CREATING WELCOMING COMMUNITIES FOR ALL! At the Y, we believe communities are at their strongest when everyone feels valued, has support to reach their potential and can fully participate in society. Today, there are more than 42 million foreign-born individuals living in the U.S.—more than at any other point in history. For us to reach our potential as a society, it is imperative that immigrants have access to integration services and receiving communities are prepared to welcome all. Welcoming Week is a national celebration of the growing movement of communities that fully embrace new Americans and their contributions to the social fabric of our country. Created by YMCA of the USA’s (Y-USA) national partner Welcoming America, Welcoming Week brings together immigrants and U.S.-born residents at community-based events to promote cross-cultural understanding and raise awareness of the benefits of welcoming everyone!

Most importantly, children learn how to be their best selves. Specific activities are different for each location and age group, but all locations feature:

SWIM LESSONS NUTURING SKILLS AND BUILDING CONFIDENCE IN THE WATER
PRIVATE AND SEMI-PRIVATE LESSONS
For more than 160 years, the YMCA has nurtured potential and united communities across America to create lasting, meaningful change. Everything the Y does is in service of building a better us. One of the most effective ways to accomplish this is to teach youth, teens, and adults to swim, so they can stay safe around water and learn the skills they need to make swimming a lifelong pursuit for staying healthy. Y swim instructors are nationally certified. Their training includes CPR, AED, First Aid and Oxygen Administration. Swim lessons provide important life skills that could save a life and will benefit students for a lifetime.
Private Lessons are taught on a one-on-one basis tailored to fit your individual needs or goals. Semi-Private Lessons can be used to teach multiple individuals of a similar skill level at the same time. Students who are unable to participate in group lessons due to special needs that make a group environment unsafe are given priority.
Teen and Adult (12-17 years and 18+) Classes will focus on the individual goals and needs of each student. This class helps develop comfort in the water, introduce air exchange, floating on front and back, learn basic crawl stroke and other basic strokes. Students are introduced to the backstroke, sidestroke, breaststroke, and elementary backstroke, with emphasis on technique to increase endurance.
WE’RE HERE FOR EVERYONE All ages-from infants to seniors–can learn to swim. Check out our class offerings to find one that fits your family’s busy schedule.

HEALTHY LIVING YMCA’S DIABETES PREVENTION PROGRAM
WHAT IS PREDIABETES?
If you are at high risk for type 2 diabetes, the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program can help you adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles that will help you reduce your chances of developing diabetes.
Prediabetes is a condition in which individuals have blood glucose levels that are higher than normal, but not high enough to be classified as diabetes. People with prediabetes are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.
The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program helps those at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles by eating healthier, increasing physical activity and losing a modest amount of weight in order to reduce their chances of developing the disease. Research by the National Institutes of Health has proven that programs like the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program can reduce the number of cases of type 2 diabetes by 58%. PROGRAM GOALS:
Reduce body weight by 7%
Increase physical activity to 150 minutes per week
An estimated one in three U.S. adults has prediabetes, yet just 11% of those with prediabetes know they have it. Prediabetes increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Risk for developing type 2 diabetes may be reduced or eliminated by weight loss, healthier eating, and increased physical activity. Visit our website today to take a quiz to learn if you are at risk for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. Learn more at ymca-snoco.org/preventdiabetes. TO SEE IF YOU QUALIFY, AND TO ENROLL, CONTACT: Healthy Living Director, 425 374 5777
