STRENGTHENING COMMUNITY CASINO ROAD COMMUNITY CENTER STAKEHOLDER UPDATE

AUGUST 2016

MY Y STORY: RICARDA LEARNING TOGETHER Ricarda first learned about the YMCA through taking GED and English classes at the Y’s Casino Road Community Center. The Y’s free child care allows her to focus on improving her English, reading, and math skills. Through advancing her own education, Ricarda wants to achieve more in her new country and be able to help her kids with homework. There’s something else she wants for her kids: to learn to swim. Growing up in Mexico, Ricarda never learned to swim. This wasn’t a problem until she had her children. “Last summer we went to the lake, and Angie liked to play in the water, but I wouldn’t let her swim,” said Ricarda

With support from the Y’s Annual Campaign, Ricarda and her family are now YMCA members and visit regularly. Her daughters are now taking swim lessons. And, Ricarda taking lessons, too, so she can keep up with them. “The Y has done a lot for me,” said Ricarda.

CRYDC CHANGES NAME TO CASINO ROAD COMMUNITY CENTER Something remarkable happened in the five years since we opened the Casino Road Youth Development Center: We became a place where families come to learn, grow, and have fun. After our initial year of serving 6-18 year olds through our drop-in Youth Center, we quickly learned that, to serve youth, we needed to serve their entire families. We began running English as a Second Language Classes (ESOL), and formed a partnership with Seattle Goodwill. For the past three years, Goodwill and the Y have served more than 100 different new immigrants looking to improve their English, and for the past year we’ve run a Play & Learn Group for parents. In addition, through our dedicated volunteers, Miriam and Jose Vargas, we’ve offered Spanish-language GED classes for over a year, with many students achieving their GEDs. Last spring, our Y formed a new partnership with Edmonds Community College (EdCC), who will offer upper level and Family Life ESOL classes. Together, Goodwill, EdCC, and the Y will serve more than 300 different adult students in 2016. Because we’ve truly become a place where all people can work to achieve their highest potential, our Board of Directors, the Casino Road Advisory Group, and Embajadores de la YMCA volunteers determined that it was time for a new, more accurate name. From now on, we’ll be known as the Casino Road Community Center. With your help, we’ll serve many more kids, teens, adults, and families in the future.

GED Instructors Miriam and Jose Vargas and Y Volunteer Marta Dolce celebrate with our recent graduates.

CALL FOR SUPPORT We need your help! The CRCC is looking for volunteers to provide child care during English Language and GED classes, mentor youth through MAP or Casino Road Scholars, and give donations of meals, board games, books, and arts and crafts supplies. To donate your time or items, contact CRCC Director Alex Costumbrado at acostumbrado@ymca-snoco.org or 425 493 2435. We are also looking for volunteers to oversee, guide and support our work. MAP gave me the opportunity to learn more myself that’s not about school learning. I’d like to get a job and many of my friends have jobs with the YMCA.
