our programs emphasize values, sportsmanship, friendship and most of all, fun!

SWIM At the Y, we know that swimming is a life skill as much as it is a great exercise and a challenging sport. That’s why we offer swim lessons for children ages 6 months and up, family swim time, competitive swimming and many kinds of adaptive swim programs for kids with special needs.

Private/semi-private LESSONS

Ages 3-adult We offer private lessons to anyone who needs a little extra attention in the water. Private lessons (one-on-one) or semi-private lessons (two or more swimmers) with a YMCA certified instructor can help you accomplish your goals--from getting acclimated in the water to perfecting your stroke and technique. Thirty-minute lessons are offered in 4, 6 or 8-class packages and are based on instructor availability. For more information, contact Keith Gaines at (540) 342-9622.

PARENT/CHILD Parents and young swimmers, ages 6 months-3 years can come and enjoy the water together! The Parent/ChildSKIP program teaches water enrichment and aquatic readiness activities. The child will become aware of his or her movement through the water while the parent(s) learn the tools to keep their child safe in and around the water.

POLLIWOG: This class is for the non-swimmer or beginner swimmer. Children will learn water safety, develop swim strokes and adjust to the water.

MINNOW: For advanced beginning swimmers who can front/back float 1 minute, tread water 20 seconds without flotation, front/back alternating and symmetrical paddle 15 yards without flotation.

FLYING FISH: For advanced swimmers who have completed the Fish level, which includes 50 yards of continuous freestyle and backstroke, elementary backstroke, breaststroke and sidestrokes.

GUPPY: For beginning swimmers who can submerge head under water, front/back paddle 5 yards without flotation.

FISH: For advanced swimmers who can tread water 1 minute without flotation, freestyle/backstroke/breaststroke/ elementary backstroke/sidestroke 25 yards with effective kicks and breathing.

SHARK: This class is for the swimmer who has advanced from Flying Fish or who can swim four lengths of front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, sidestroke and elementary backstroke and butterfly.

KIRK FAMILY ymca–YOUTH DEVELOPMENT SPORTS & FITNESS junior hoops BASKETBALL Ages 4-6 The YMCA knows basketball--in fact, we invented it! We help kids become better players and better people. Our basketball program is progressive with multiple age levels. We make sure that every child gets to play and that games are safe, fair and most of all, fun! Register by Oct. 25. Oct 27- Dec 8 Sat 9:00-11:00am M: $60 / NM: $80 YOUTH BASKETBALL LEAGUE Grades 2-5 The Youth Basketball League is where kids learn character through competition. Young players get to play in a competitive environment with other league teams outside the Y while focusing on good sportsmanship and skills that will prepare them for the next level of competition. Fencing Ages 6+ Each12-week session concludes in a December exhibition. Fencing is great exercise, safe and FUN. YOUTH KARATE Ages 8-12 Learn the basic of marital arts, focusing on respect for self and others. Instructors work with children to teach age-appropriate self-defense techniques and improve their listening skills and self-discipline. Adult Karate is also available. There’s something for every kid at the Y. Our programs emphasize values, sportsmanship, friendship and most of all, fun!

SWIM At the Y, we know that swimming is a life skill as much as it is a great exercise and a challenging sport. That’s why we offer swim lessons for children ages 6 months and up, family swim time, competitive swimming and many kinds of adaptive swim programs for kids with special needs.

WATER AEROBICS: ALWAYS FREE TO MEMBERS At the Y, we believe if you can do it on land, you can do some version of it in the water! The low-impact water environment allows participants to improve cardiovascular and strength conditioning while protecting joints and promoting joint flexibility. Whether you can swim or not, most classes are suitable for everyone. Check our schedules posted at our pools or download them online at ymcaroanoke.org. Shallow Water Aerobic Exercise This class is for all levels for physical fitness and is conducted in water between 4-5 feet deep. Swimmers and non-swimmers can benefit from and enjoy this aerobic exercise class. Deep Water Aerobic Exercise A class for those with moderate to higher levels of physical fitness who have the swim skills necessary for safety, proper body alignment and exercise performance in deep water. Aqua Zumba Ditch the work out and join the party in the water! This shallow water aerobic class is a great and fun way to get your cardio work out in. Arthritis Foundation Aquatic ProgramS Step into the warm-water pool for this gentle way to exercise joints and muscles, which helps increase the range of motion and alleviate pain and stiffness associated with arthritis and other related diseases.
