TOGETHER FOR A STRONG COMMUNITY 2011 ANNUAL REPORT YMCA OF SNOHOMISH COUNTY

YMCA-snoco.org

Dear Friends At the YMCA of Snohomish County, we’re about strengthening community through our commitment to youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Our focus on these areas allows us to change lives while addressing critical community needs.

Scott Washburn President & CEO

In 2011 nearly 100,000 children, teens, and adults looked to the Y for ways to improve health, to connect with family and friends, and to create a better community. This was made possible by committed volunteers, loyal donors, and passionate staff who bring the YMCA mission and values to life. This past year was a busy one for your Y. Much of 2011 was spent transitioning to a new national brand identity. For the first time in 43 years, the Y unveiled a new logo. However that was just a small part of a much bigger project. What research told us was that while people recognized the Y logo, they didn’t have a complete understanding of what our organization does to strengthen community. The brand transition allowed us to share our story and to increase awareness and understanding of the impact we are making so that more people can take advantage of our unique capacity to foster lasting personal and social change.

Leslie Lauer Association Board Chair

The Y continues to grow and support the needs of youth in our community. We celebrated our tenth year of the Minority Achievers Program with the addition of a site in the Edmonds School District. This program assists middle and high school students who receive homework, academic, and goalsetting support. In addition, we opened two new youth development centers; one in Marysville next to the existing YMCA branch facility, and the other on Casino Road, which is managed by the Mukilteo Family YMCA. These centers will provide the youth in our community with safe places, access to caring adults, and academic support. Our Y was also approached by a passionate group of volunteers who would like to see a YMCA built to support the Stanwood-Camano community. We are in the beginning stages of capital advancement to determine if the project is financially feasible with community support. YMCA volunteers were an integral part of another record Invest in Youth Campaign. As YMCA storytellers, they share the impact that the YMCA has on the youth of our community and how an investment in the Y provides a valuable return in the form of kids who achieve their full potential. We offer our heartfelt appreciation to all the dedicated volunteers, donors, and organizations that support our mission and the youth in our community. Our talented Y staff continue to provide incredible service to the community. Whether they open our facility doors early in the morning, or work on nights and weekends to provide mentorship to teens, their commitment to changing lives through the Y never wavers. They are also incredibly generous in giving of their own resources to not only the Y, but to other community agencies like United Way. Despite the ongoing challenges of a tough economy, your YMCA has never been stronger and more committed to making a positive difference in Snohomish County. Thank you for the support and encouragement that makes this possible.

community impact In 2011, the Y connected with 99,900 community members who participated in a variety of asset-rich activities either as facility members or as program participants through five regional branch locations: Everett, Marysville, Mill Creek, Monroe, Mukilteo, and our Big Brothers Big Sisters affiliate.

Child Care

Youth Development

The Y is the largest child care provider in Snohomish County serving 1,127 children ages 4 weeks through elementary school. With program sites at 22 schools in 7 school districts serving 44 different schools, we provide the consistent care children need to thrive. Our infant through pre-kindergarten programs support parents and their younger children.

Youth Summers are busy at the Y with 1,400 youth participating in summer camp programs that expose youth to new opportunities and friendships. Through our ACT! (Actively Changing Together) program, 180 youth along with their parent/guardians receive resources to reduce youth obesity and establish healthier lifestyles. An additional 15,050 youth participated in ongoing healthy living activities including swimming, basketball, and Rookie sports.

Teens 6,273 teens developed relationships, gained self-confidence and received academic guidance in a variety of teen out of school programs, including Teen Tech Centers, Teen Late Nights, Youth & Government, Girls of Promise, and Youth Making a Difference (YMAD).

Mentoring The Minority Achievers Program (MAP) assisted 735 minority and immigrant middle and high school students with home-work support and academic and career goal setting through 14 program sites in the county. Big Brothers Big Sisters provided 285 quality one-to-one mentoring matches through school-based and community-based programs.

Adults Healthy Living

Families

social responsibility

56,475 adults participated in healthy living activities such as group exercise, swimming, basketball, yoga, group cycling, racquet sports, and weight training.

Financial Assistance

More than 13,000 family members enjoyed a rich variety of programs including activity nights, holiday events, and recreational outings.

Community Events The YMCA sponsors or collaborates on many community events throughout the year. These include the Community Prayer Breakfast, Healthy Kids Day, Dr. Martin Luther King Day of Service, diversity celebrations, and SPLASH Week (water safety program).

The Y’s Financial Assistance Program, supported by contributions to the annual Invest in Youth campaign and United Way provided $1,630,000 in direct financial assistance to 10,400 individuals.

Volunteers 2,130 volunteers offered valuable assistance with policies, programs, and activities donating a total of 43,000 hours of service to the YMCA.

Staff IMPACT: JJ Frank JJ Frank has been working with teens since 1998. From humble beginnings with teen programs at just three sites when he started, the Y now serves more than 6,273 teens through various programs across the county. In the summer of 2001, JJ helped expand our services to students of color and immigrant students to achieve higher education and career goals through the Minority Achievers Program.

organizational growth

“I work for the Y because I love people,” said JJ. “It’s not about me, but about serving our community and others. I get excited about every day because I can make a difference in someone’s life.” Working with so many youth over the years, JJ has many memorable moments. Those that stand out are the students who grew up in our Y programs, get college degrees, and return to the community and to the Y as volunteers and donors. “We have mentored students to give back to their community, just like the Y gave to them.” “The Y provides a safe place with caring adults and implements healthy activities for our students in Snohomish County. That is our Mission in Action. I am excited about our journey here at the Y and the best is yet to come.”

invest in youth The YMCA of Snohomish County makes every effort to ensure that no person, especially youth, will be denied access to programs and membership because of financial hardship. The YMCA’s Financial Assistance Program is supported by contributions to the annual Invest in Youth campaign. During 2011, $1,630,000 was provided in direct financial assistance to 10,400 individuals. In addition, through the generosity of our donors, United Way, members, and specific program grants, we were able to provide subsidized programs and services to thousands of kids, youth, and families who would not otherwise be able to participate, thus extending opportunities and increasing access to YMCA asset-building programs in extraordinary ways.

the heritage club The Heritage Club is a special group of people who believe in the purpose and traditions of the YMCA and want to ensure this heritage of values is continued for future generations. Heritage Club members support the YMCA of Snohomish County through either a direct contribution to the YMCA Endowment Fund or by including the YMCA in their estate plans. The purpose of the Heritage Club is to encourage thoughtful gifts as a primary means of building a strong endowment capable of providing lasting support for the YMCA mission for years to come. During 2011, the YMCA Endowment Fund provided $74,000 of financial support to many programs and services offered through the YMCA’s branch and affiliate locations.

VOLUNTEER IMPACT: gary’s story Gary Way has been coming to the Y since 1998 and is now one of our most active volunteers. He started out by taking water fitness classes and thought, “Hey, I ought to learn how to do this!” Before long he was teaching his own water fitness classes. Gary works mostly with seniors and members with disabilities. He loves watching them become healthier while gaining independence in the water. Water fitness has become something Gary loves to learn about and has fun changing things up for his exercise classes. He enjoys working with the other instructors and being part of a team. Volunteering has also given back to Gary. After having open heart surgery, he has seen a thirty four percent increase in his heart function since taking water classes and volunteering at the Y. Besides the health benefits, working with others, and reaching out to people, Gary volunteers because as he says, “It beats retirement!”

DONOR IMPACT: ROY & BARBARA Roy Yates has fond childhood memories of the YMCA. When he was in fourth grade he would pack a lunch and take the Number 7 Sunset Hill bus from Ballard to the Downtown Seattle YMCA. While there he would swim, watch movies, and participate in a host of other activities. Roy’s involvement with the Y continued through junior and senior in high school. His Everett Y involvement began as a member in 1968 using the workout facilities and playing basketball. “The Y had a basketball team for many years. A group of us played on that team. Everett Conley, physical director at the Everett YMCA, organized the team and as a result we became good friends.” For Roy, as a boy he learned to swim and enjoyed hanging out with friends. As a teenager he became involved in clubs that provided leadership opportunities. And as an adult he worked out, played basketball, and developed life-long friends. All of this ultimately led to his relationship as a volunteer and donor. Roy and Barb have been giving to the Y since the 1960s. They do so because they feel the value of the Y to the community is important. “I also believe that anything you are involved in you should support financially,” shared Roy.

YMCA-SNOCO.ORG

Roy joined the board in 1969 and over the years has served as president of the board on two different occasions. “When I became a board member and officer I saw the comprehensive value of the Y to our community. I originally joined the Y to meet personal objectives, but stayed involved because I saw the Y from a family and community perspective.”

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Snohomish County 1420 Hewitt Avenue Everett, WA 98201 425 252 2227

Individuals such as Bob Smith, Dan Duryee, Harry Stuchell, Steve Saunders, and Senator Henry (Scoop) Jackson had tremendous influence on Roy as a volunteer. “The YMCA was the foundation of our community and always had been. I believed we could have a greater impact in the future. I wanted to be a part of that and advance the Y’s impact.”

BBBS-SNOCO.ORG

Roy and Barb decided to make a planned gift in conjunction with formation of the Heritage Club. “I believed, along with our board, that we should leverage the Y’s past and current success to ensure the future impact and relevance of the Y in our community,” said Roy. “It is important to me, that long after we are gone, that the Y continues to have a lasting impact on our community.”

Mukilteo Family YMCA 10601 47th Place West, Mukilteo, WA 98275 425 493 9622

Roy Yates has been a volunteer for the YMCA of Snohomish County since 1969. He and his wife Barbara have been donors during his entire tenure as a volunteer. Roy is an Emeritus member of the Board of Trustees and actively serves on two YMCA committees. Roy and Barbara joined the Heritage Club upon its inception in 1993.
