A Message From The Endowment Committee Chair Dear Heritage Club Friends: It is hard to believe that it’s already spring! With the new season comes new opportunities to learn, grow, and give back to our everchanging Snohomish County community!
Herb Fox
It has been almost four months since the Heritage Club dinner and the distribution of our previous IMPACT newsletter. During those long winter months, good things have continued to happen at our YMCA. • The new Stanwood-Camano Y, which opened on September 3, continues to grow and respond to community needs. • The effort to build a new Everett YMCA continues to gain investors and advocates and is on target for a 2018 ground breaking and 2019 grand opening! • In March we exceeded our 2017 Annual Campaign goal by raising more than $1,550,000 from thousands of donors across the county. Thanks to all of you who have played a role in these efforts through personal gifts of support and advocacy. The Endowment Committee is working in concert with YMCA administration and our branch executives to develop materials aimed at increasing the awareness and understanding of the benefits of Heritage Club membership. As we increase the number of staff, Board Members, and volunteer ambassadors who better understand the benefits of a growing endowment fund, those folks will be better prepared to visit with and attract an increasing number of Heritage Club members. Through better marketing and education, we can expand the message that by joining the Heritage Club, friends of the Y can leave a legacy that will support the Y and have a lasting impact on their community. Additionally, we find that people are attracted by the prospect that joining the Heritage Club does not require an immediate cash contribution, but rather only a pledge to leave some portion of one’s estate upon their passing and pledges can be directed to benefit a local branch and/ or even a specific cause. We are particularly proud that all of our Endowment Committee members and a great many of our YMCA administration and branch executives are Heritage Club members. The point being that once people better understand what the endowment can provide for future generations, electing to give back by joining the Heritage Club is a relatively easy decision to make and be particularly proud of. IMPACTING TOMORROW TOGETHER The YMCA movement lasts. It is stable, values-based, professionally managed, in touch with current needs, and capable of meeting the changing conditions of the future. Many friends of the Y choose to extend their influence through the Y beyond their own lifetimes by sharing some of the assets they have accumulated through making gifts to the Y’s permanent endowment fund. THE YMCA HERITAGE CLUB Members of the YMCA Heritage Club are individuals and families who have made designated gifts to the YMCA of Snohomish County Endowment Fund, ensuring the Y’s ability to be a positive force in the community for years to come. Heritage Club members share a common desire to build a strong future through the work of the Y. OUR PURPOSE The Heritage Club encourages thoughtful gifts from donors as a primary means of building a strong endowment fund capable of providing financial support to the Y’s mission in perpetuity. Currently there are 163 families and individuals who are members of the YMCA Heritage Club. In 2016 the Endowment Fund was valued at $3,900,000 with annual distributions totaling $136,000. The allocations are disbursed to each of our six branch locations and Big Brothers Big Sisters affiliate to help ensure that critical programs and services are provided. Heritage Club members have made an immediate or planned gift to the YMCA’s endowment fund in one of the following ways: • • • • • •
An outright gift of cash or other tangible assets Bequests Charitable gift annuity Charitable trust Retirement asset Life Insurance proceeds

WHY I
GIVE KELLY SHEPHERD I chose to support the YMCA Endowment Fund because of the ability to have an impact in our community for many years to come. The Endowment Fund provides an opportunity to continue to be a positive influence in our community for my lifetime and beyond. I want to ensure that future generations have the opportunity to be part of the YMCA. I believe in the work that is being done and the lives being changed. The Y is so much more than a gym. It is a community and a family that is accepting and welcoming to all. We all unite for a better self, a better us, and a better community. My hope for the Endowment Fund is to provide resources that allow the organization to continue to provide missiondriven opportunities based on community need that positively impact individuals, families, and our community.

HOW TO BECOME A HERITAGE CLUB MEMBER
ENDOWMENT INVESTMENT EXAMPLES Sam and Sophia are in their 30s and have two small children which is helping them think of their family’s future in new ways. While they aren’t wealthy, they do make a point of giving what they can to the YMCA Annual Campaign each year. This year, in addition to their $1,000 Annual gift, they feel ready to give $5,000 to the Y’s Endowment Fund. If this couple makes no future gifts to the Endowment Fund, assuming 4% interest compounded monthly, by the time the couple in is their 70s they will have provided the Y nearly $20,000 in interest earned and the value of their original gift will be nearly $25,000. Watch for future issues of IMPACT for more examples of how to become a Heritage Club member.
