SPLASH INTO SUMMER

SUMMER PROGRAM GUIDE JUNE-AUGUST MUKILTEO YMCA

Greetings & Welcome to Our YMCA, Summer is a great time to explore all the Y has to offer. For your kids, our staff has worked hard to provide the most variety of Summer Camps anywhere in Snohomish County. Kids can choose from our stellar licensed Discovery Camp, Horse Camp, Sports Camp, Venture Teen Camp, Specialty Camp, Skateboard & Scoot Camps, and Mini-Camps, half-day experiences designed for 4-6 year olds. At our Y, there’s a camp for every type of kid, and each focuses on three key areas: Achievement, Relationships, and Belonging. In addition to Summer Camps, make sure to check out our revamped Swim Lessons. Because the Puget Sound is full of lakes, rivers, and beachfront, we’re focusing on ensuring every kid and adult who comes through our Aquatics Programs gains the skills necessary to be safe and have fun around water. For adults, check out one of our dynamic Group Exercise classes – such as Strength Train Together, Zumba, Cycling or Yoga -- which we’ve refined and improved with member feedback. Also, make sure to connect with one of our Health & Wellbeing staff, to make sure we’re doing all we can to help you meet your health and fitness goals.

Have a great summer! In service,

Cory Armstrong-Hoss Associate Executive

MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION NOW IT’S EASIER THAN EVER TO JOIN THE Y! Membership in the Y is a special thing. Be a part of a leading nonprofit organization for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The YMCA of Snohomish County is a membership organization and anyone can join. So, with simple monthly dues, you have no contracts or minimum stays to worry about and no sales pitches to endure. Just quality, healthy programs that your whole family can enjoy.

MEMBERSHIP TYPES FACILITY MEMBERSHIP Get full access to fitness centers at all Washington State YMCAs with a Facility Membership. Choose from a wide menu of free group exercise classes, enjoy lap and recreational swimming, and receive a free wellness orientation when you join. And as a facility member, you’ll be eligible for priority registration and reduced fees on specialty classes and programs for your whole family. PROGRAM MEMBERSHIP If you’re not already a Y Facility Member and want to participate in programs like summer camps, youth sports, swimming lessons and child care, you’ll need an annual Program Membership. You’ll receive the same great level of quality and caring for which the Y is known, but without access to wellness centers and other amenities offered through a full Facility Membership. COMMUNITY MEMBERSHIP Belonging is a philosophy at the heart of the Y. Everyone in the community is considered a free Community Member and is welcome to participate in key community events and programs such as fun runs, health fairs, and community education. MY Y IS NOW EVERY Y IN WASHINGTON We want to encourage members to use the Y as often as they can. Sometimes, it’s more convenient for members to use a Y in a different location when travelling, near a workplace, or in another region. Now, full facility/full privilege YMCA members can use other Y facilities throughout the state. See website for program details. CORPORATE MEMBERSHIP As part of the YMCA’s corporate membership plan, employees will enjoy the benefits of belonging to Snohomish County’s largest and most respected health, wellness, and human service organization. For more information about corporate membership, please contact the Welcome Center. MEMBERSHIP FOR ALL We believe everyone deserves a Y experience, so the YMCA of Snohomish County offers financial assistance to individuals and families who might otherwise not be able to afford membership or program fees. Ask a staff member about financial assistance.

SWIM LESSONS NURTURING SKILLS AND BUILDING CONFIDENCE IN THE WATER For more than 160 years, the YMCA has nurtured potential and united communities across America to create lasting, meaningful change. Everything the Y does is in service of building a better us. One of the most effective ways to accomplish this is to teach youth, teens, and adults to swim, so they can stay safe around water and learn the skills they need to make swimming a lifelong pursuit for staying healthy. Y swim instructors are nationally certified. Their training includes CPR, AED, First Aid and Oxygen Administration. Swim lessons provide important life skills that could save a life and will benefit students for a lifetime.

Where Did All the Fish Go? Changes to Y Swim Lessons As “America’s Swim Instructor,” the Y has been teaching kids how to be safe around water for decades. In April 2017, we made some changes to our swim lesson structure to simplify and more accurately describe skill levels. What is different? We made two key changes to swim lessons:

Name changes: Lesson names have changed to stages that better reflect the skills learned, and we’ve moved away from the identifying fish levels. Visit your local Y for more information and a detailed guide on which stage is appropriate for your children. When registering for upcoming sessions, these changes are reflected both on the website and if signing up at your local branch.

Curriculum changes: We’ve also changed the curriculum to better serve different learning styles of our youth participants. We’ve simplified the structure by focusing on benchmark skills and goals in each stage. Students progress from fundamentals to stroke technique over six distinct stages. Swimming lessons are essential for kids to become safe around water, and learn to set and achieve goals. We’re looking forward to serving our members in this new swim lesson structure and helping many more young people build swimming confidence.

SWIM LESSONS WE’RE HERE FOR EVERYONE All ages—from infants to seniors— can learn to swim.

Swim Starters Aquatic Program Accompanied by a parent*, infants and toddlers learn to be comfortable in the water and develop swim readiness skills through fun and confidence-building experiences, while parents learn about water safety, drowning prevention, and the importance of supervision. Stage Descriptions: A / Water Discovery Introduces infants and toddlers to the aquatic environment. B / Water Exploration Focuses on exploring body positions, blowing bubbles, and fundamental safety and aquatic skills.

Swim Basics for Preschool, School Age, Teen, and Adult Students learn personal water safety and achieve basic swimming competency by learning two benchmark skills: swim, float, swim— sequencing front glide, roll, back float, roll, front glide, and exit—and jump, push, turn, grab. In Water Acclimation, Water Movement, and Water Stamina, students are taught the recommended skills for all to have around water including safe water habits, underwater exploration, and how to swim to safety and exit in the event of falling into a body of water. Activities, games, and drills, geared to reinforce learning, are utilized heavily as students progress in this skill-based approach to swimming. Stage Descriptions: 1 / Water Acclimation Increases comfort with underwater exploration and introduces basic self-rescue skills performed with assistance. 2 / Water Movement Encourages forward movement in water and basic self-rescue skills performed independently. 3 / Water Stamina Develops intermediate self-rescue skills performed at longer distances than in previous stages.

Swim Strokes for Preschool, School Age, Teen, and Adult Having mastered the fundamentals, students learn additional water safety skills and build stroke technique, developing skills that prevent chronic disease, increase social-emotional and cognitive well-being, and foster a lifetime of physical activity. In Stroke Introduction, Stroke Development and Stroke Mechanics, swimmers are introduced to the four competitive swimming strokes as well as rescue skills and healthy lifestyle habits. Stage Descriptions: 4 / Stroke Introduction Introduces basic stroke technique in front crawl and back crawl and reinforces water safety through treading water and elementary backstroke. 5 / Stroke Development Introduces breast-stroke and butterfly and reinforces water safety through treading water and sidestroke. 6 / Stroke Mechanics Refines stroke technique on all major competitive strokes and encourages swimming as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Specialty Classes and Programs Swimmers who love the water and want further instruction for future aquatics activities enjoy participating in our Specialty Programs focused on leadership, competition, and recreation. We continually develop our specialty program curriculum. Please check with your Y for new offerings.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY VOLUNTEERISM & GIVING

SOCIAL SERVICES

VOLUNTEER, DONATE, ADVOCATE Our movement is made up of people of all ages and from every walk of life, all working side-by-side to ensure that everyone, regardless of gender, income, or background, has the opportunity to live life to the fullest. Financial assistance keeps the Y available for kids and families who need us most. We count on the generosity of our members and community to help people of all ages and from all walks of life be more healthy, confident, connected, and secure. When you give to the Y, your gift will have a meaningful, enduring impact right in your own neighborhood. The Y’s Financial Assistance Program is supported by contributions to our Annual Campaign and United Way. And finally, the Y could not survive without the dedication of our volunteers. From youth tutors to committee members, teen mentors to fundraisers, board members to fitness instructors, volunteers lend their time, talents, and energy to help strengthen our community.

Y COMMUNITY

VOLUNTEERS OF THE Y • Lead our Boards of Directors and branch committees. • Raise funds to ensure the Y is accessible to all members of the community through Annual Campaign. • Motivate and support youth through coaching our sports teams and teaching many of our classes. • Extend a hand to help adults who want to do more, be more or live healthier through healthy living programs. • Participate in opportunities to give back and support neighbors through food drives, community events and more!

Y Community provides free or reduced-fee activities to families in partnered emergency and transitional shelters. Activities vary from the YMCA and other locations. Register with your caseworker or the Community Coordinator. Y community programs are made available through community Annual Campaign donations. Contact Member Services if you would like to make a gift to support future programming. YOUTH MEMBERSHIP The Y is for everyone. Youth Memberships are available to teens who are eligible for free or reduced-price lunches at school. For Ages 10 and older. Turn in your Youth Membership application with: • School District letter of eligibility for the free/reduced lunch program, or from a school counselor confirming eligibility. • Payment of $17 or $34, based on free or reduced status

Additional Information: Contact Kate Rossart, Senior Program Director, 425 493 2415

If you would like to donate some of your time please pick up a volunteer application. Volunteer opportunities and application can be found on our website at ymca-snoco.org - just click on our Social Responsibility link at the top of the page. For volunteer information at the Mukilteo YMCA, please contact Rexanne Otti, Director of Camp, Volunteerism, & Philanthropy, at 425 493 2406.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Giving back and supporting our neighbors is part of what makes the Y the Y. We are a community and we lend a hand where we can.

TOGETHER, WE CAN BUILD A BETTER US Every day, the YMCA of Snohomish County gives our community the support it needs to learn, grow, and thrive. But keeping our neighborhoods great is a full-time job. Every day, our community faces new challenges that create a greater need for the work we do. And we need your help to do it. Your gift can help Snohomish County and everyone in it shine. Your support will help ensure that everyone, regardless of age or income has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive at the YMCA. Please consider making a gift to the Mukilteo 2016 Annual Campaign. For a better you. For a better community. The Y.™ For a better us.™ Learn more at ymca-snoco.org/ForABetterUs
