2016 ANNUAL REPORT YMCA OF SNOHOMISH COUNTY
DEAR FRIENDS Our cause is a simple one: to strengthen the foundations of community. We’ve been doing just that in Snohomish County since 1901. We live our cause by focusing on youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. We are proud to tackle new challenges, and to make new connections in order to build and strengthen the community. In 2016, the YMCA had another outstanding year of providing vital human services to the residents of Snohomish County. Our Y advanced a number of strategic initiatives that strengthen both current operations and the long-term vision for expanding our impact in new and existing communities.
DR. GARY COHN Chair, Board of Trustees
In March, we concluded our most successful annual campaign ever, raising more than $1.4 million to support youth and families in our community. On September 3 we cut the ribbon for the grand opening of our new Stanwood-Camano YMCA, a vision that was six years in the making. This new YMCA is an important resource and will change the lives of thousands of youth, teens, adults, and seniors in that community. This past year our YMCA also led the creation of the Casino Road Academy coalition, a formal partnership among Edmonds Community College, Seattle Goodwill, and the Y, which acts as the only adult education center dedicated to serving the Casino Road/South Everett SCOTT WASHBURN population. Our YMCA Casino President & CEO Road Youth Development Center also changed its name to the Casino Road Community Center, since the outreach work at that center went beyond youth, to also serving many families in the community. Our Y is a powerful association of diverse people committed to bringing about lasting personal and social change. We extend our sincere thanks to our donors, boards of directors, volunteers, and staff who help us nurture the potential of every child, youth, and adult and give everyone the opportunity to learn and grow. Now, more than ever, the work of the Y is critical for communities to thrive. We hope that when you think of your YMCA, you’ll know that it’s more than just a gym - it’s a cause. A cause that continues to strengthen the community in which you live.

During 2016, $2,475,794 was provided in direct financial assistance to 10,446 individuals. In addition, through the generosity of our donors, United Way, members, and specific program grants, we were able to provide subsidized programs and services to thousands of kids, youth, and families who would not otherwise be able to participate, thus extending opportunities and increasing access to YMCA asset-building programs in extraordinary ways.
MY Y STORY Learning in many ways Ricarda first learned about the YMCA through taking GED and English classes on Casino Road. The Y’s free child care allows her to focus on improving her English, reading, and math skills. Through advancing her own education, Ricarda wants to achieve more in her new country and be able to help her kids with homework. There’s something else she wants for her kids: to learn to swim. Growing up in Mexico, Ricarda never learned to swim. This wasn’t a problem until she had her children. “Last summer we went to the lake, and Angie liked to play in the water, but I wouldn’t let her swim,” said Ricarda. With support from the Y’s Annual Campaign, Ricarda and her family are now YMCA members and visit regularly. Her daughters are now taking swim lessons. And, Ricarda is planning on taking lessons, too, so she can keep up with them. “The Y has done a lot for me,” said Ricarda.
