SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE WINTER PROGRAM GUIDE FALL PROGRAM GUIDE JANUARY-MARCH September-December EVERETT FAMILY FAMILY YMCA YMCA EVERETT

Welcome to the YMCA! For over 116 years, your Everett Family YMCA has greeted children and families in the Fall with quality youth enriching experiences. We invite you to explore our preschool programs that prepare children for early learning and kindergarten readiness, our licensed school age child care programs offering convenience and peace of mind, or our free teen programs that provide our youth the opportunity to give back and serve their community. We also encourage you to try our myriad of wellness programs designed to provide new-found energy and strength. Your YMCA has something for everyone. On October 15, we encourage you to join YMCA supporters at the Annual Bright Futures Benefit Auction with proceeds benefiting YMCA youth programs. In the 29 years of this event, over $1 million has been raised for the Everett Family YMCA. We hope you can join us for a great evening. At the YMCA, you can become engaged and involved in a community that has served the greater Everett area for well over a century. Welcome to the Everett Family YMCA; for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Ted Wenta Senior Vice President of Operations

HEALTHY LIVING YMCA’S DIABETES PREVENTION PROGRAM

WHAT IS PREDIABETES?

If you are at high risk for type 2 diabetes, the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program can help you adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles that will help you reduce your chances of developing diabetes.

Prediabetes is a condition in which individuals have blood glucose levels that are higher than normal, but not high enough to be classified as diabetes. People with prediabetes are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.

The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program helps those at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles by eating healthier, increasing physical activity and losing a modest amount of weight in order to reduce their chances of developing the disease.

An estimated one in three U.S. adults has prediabetes, yet just 11% of those with prediabetes know they have it. Prediabetes increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

Research by the National Institutes of Health has proven that programs like the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program can reduce the number of cases of type 2 diabetes by 58%. PROGRAM GOALS:

Reduce body weight by 7%

Increase physical activity to 150 minutes per week

DETAILS: In a classroom setting, a trained lifestyle coach will facilitate a small group of participants in learning about healthier eating, physical activity, and other behavior changes. The year-long program consists of 25 sessions over the course of one year. WHO CAN PARTICIPATE? In order to qualify for the program, you must be at least18 years old, overweight (BMI > 25)* and at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes indicated by a confirmatory blood value†, prediabetes determined by clinical diagnosis of Gestational Diabetes (GDM) during previous pregnancy, or a qualifying risk score. (see qualifications at right…similar to the rack card or the quiz page in the brochure) TO SEE IF YOU QUALIFY, AND TO ENROLL, CONTACT: Andrea Weiler 360 453 2190

*Asian individual (s) BMI > 22 †Individuals who have already

been diagnosed with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes do not qualify for this program.

Risk for developing type 2 diabetes may be reduced or eliminated by weight loss, healthier eating, and increased physical activity. Visit our website today to take a quiz to learn if you are at risk for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. Visit ymca-snoco.org/ prevent diabetes.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Giving back and supporting our neighbors is part of what makes the Y the Y. We are a community and we lend a hand where we can. FOR A BETTER US Every day, the YMCA of Snohomish County gives our community the support it needs to learn, grow, and thrive. From advocacy to food security, disease prevention to athletics, football to dance classes, everything we do helps strengthen our neighborhood and the people who live here. But keeping our neighborhoods great is a full-time job. Every day, our community faces new challenges that create a greater need for the work we do. And we need your help to do it. Your gift can help Snohomish County and everyone in it shine. For a better you. For a better community. The Y.™ For a better us.™ Learn more at ymca-snoco.org/ForABetterUs

EVERETT FAMILY YMCA | FALL 2016

VOLUNTEERISM & GIVING VOLUNTEER, DONATE, ADVOCATE Our movement is made up of people of all ages and from every walk of life, all working side-by-side to ensure that everyone, regardless of gender, income, or background, has the opportunity to live life to the fullest. Financial assistance keeps the Y available for kids and families who need us most. We count on the generosity of our members and community to help people of all ages and from all walks of life be more healthy, confident, connected, and secure. When you give to the Y, your gift will have a meaningful, enduring impact right in your own neighborhood. The Y’s Financial Assistance Program is supported by contributions to our Annual Campaign and United Way. And finally, the Y could not survive without the dedication of our volunteers. From youth tutors to committee members, teen mentors to fundraisers, board members to fitness instructors, volunteers lend their time, talents, and energy to help strengthen our community. VOLUNTEERS OF THE Y • Join our Boards of Directors or branch committees. • Raise funds to ensure the Y is accessible to all members of the community through Annual Campaign. • Motivate and support youth through coaching our sports teams and teaching many of our classes. • Extend a hand to help adults who want to do more, be more or live healthier through healthy living programs. If you would like to donate some of your time please pick up a volunteer application. Volunteer opportunities and application can be found on our website at ymca-snoco.org—just click on our Social Responsibility link at the top of the page. Contact Liane Ha’i, Volunteer Coordinator, at 425 374 5742 or lhai@ymca-snoco.org. MEMBER ADVISORY TEAM We want to hear from you! What programs and events do you want to see at the Everett Family YMCA? We are looking for members to share their input to improve service, value, and engagement at your YMCA. We will also be discovering new ways to improve your experience and ways to better connect with our own Everett Community. Contact Gael Gebow at ggebow@ymca-snoco.org to join the team! ENGLISH FOR SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES (ESOL) CLASS The YMCA is partnering with the Seattle Goodwill to offer eight weeks of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). Goodwill’s class will build confidence in everyday situations, improve consumer skills, and prepare students for employment or educational programs. Free child care (ages one year and up) is provided. Class sizes will be kept small with no more than 16 participants to a class. Although there is no cost to attend, there are a few requirements, including regular attendance. Visit ymca-snoco.org/esol for specific locations and times.
