YOUTH DEVELOPMENT At the Y, we believe every child has potential, and we’re here to nurture that potential. From youth sports to academic support to leadership development, the Y helps bring out the best in kids, and they keep surprising us with all they can do.
ENROLLING NOW BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL CHILD CARE When school’s out, you can trust the Y to provide an engaging experience for your child right at school. Y School Age programs give your child the opportunity to get to know some of their classmates better as they engage in active play and collaborate on fun projects. In the process, they’ll continue to develop the physical, educational, emotional, and social skills that are essential for success.
Our School-Age Care programs:
Create safe atmospheres of learning that helps develop self-confidence and builds character through promoting the values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility
Help each child develop relationships with others and learn to work together in a cooperative manner
Involve and serves families in significant ways that build upon their strengths
Uses curriculum that supports child-centered and child-directed activities
Creates an environment where team members are partners with parents and other caregivers, working together to help kids grow up healthy, happy, and strong
Our School-Age program serves children enrolled in the Stanwood-Camano School District during their out-of-school times from 6:30 am-6:30 pm. Our programs are located in the following schools: Utsalady Elementary and Cedarhome Elementary This program is also accessible to students enrolled in the following schools via transportation provided daily: Stanwood Elementary, Elger Bay Elementary and Twin City Elementary FEE OPTIONS Our rate option sheets are available online, at the child care site, and at our Stanwood-Camano YMCA branch.

OUR STAFF Our child care programs are staffed with people who understand the cognitive, physical and social development of kids, the need children have to feel connected and supported in trying new things, and the caring and reinforcement parents and families need to help each other. Each child care location has a dedicated Site Director, with a minimum of 30 college credits in early childhood or elementary education. All of our staff have had previous experience working with children. Staff have attended, and continue to attend, regularly scheduled training events on behavior management, communication skills, and creative activities to do with kids. Staff maintain current certification in CPR, First Aid, Child Abuse Prevention, and other certification required by the licensor. In addition, staff and volunteers are thoroughly screened prior to employment and evaluated on a regular basis to ensure continually high performance. SNACKS Menus are created to meet our healthy eating guidelines and be appealing to children. We strive to improve nutrition and offer variety. Providing pleasant mealtime experiences is key in promoting healthy eating habits. A morning and an afternoon snack are provided daily at scheduled times. Menus are available at child care sites upon request. ACTIVITIES Children are like sponges - they watch and absorb knowledge, skills and values from everything and everyone around them. At the Y, we believe the values and skills learned early on are vital building blocks for quality of life and future success. At the Y, school-age kids make friends, learn new skills and do homework. Most importantly, children learn how to be their best selves. Specific activities are different for each location and age group, but all locations feature:
Academic support from caring role models
Physical activity and movement
Free-Choice/Open Centers
Healthy Snack
Group Time
30-minute Outdoor Time; weather permitting
Projects and Activities in Arts, STEM, Literacy, and Cooking
Service learning opportunities
We support school efforts in learning by bridging the gap between school and back. The Y provides hands on experiential activities for kids to learn in different ways. Our School-Age Child Care staff strive to create ways for every child to learn and grow .

YOUTH SPORTS LEAGUES
REGISTRATION Currently taking registration for the 2017-18 school year at the Stanwood-Camano YMCA Welcome Center.
The Y is the starting point for many youth to learn about becoming and staying active, and developing healthy habits they’ll carry with them throughout their lives. Plus, the benefits are far greater than just physical health. Whether it’s gaining the confidence that comes from learning a new skill or building the positive relationships that lead to good sportsmanship and teamwork, participating in sports at the Y is about building the whole child, from the inside out.

CHILD WATCH & ADVENTURE ZONE AGES: 6 weeks-11 years Your child will be safe and well cared for in these areas of the facility while you enjoy your workout. Parents and Guardians must remain on site while utilizing our drop in care areas. Due to heavy usage and limited space, especially during peak times, we have a 2 hour limit in both rooms.
The YMCA approach to Youth Sports is different from many leagues. We focus on the four YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. Every child gets equal playing time and we encourage fair play, positive competition, and family involvement. Our goal is to enable each player to excel in that other game we’re all familiar with: the game of life. All sports and divisions are co-ed.
Please refer to our room schedules for age limits in both Child Watch and Adventure Zone during specific times. Be sure to pick up a parent brochure at the check-in area for more specific information on these member benefits.

One of the most effective ways to accomplish this is to teach youth, teens, and adults to swim, so they can stay safe around water and learn the skills they need to make swimming a lifelong pursuit for staying healthy.

Ages 6 months+ Private Lessons are taught on a one-on-one basis tailored to fit your individual needs or goals. Semi-Private Lessons can be used to teach multiple individuals of a similar skill level at the same time. Students who are unable to participate in group lessons due to special needs that make a group environment unsafe are given priority. PRIVATE LESSONS
All children under age 12 who do not pass the height test will be subject to a swim test. Any child that receives a red wrist band or is age 6 and under must be accompanied by a supervising individual age 14+ in the water at all times. Lifejackets are available for use but any child in a lifejacket must be within five feet of supervising individual. One child per supervising individual may be without a PFD but still accompanied in the water within five feet. All lifejackets must be Coast Guard approved.
Facility Member Fee: $25 per half hour Program Member Fee: $35 per half hour SEMI-PRIVATE LESSONS Facility Member Fee: $12.50 per person/half hour Program Member Fee: $17.50 per person/half hour
Teen and Adult (12-17 years and 18+) Classes will focus on the individual goals and needs of each student. This class helps develop comfort in the water, introduce air exchange, floating on front and back, learn basic crawl stroke and other basic strokes. Students are introduced to the backstroke, sidestroke, breaststroke, and elementary backstroke, with emphasis on technique to increase endurance.
Swim Tests
Lap Swim Lap Swim is reserved for individuals swimming laps. Participants under age14 must pass a lap swim test in order to participate. During Lap Swim three, lanes are available for laps and the open area of the pool may be used for water walking. With the exception of special events and Stanwood High School Swim Team times. When only one lane is open due to programming it will be designated lap swim only, with no water walking allowed for safety reasons.
Spa Regulations Spa rules are posted near the spa. The additional guidelines are for your health and safety: Children under the age of 7 are not allowed to enter the spa for any reason. They may not put their feet or any other body part in the water. Children age 7-13 may use the spa only when a supervising individual adult, age 14+ is in the spa area.
The swim test for Open and Family Swim is an opportunity for the lifeguard to evaluate a child’s stroke and endurance. The child must swim the length of the pool independently, without touching the bottom, with their face in the water for the majority of the test. For kids under age 12. The lap swim test is 50 yards of proficient crawl stroke, demonstrating side breathing and a strong knowledge of lap lane etiquette. For kids under age14.

WHAT IS PREDIABETES? Prediabetes is a condition in which individuals have blood glucose levels that are higher than normal, but not high enough to be classified as diabetes. People with prediabetes are at high risk of developing type 2diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. An estimated one in three U.S. adults has prediabetes, yet just 11% of those with prediabetes know they have it. Prediabetes increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Risk for developing type 2 diabetes may be reduced or eliminated by weight loss, healthier eating, and increased physical activity. Visit our website today to take a quiz to learn if you are at risk for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. Learn more at ymca-snoco.org/preventdiabetes
YMCA’S DIABETES PREVENTION PROGRAM If you are at high risk for type 2 diabetes, the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program can help you adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles that will help you reduce your chances of developing diabetes. Research by the National Institutes of Health has proven that programs like the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program can reduce the number of cases of type 2 diabetes by 58%. PROGRAM GOALS:
Reduce body weight by 7% Increase physical activity to150 minutes per week
DETAILS: In a classroom setting, a trained lifestyle coach will facilitate a small group of participants in learning about healthier eating, physical activity and other behavior changes. Marco Martinez- Exercise is essential for longevity and our psychological well being. It has been a big part of my life since I was 15 years old. Stanwood High School coaches and staff were the people that inspired me when I was a novice, and gave me the confidence to pursue what I routinely do 5 days a week.
Teri Montgomery- Personal Trainer-International Sports
I received my B.S. in Exercise Science at Central Washington University, while running track and field; realizing my long term goal of being a strength and conditioning coach. Coaching athletes through plays and practice is important, but what interests me, is how we help them to run, jump, and throw better.
Lisa D. Bowen- National Council on Strength and Fitness
Another goal of mine is to convey the message of health and wellness for those who are ill-informed about exercise. I always hear about people trying to do workouts that pro- athletes or movie stars may be doing, and I want them to understand that everyone is different and not every model will fit their mold; an athlete or an active older adult.
