MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Thank you for choosing the Mill Creek YMCA. Spring is a wonderful time to check out everything we have to offer. Join one of our popular Group Exercise classes like Strength Train Together, Yoga Flow, or Zumba. Sign up your child for Spring Basketball, Outdoor Soccer, or Flag Football. Drop off your tweens at our Youth Development Center or connect them with our Tuesday night Y Writers. We are at our best when we’re creating connections and fostering friendships. At the same time, we’re also responding to critical challenges facing our community, including providing positive afterschool programs for tweens and teens, combating youth obesity, offering affordable childcare and summer camps, and building life-saving skills through swim instruction for kids and adults. It all comes together in a way that sets the Mill Creek YMCA apart from other not-for-profit community organizations. The YMCA focuses on achievement, relationships, and belonging to build people one step at a time. Thank you for making the Mill Creek YMCA a part of your life! We look forward to serving you and your family throughout 2020. Sharon Crosby Branch Executive Director

SCHOOL AGE CARE SCHOOL AGE CARE BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL
OUR STAFF
When school’s out, you can trust the Y to provide an engaging experience for your child right at school. Y School Age programs give your child the opportunity to get to know some of their classmates better as they engage in active play and collaborate on fun projects. In the process, they’ll continue to develop the physical, educational, emotional, and social skills that are essential for success. Our School Age programs serve children enrolled in Mill Creek, Bothell, Southeast Everett and Southwest Snohomish area elementary schools during their out-of-school times from 6:30 am-6:30 pm. On-site programs are located at the following schools: Cedar Wood Penny Creek
Forest View Totem Falls
Little Cedars Tambark Creek
Silver Firs
These programs are also accessible to students enrolled in the following schools via transportation provided daily: Mill Creek James Monroe Jefferson Seattle Hill Silver Lake Woodside
OUR PROGRAMS Children are like sponges - they watch and absorb knowledge, skills and values from everything and everyone around them. At the Y, we believe the values and skills learned early on are vital building blocks for quality of life and future success. At the Y, school-age kids make friends, learn new skills and do homework. Most importantly, children learn how to be their best selves. Specific activities are different for each location and age group, but all locations feature:
Academic support from caring role models Physical activity and movement Free-Choice/Open Centers Healthy Snack Group Time 30-minute Outdoor Time; weather permitting Projects and Activities in Arts, STEM, Literacy, and Cooking Service learning opportunities
We support school efforts in learning by bridging the gap between school and back. The Y provides hands on experiential activities for kids to learn in different ways. Our School Age Care staff strive to create ways for every child to learn and grow.
Our School Age programs are staffed with people who understand the cognitive, physical and social development of kids; the need children have to feel connected and supported in trying new things; and the caring and reinforcement parents and families need to help each other. Each School Age location has a dedicated Site Coordinator, with a minimum of 30 college credits in early childhood or elementary education. Staff have attended, and continue to attend, regularly scheduled training events on Positive Behavior Guidance, Reframing Conflict, Active Learning, Building Community and Homework Help. Staff maintain current certification in CPR, First Aid, Child Abuse Prevention, and other certification required by the licensor. In addition, staff and volunteers are thoroughly screened prior to employment and evaluated on a regular basis to ensure continually high performance.

Volunteer Marilyn Garafano and her husband, Mike, in Greece.
SPRING 2020 | MILL CREEK FAMILY YMCA
Marilyn Garofano has been a volunteer at the Y for several years. She has been a tremendous amount of help and an asset to many of our Active Older Adult committees. She works many hours on the Newsletter committee contributing articles, as well as helping with design and layout. Marilyn serves on the Events and Trips and Travels committee too. She keeps meticulous notes for each event and pictures of past decorations for future planning. She has undertaken the responsibility of managing all our wonderful volunteers that help with logistics and decorations at many of our events. In the past she has helped in the family department teaching kids to knit and crochet and more. She has a can-do attitude and jumps on board in helping our Volunteer Coordinator with other tasks and needs outside of the senior department. Her energy and willingness to help is much appreciated. When she isn’t here at the Y, she enjoys camping, hiking, quilting, traveling, and spending time with her family. Marilyn retired from teaching and moved from Spokane to Mill Creek to be closer to her family. Thank you, Marilyn! We can’t do what we do without our wonderful volunteers!
