While Diane was surprised to learn there was a family-oriented community center where you can work out, be safe, and have a great time, her husband Rodney already knew that. He remembers the Y supporting him during difficult times in his past. When they had their daughter Sarah, the whole family started coming to the Y. Sarah started with ballet and swim lessons, and with support from the Y’s Annual Campaign, she attends Y child care and summer camps. Diane and Rodney trust that Sarah is growing up strong and healthy through school, church, and the Y. “The Y is about building moral values, passion, empathy, and character,” says Diane. “No matter what we’re going through, the Y is the one thing we want in our life.”

MY Y STORY FINDING HER WAY Born in Iraq, Zahraa and her family fled to Jordan to escape the turmoil of the Iraq war. Her family moved to the United States in 2011 in search of a better life. She quickly found the YMCA Minority Achievers Program (MAP) at Mariner High School through the recommendation of a friend. Zahraa says she’s glad to have been part of MAP. It helped her advocate to her other Middle Eastern friends to be part of something cool. ”Life in the United States was new and overwhelming. Participating in MAP helped me grow. It’s helped me with my English, and I feel like I am a part of something. It’s even helped me get a scholarship to attend college and to get my first job at the YMCA. I never knew this could be possible. It is amazing to me.” To learn more about MAP and to join, contact,: Ricardo Heredia, Director of Youth Outreach 425 493 2435, rheredia@ymca-snoco.org

NURTURING SKILLS AND BUILDING CONFIDENCE IN THE WATER For more than 160 years, the YMCA has nurtured potential and united communities across America to create lasting, meaningful change. Everything the Y does is in service of building a better us. One of the most effective ways to accomplish this is to teach youth, teens, and adults to swim, so they can stay safe around water and learn the skills they need to make swimming a lifelong pursuit for staying healthy. Y swim instructors are nationally certified. Their training includes CPR, AED, First Aid and Oxygen Administration. Swim lessons provide important life skills that could save a life and will benefit students for a lifetime.

Swim Starters Aquatic Program Accompanied by a parent*, infants and toddlers learn to be comfortable in the water and develop swim readiness skills through fun and confidence-building experiences, while parents learn about water safety, drowning prevention, and the importance of supervision. Stage Descriptions: A / Water Discovery Introduces infants and toddlers to the aquatic environment. B / Water Exploration Focuses on exploring body positions, blowing bubbles, and fundamental safety and aquatic skills.

Swim Basics for Preschool, School Age, Teen, and Adult Students learn personal water safety and achieve basic swimming competency by learning two benchmark skills: swim, float, swim— sequencing front glide, roll, back float, roll, front glide, and exit—and jump, push, turn, grab. In Water Acclimation, Water Movement, and Water Stamina, students are taught the recommended skills for all to have around water including safe water habits, underwater exploration, and how to swim to safety and exit in the event of falling into a body of water. Activities, games, and drills, geared to reinforce learning, are utilized heavily as students progress in this skill-based approach to swimming. Stage Descriptions: 1 / Water Acclimation Increases comfort with underwater exploration and introduces basic self-rescue skills performed with assistance. 2 / Water Movement Encourages forward movement in water and basic self-rescue skills performed independently. 3 / Water Stamina Develops intermediate self-rescue skills performed at longer distances than in previous stages.

Swim Strokes for Preschool, School Age, Teen, and Adult Having mastered the fundamentals, students learn additional water safety skills and build stroke technique, developing skills that prevent chronic disease, increase social-emotional and cognitive well-being, and foster a lifetime of physical activity. In Stroke Introduction, Stroke Development and Stroke Mechanics, swimmers are introduced to the four competitive swimming strokes as well as rescue skills and healthy lifestyle habits. Stage Descriptions: 4 / Stroke Introduction Introduces basic stroke technique in front crawl and back crawl and reinforces water safety through treading water and elementary backstroke. 5 / Stroke Development Introduces breast-stroke and butterfly and reinforces water safety through treading water and sidestroke. 6 / Stroke Mechanics Refines stroke technique on all major competitive strokes and encourages swimming as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Specialty Classes and Programs Swimmers who love the water and want further instruction for future aquatics activities enjoy participating in our Specialty Programs focused on leadership, competition, and recreation. MY Y STORY YMCA IS A LIFELINE DURING TIME OF NEED

Bill Euster and his wife, Sally, joined the YMCA shortly after it first opened, and used the Y a great deal over the years. Sally was diagnosed with cancer in 2001, and then again in 2006 after a four year remission. “During her treatment Sally required a great deal of rest. When she was resting, I would run errands and get a workout in at the Y,” said Bill. Sally passed away in 2008. “Since her death, the Y has been a real lifeline for me. I use the weight machines and participate in the active older adult classes several times a week. It is not just the exercise, however, that makes the Y so important to me. It is first and foremost the people - both staff and friends with whom to have fun and to play.”

HEALTH, WELL-BEING & FITNESS WHAT IS PREDIABETES? Prediabetes is a condition in which individuals have blood glucose levels that are higher than normal, but not high enough to be classified as diabetes. People with prediabetes are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. An estimated one in three U.S. adults has prediabetes, yet just 11% of those with prediabetes know they have it. Prediabetes increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Risk for developing type 2 diabetes may be reduced or eliminated by weight loss, healthier eating, and increased physical activity. Visit our website today to take a quiz to learn if you are at risk for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. Learn more at ymca-snoco.org/preventdiabetes.

YMCA’S DIABETES PREVENTION PROGRAM. If you are at high risk for type 2 diabetes, the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program can help you adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles that will help you reduce your chances of developing diabetes. The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program helps those at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles by eating healthier, increasing physical activity and losing a modest amount of weight in order to reduce their chances of developing the disease. Research by the National Institutes of Health has proven that programs like the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program can reduce the number of cases of type 2 diabetes by 58%. PROGRAM GOALS:

Reduce body weight by 7%

Increase physical activity to 150 minutes per week
