BUILDING COMMUNITY SPRING PROGRAM GUIDE MARCH-MAY MUKILTEO YMCA
Greetings & Welcome to Our YMCA, Spring is a great time to explore all the Y has to offer. For your kids, we’ve worked hard to create fun, skill-building opportunities for all ages, including: Outdoor Soccer, Hip Hop, Tumbling, Art, Karate, Swim Lessons, Skateboard Lessons, Kids’ Night and Day Out, and awesome Spring Break Camps. For adults, check out one of our dynamic Group Exercise classes, led by the best Group Exercise Instructors around, like Strength Train Together, Cycling, or TRX. And, for those facing challenges and looking for support, make sure to look into our Actively Changing Together (ACT), Diabetes Prevention Program, or LiveStrong at the Y for Cancer Survivors programs. Each creates a small, compassionate community dedicated to helping each other work on getting stronger and adopting healthy habits. For parents: summer is right around the corner, and the Mukilteo Y offers more variety of summer camps than any other organization in Snohomish County. Consider signing up for Horse, Venture, Specialty, or Mini-Camp for our youngest campers, or our most popular Discovery Camp. It’s going to be a great summer. Please let us know if there’s anything we can do to serve you better. And, make sure to join us for Healthy Kids Day on Saturday, April 29th, from 10am – 1pm, for one of our biggest events of the year. In service, Cory Armstrong-Hoss Associate Executive

MEMBERSHIP TYPES FACILITY MEMBERSHIP Get full access to fitness centers at all Washington State YMCAs with a Facility Membership. Choose from a wide menu of free group exercise classes, enjoy lap and recreational swimming, and receive a free wellness orientation when you join. And as a facility member, you’ll be eligible for priority registration and reduced fees on specialty classes and programs for your whole family. PROGRAM MEMBERSHIP If you’re not already a Y Facility Member and want to participate in programs like summer camps, youth sports, swimming lessons and child care, you’ll need an annual Program Membership. You’ll receive the same great level of quality and caring for which the Y is known, but without access to wellness centers and other amenities offered through a full Facility Membership. COMMUNITY MEMBERSHIP Belonging is a philosophy at the heart of the Y. Everyone in the community is considered a free Community Member and is welcome to participate in key community events and programs such as fun runs, health fairs, and community education. MY Y IS NOW EVERY Y IN WASHINGTON We want to encourage members to use the Y as often as they can. Now, full facility/full privilege YMCA members can use other Y facilities throughout the state. See website for program details. CORPORATE MEMBERSHIP As part of the YMCA’s corporate membership plan, employees will enjoy the benefits of belonging to Snohomish County’s largest and most respected health, wellness, and human service organization. For more information about corporate membership, please contact the Welcome Center. MEMBERSHIP FOR ALL We believe everyone deserves a Y experience, so the YMCA of Snohomish County offers financial assistance to individuals and families who might otherwise not be able to afford membership or program fees. MY ACHIEVERS PROGRAM (MAP) The My Achievers Program (MAP) started in September 2001 The program was developed as an effort to eliminate the achievement gap for students who face daily challenges due to racial/ethnic barriers, immigration status, and socioeconomic factors. MAP is unique among the Y’s program offerings in that academic success and college readiness are the main focus for the program, along with developing leadership skills, empathy, social consciousness, and service to others. SWIM LESSONS NURTURING SKILLS AND BUILDING CONFIDENCE IN THE WATER For more than 160 years, the YMCA has nurtured potential and united communities across America to create lasting, meaningful change. Everything the Y does is in service of building a better us. One of the most effective ways to accomplish this is to teach youth, teens, and adults to swim, so they can stay safe around water and learn the skills they need to make swimming a lifelong pursuit for staying healthy. Y swim instructors are nationally certified. Their training includes CPR, AED, First Aid and Oxygen Administration. Swim lessons provide important life skills that could save a life and will benefit students for a lifetime.
Where Did All the Fish Go? Changes to Y Swim Lessons As “America’s Swim Instructor,” the Y has been teaching kids how to be safe around water for decades. Beginning April 2017, we’ll be making some changes to our swim lesson structure to simplify and more accurately describe skill levels. What is different? We’re making two key changes to swim lessons:
Name changes: Lesson names are changing to stages that better reflect the skills learned, and we’re moving away from the identifying fish levels. Visit your local Y for more information and a detailed guide on which stage is appropriate for your children. When registering for upcoming sessions, these changes will be reflected both on the website and if signing up at your local branch.
Curriculum changes: We’re also changing the curriculum to better serve different learning styles of our youth participants. We’ve simplified the structure by focusing on benchmark skills and goals in each stage. Students progress from fundamentals to stroke technique over six distinct stages. Swimming lessons are essential for kids to become safe around water, and learn to set and achieve goals. We’re looking forward to launching this new swim lesson structure and helping many more young people build swimming confidence.

SWIM LESSONS WE’RE HERE FOR EVERYONE All ages—from infants to seniors— can learn to swim.
Swim Starters Aquatic Program Accompanied by a parent*, infants and toddlers learn to be comfortable in the water and develop swim readiness skills through fun and confidence-building experiences, while parents learn about water safety, drowning prevention, and the importance of supervision. Stage Descriptions: A / Water Discovery Introduces infants and toddlers to the aquatic environment. B / Water Exploration Focuses on exploring body positions, blowing bubbles, and fundamental safety and aquatic skills.
Swim Basics for Preschool, School Age, Teen, and Adult Students learn personal water safety and achieve basic swimming competency by learning two benchmark skills: swim, float, swim— sequencing front glide, roll, back float, roll, front glide, and exit—and jump, push, turn, grab. In Water Acclimation, Water Movement, and Water Stamina, students are taught the recommended skills for all to have around water including safe water habits, underwater exploration, and how to swim to safety and exit in the event of falling into a body of water. Activities, games, and drills, geared to reinforce learning, are utilized heavily as students progress in this skill-based approach to swimming. Stage Descriptions: 1 / Water Acclimation Increases comfort with underwater exploration and introduces basic self-rescue skills performed with assistance. 2 / Water Movement Encourages forward movement in water and basic self-rescue skills performed independently. 3 / Water Stamina Develops intermediate self-rescue skills performed at longer distances than in previous stages.
Swim Strokes for Preschool, School Age, Teen, and Adult Having mastered the fundamentals, students learn additional water safety skills and build stroke technique, developing skills that prevent chronic disease, increase social-emotional and cognitive well-being, and foster a lifetime of physical activity. In Stroke Introduction, Stroke Development and Stroke Mechanics, swimmers are introduced to the four competitive swimming strokes as well as rescue skills and healthy lifestyle habits. Stage Descriptions: 4 / Stroke Introduction Introduces basic stroke technique in front crawl and back crawl and reinforces water safety through treading water and elementary backstroke. 5 / Stroke Development Introduces breast-stroke and butterfly and reinforces water safety through treading water and sidestroke. 6 / Stroke Mechanics Refines stroke technique on all major competitive strokes and encourages swimming as part of a healthy lifestyle.
Specialty Classes and Programs Swimmers who love the water and want further instruction for future aquatics activities enjoy participating in our Specialty Programs focused on leadership, competition, and recreation. We continually develop our specialty program curriculum. Please check with your Y for new offerings.

HEALTHY LIVING YMCA’S DIABETES PREVENTION PROGRAM
WHAT IS PREDIABETES?
If you are at high risk for type 2 diabetes, the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program can help you adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles that will help you reduce your chances of developing diabetes.
Prediabetes is a condition in which individuals have blood glucose levels that are higher than normal, but not high enough to be classified as diabetes. People with prediabetes are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.
The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program helps those at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles by eating healthier, increasing physical activity and losing a modest amount of weight in order to reduce their chances of developing the disease.
An estimated one in three U.S. adults has prediabetes, yet just 11% of those with prediabetes know they have it. Prediabetes increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke.
Research by the National Institutes of Health has proven that programs like the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program can reduce the number of cases of type 2 diabetes by 58%.
Risk for developing type 2 diabetes may be reduced or eliminated by weight loss, healthier eating, and increased physical activity.
PROGRAM GOALS: Reduce body weight by 7% Increase physical activity to 150 minutes per week
DETAILS: In a classroom setting, a trained lifestyle coach will facilitate a small group of participants in learning about healthier eating, physical activity and other behavior changes. The year-long program consists of 25 sessions over the course of one year. The group will meet every week for 16 weeks, followed by three biweekly classes, then six months of follow-up with one session per month.
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE? In order to qualify for the program, you must be at least18 years old, overweight (BMI > 25)* and at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes indicated by a confirmatory blood value†, prediabetes determined by clinical diagnosis of Gestational Diabetes (GDM) during previous pregnancy, or a qualifying risk score.
TO SEE IF YOU QUALIFY, AND TO ENROLL, CONTACT: Andrea Weiler 360 453 2190 *Asian individual(s) BMI > 22 †Individuals who have already been diagnosed with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes do not qualify for this program.
