MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Chris Bellecourt, Sports & Recreation Director cbellecourt@ymca-snoco.org 425 357 3022
Thank you for choosing to be a part of the Mill Creek YMCA. What brings hundreds of people through our doors each day?
Malaika Brown, Director of Family Engagement & Impact mbrown@ymca-snoco.org 425 224 8041
Our members tell us as if it's second nature. To them, the YMCA is about total wellness - enhancing spiritual, mental, and physical health. Members also tell us that one of the most important reasons they come to the Mill Creek YMCA is for the quality time it allows them to spend with their family. In our busy lives, family time is often the hardest to schedule, but it’s also one of the most important aspects of our children’s development. The YMCA is the place where someone new can immediately become a part of community life. Many praise the Y for its inclusive approach to people facing physical or mental challenges or financial difficulties. Most important, the YMCA is responding to critical challenges facing our community, including constructive after-school programs for tweens and teens, youth obesity, affordable childcare and summer camps or life-saving skills such as swim instruction for kids and adults. It all comes together in a way that sets the Mill Creek YMCA apart from other not-for-profit community organizations: The YMCA fuses programs, exercise, learning, self-esteem, confidence, knowledge, and camaraderie to build people one step at a time. The end result is a stronger individual, a strengthened family - and, ultimately, a stronger community Thank you for making the Mill Creek YMCA a part of your life! We look forward to serving you and your family throughout 2017.
Sincerely,
Kyla Smith, Branch Executive Director

SWIM, SPORTS & PLAY SPORTS LEAGUES The Y is the starting point for many youth to learn about becoming and staying active, and developing healthy habits they’ll carry with them throughout their lives. Plus, the benefits are far greater than just physical health. Whether it’s gaining the confidence that comes from learning a new skill or building the positive relationships that lead to good sportsmanship and teamwork, participating in sports at the Y is about building the whole child, from the inside out. The YMCA approach to Youth Sports is different from many leagues. We focus on the four YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. Every child gets equal playing time and we encourage fair play, positive competition, and family involvement. Our goal is to enable each player to excel in that other game we’re all familiar with: the game of life. All sports and divisions are co-ed. SPRING YOUTH BASKETBALL Grades K-6 The YMCA offers an instructional spring basketball program that emphasizes fundamental skills such as passing, dribbling, defense and participation. WHERE DID ALL THE FISH GO? CHANGES TO Y SWIM LESSONS As “America’s Swim Instructor,” the Y has been teaching kids how to be safe around water for decades. Beginning with our Spring II session, we’ll be making some changes to our swim lesson structure to simplify and more accurately describe skill levels.
WHAT IS DIFFERENT? We’re making two key changes to swim lessons: Name changes: Lesson names are changing to stages that better reflect the skills learned, and we’re moving away from the identifying fish levels. Visit your local Y for more information and a detailed guide on which stage is appropriate for your children. When registering for upcoming sessions, these changes will be reflected both on the website and if signing up at your local branch. Curriculum changes: We’re also changing the curriculum to better serve different learning styles of our youth participants. We’ve simplified the structure by focusing on benchmark skills and goals in each stage. Students progress from fundamentals to stroke technique over six distinct stages. Swimming lessons are essential for kids to become safe around water, and learn to set and achieve goals. We’re looking forward to launching this new swim lesson structure and helping many more young people build swimming confidence.
