My Y Story: Alex Alex had been morbidly obese for more than 20 years and wore a size 3X. She had tried many weight loss programs, but nothing worked. Knowing she was at risk for diabetes, Alex joined the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program. The program gave her the necessary tools and support to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Since it was a gradual change, she never felt overwhelmed or deprived. She felt safe with a supportive community where there was no judgment or pressure. They worked as a class to brainstorm solutions for obstacles and setbacks. A changed person, Alex has lost 85 pounds and her confidence has grown. She has since become a Zumba instructor and a belly dancer.
YMCA’S DIABETES PREVENTION PROGRAM The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program helps you take control of your health by adopting habits to reduce your chances of developing type 2 diabetes and improve your overall health and well-being. The program provides a supportive environment where participants work together in a small group to learn about healthier eating and increasing their physical activity in order to reduce their risk for developing diabetes. The program is led by a trained Lifestyle Coach in a classroom setting, is delivered over a 12-month period, beginning with 16 weekly sessions followed by monthly maintenance. In order to qualify for the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program, participants must be at least 18 years old, overweight (BMI of 25 or greater) and at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes or have been diagnosed with prediabetes.
