Happy Spring!
Craig Chambers, Senior Director
It’s hard to believe that we’ve already been open for six whole months! Since our opening on September 3rd, things have been an absolute whirlwind of activity at our Stanwood-Camano Y. We’ve had the opportunity to engage with some pretty amazing members, witness some extraordinary wellness success stories, and partner with some incredible local agencies & businesses. This has been an exciting growth opportunity and an opportunity for us to learn and grow as we fine-tune our procedures, policies, and business practices.
P 360 572 3391, E cchambers@ymca-snoco.org
The commitment, support and appreciation we have seen from you, our valued members, has been the constant throughout all of this activity. I am reminded on a daily basis what an amazing community of people we have here at our Stanwood-Camano YMCA. I feel so fortunate to be included in this. My sincere THANK YOU goes out to the faithful members who make our Y the fun and welcoming place that it is, the volunteers who guide and support our efforts, the many donors who help make our dreams a reality through their philanthropic support, and to our dedicated and committed staff team, who work hard to make this Y the best that it can be.
P 360 572 3413 E gspooner@ymca-snoco.org
As we prepare to open our first Child Care site and prepare for our first summer of multiple Camp offerings, I am so excited for the future of our Stanwood-Camano YMCA! I am proud to know that our new Stanwood-Camano Y is a partner in creating positive places for our young people and is a place of refuge for so many. It is very reassuring to me that so many people have had positive experiences with our YMCA and that they continue to view our Y as a necessary component of life here in Snohomish and Island Counties.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT At the Y, we believe every child has potential, and we’re here to nurture that potential. From youth sports to academic support to leadership development, the Y helps bring out the best in kids, and they keep surprising us with all they can do.
STARTING APRIL 17 BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL CHILD CARE When school’s out, you can trust the Y to provide an engaging experience for your child right at school. Y School Age programs give your child the opportunity to get to know some of their classmates better as they engage in active play and collaborate on fun projects. In the process, they’ll continue to develop the physical, educational, emotional, and social skills that are essential for success. Our School-Age Care programs: Create safe atmospheres of learning that helps develop self-confidence and builds character through promoting the values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility Help each child develop relationships with others and learn to work together in a cooperative manner Involve and serves families in significant ways that build upon their strengths Uses curriculum that supports child-centered and childdirected activities Creates an environment where team members are partners with parents and other caregivers, working together to help kids grow up healthy, happy, and strong Our School-Age program serves children enrolled in the Stanwood -Camano School District during their out-of-school times from 5:30 am-6:30 pm. Our program is located at the Stanwood-Camano YMCA. FEE OPTIONS Our rate option sheets are available online, at the child care site, and at our Stanwood-Camano YMCA branch.

SPRING 2017 | STANWOOD-CAMANO YMCA
OUR STAFF Our child care programs are staffed with people who understand the cognitive, physical and social development of kids, the need children have to feel connected and supported in trying new things, and the caring and reinforcement parents and families need to help each other. Each child care location has a dedicated Site Director, with a minimum of 30 college credits in early childhood or elementary education. All of our staff have had previous experience working with children. Staff have attended, and continue to attend, regularly scheduled training events on behavior management, communication skills, and creative activities to do with kids. Staff maintain current certification in CPR, First Aid, Child Abuse Prevention, and other certification required by the licensor. In addition, staff and volunteers are thoroughly screened prior to employment and evaluated on a regular basis to ensure continually high performance. SNACKS Menus are created to meet our healthy eating guidelines and be appealing to children. We strive to improve nutrition and offer variety. Providing pleasant mealtime experiences is key in promoting healthy eating habits. A morning and an afternoon snack are provided daily at scheduled times. Menus are available at child care sites upon request. ACTIVITIES Children are like sponges - they watch and absorb knowledge, skills and values from everything and everyone around them. At the Y, we believe the values and skills learned early on are vital building blocks for quality of life and future success. At the Y, school-age kids make friends, learn new skills and do homework. Most importantly, children learn how to be their best selves. Specific activities are different for each location and age group, but all locations feature:
Academic support from caring role models
Physical activity and movement
Free-Choice/Open Centers
Healthy Snack
Group Time
30-minute Outdoor Time; weather permitting
Projects and Activities in Arts, STEM, Literacy, and Cooking
Service learning opportunities
We support school efforts in learning by bridging the gap between school and back. The Y provides hands on experiential activities for kids to learn in different ways. Our School-Age Child Care staff strive to create ways for every child to learn and grow.

The Y is the starting point for many youth to learn about becoming and staying active, and developing healthy habits they’ll carry with them throughout their lives. Plus, the benefits are far greater than just physical health. Whether it’s gaining the confidence that comes from learning a new skill or building the positive relationships that lead to good sportsmanship and teamwork, participating in sports at the Y is about building the whole child, from the inside out.

The YMCA approach to Youth Sports is different from many leagues. We focus on the four YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. Every child gets equal playing time and we encourage fair play, positive competition, and family involvement. Our goal is to enable each player to excel in that other game we’re all familiar with: the game of life. All sports and divisions are co-ed.
ROOKIES OUTDOOR SOCCER AGES: 3-4 The YMCA's Rookies Soccer League is an instructional and recreational league. Participants will be introduced to the game and learn basic skills such as dribbling, passing, teamwork and shooting. All players will have fun in a positive and supportive atmosphere. Teams are co-ed and will meet once a week for an hour on Saturdays. Practices will take place during the first half hour and a game will be played during the second half. Rosters will be put together after the first practice.

WHERE DID ALL THE FISH GO? CHANGES TO Y SWIM LESSONS As “America’s Swim Instructor,” the Y has been teaching kids how to be safe around water for decades. Beginning with our Spring II session, we’ll be making some changes to our swim lesson structure to simplify and more accurately describe skill levels.
WHAT IS DIFFERENT? We’re making two key changes to swim lessons:
Name changes: Lesson names are changing to stages that better reflect the skills learned, and we’re moving away from the identifying fish levels. Visit your local Y for more information and a detailed guide on which stage is appropriate for your children. When registering for upcoming sessions, these changes will be reflected both on the website and if signing up at your local branch.
Curriculum changes: We’re also changing the curriculum to better serve different learning styles of our youth participants. We’ve simplified the structure by focusing on benchmark skills and goals in each stage. Students progress from fundamentals to stroke technique over six distinct stages. Swimming lessons are essential for kids to become safe around water, and learn to set and achieve goals. We’re looking forward to launching this new swim lesson structure and helping many more young people build swimming confidence.

home, I got fed up with being stuck in a rut. I had many struggles with getting fit and healthy and began to take group fitness classes at a local gym. The instructor of one of the classes thought I would make an excellent group fitness instructor and encouraged me to take a certification to teach group fitness classes. Now I teach multiple group fitness classes and am a personal trainer. I want to help others get back on track and meet their health and wellness goals. Certifications: AFAA Group Fitness, NCSF Personal, Trainer, Urban Boot Camp, Zumba®
Cole Baker -Fitness as a whole has been a transformative experience for me over the last few years, and I believe it can bring the same amount of positivity to everyone that shares my passion. From experience, I know that it can bring stability, joy, and a better self-image to anyone who’s ready to start on their fitness journey. I want nothing more than to share all of these benefits to members just beginning on that journey, and to expand the ability and techniques of those who have already started. Exercise brings a lot to the lives of everyone, and the key to success is finding a balance between what works best for the individual, along with what they enjoy. Now is the time to plan so you can be sure to get the health care you want. Knowing how you would decide takes some of the burden off family and friends. Have the conversation! SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY VOLUNTEERISM & GIVING
Giving back and supporting our neighbors is part of what makes the Y the Y. We are a community and we lend a hand where we can.
VOLUNTEER, DONATE, ADVOCATE Our movement is made up of people of all ages and from every walk of life, all working side-by-side to ensure that everyone, regardless of gender, income, or background, has the opportunity to live life to the fullest.
TOGETHER, WE CAN BUILD A BETTER US Every day, the YMCA of Snohomish County gives our community the support it needs to learn, grow, and thrive. From advocacy to food security, disease prevention to athletics, football to dance classes, everything we do helps strengthen our neighborhood and the people who live here. But keeping our neighborhoods great is a full-time job. Every day, our community faces new challenges that create a greater need for the work we do. And we need your help to do it. Your gift can help Snohomish County and everyone in it shine.
For a better you. For a better community.
Financial assistance keeps the Y available for kids and families who need us most. We count on the generosity of our members and community to help people of all ages and from all walks of life be more healthy, confident, connected, and secure. When you give to the Y, your gift will have a meaningful, enduring impact right in your own neighborhood. The Y’s Financial Assistance Program is supported by contributions to our Annual Campaign and United Way. And finally, the Y could not survive without the dedication of our volunteers. From youth tutors to committee members, teen mentors to fundraisers, board members to fitness instructors, volunteers lend their time, talents, and energy to help strengthen our community.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY VOLUNTEERISM & GIVING (CONT.) WINTER 2016-17 VOLUNTEER OF THE QUARTER
Nan Curnutt helped us to transform our branch into Dr. Seussville for the Annual Campaign. Nan has also spent many hours helping with administrative work and is very thorough. She is open to helping out wherever and whenever she is needed. We greatly appreciate her keeping us organized and showing up with a generous heart!
Thank you to all of our volunteers! We would not be able to run our programs without your help. Since September, our volunteers have donated nearly 1,000 hours! VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES If you would like to get involved with volunteering at the Y here are some current volunteer opportunities:
Brooke Fenton Brooke has volunteered with us since November 2016, and has volunteered well over 100 hours at the Welcome Center greeting members and answering questions. Brooke comes in to the Y with a smile on her face and ready to work. She is funny and brings a wonderful energy to our branch. Brooke is extremely helpful and always willing to fill in where she is needed. Brooke grew up in the Stanwood. She has worked and volunteered many hours in our community. We are pleased that Brooke has committed so many hours to spend with us. We greatly appreciate her time.
OTHER VOLUNTEER HIGHLIGHTS We also would like to thank the following for their support: Patrick Fagan has coached YMCA basketball and soccer teams and helped with baseball clinics. Patrick has spent a tremendous amount of hours at the Y outside of coaching simply to be of help. He is a positive influence in our community and with our children and is very dedicated to our community. His family is involved in Y programs- we appreciate all that Patrick and his family have brought to our branch.
