Your YMCA at work in the community

HERE WE

GROW AGAIN STANWOOD-CAMANO YMCA OPENED SEPTEMBER 3

The long-awaited dream of a YMCA was realized when the new Stanwood-Camano YMCA cut the ribbon and opened its doors to the community. A branch of the YMCA of Snohomish County, the Stanwood-Camano YMCA grand opening celebration took place on Sept. 3. After the ceremony, guests were invited to tour the facility, view class demos, go for a swim, and celebrate the opening of this important new community asset. Efforts to bring a YMCA to the Stanwood-Camano community have been in the works since 2010. Working with volunteers, community leaders, and the Stanwood-Camano School District to identify community needs, the YMCA has provided programs in the Stanwood-Camano community since 2012. “We are excited to have this important resource in our community,” said Ken Kettler, Chair, Stanwood-Camano YMCA Board of Directors. “The volunteers involved have worked hard the past six years to make this dream a reality.” The site is within walking distance of three schools, including Stanwood High School and Port Susan Middle School. It is also close to senior housing and the Island Transit bus route, and centrally located to serve the surrounding community.

Dear Friends: Where does the time go? It feels like we just kicked off summer camp, and we are already turning back the clocks for fall. This past summer was an exciting one. Staff and volunteers worked feverishly to open the doors of our new Stanwood-Camano YMCA. Though the day was Seattle-gray, it didn’t scare away the crowd. Hundreds of people turned out to celebrate as our three cornerstone donors cut the ribbon to open the doors. The vision for the Stanwood-Camano YMCA was six years in the making and is a tribute to the volunteers, donors, and staff who worked tirelessly to bring it to fruition. While it’s an awesome building with all new equipment, more importantly it is a resource that will change the lives of thousands of youth, teens, adults, seniors, and families for generations to come. And speaking of summer, we served record numbers of kids through a variety of fun, educational, and life-changing camp opportunities this year. Through YMCA summer programs we hope to inspire kids to work together, make friends, try new experiences, and make them feel welcome and part of something great. An association of now six branches, our YMCAs continue to do great work in our communities. Some of those stories are shared in this Triangle. This is an exciting time for your YMCA. The work we have done gives us much to be proud of and we have many new opportunities to explore. Every day our impact is felt when an individual makes a healthy choice, when a mentor inspires a child, and when a community comes together for the common good.

The YMCA worked with Snohomish County PUD on incentive funding for the installation of energy-efficient LED lighting throughout the new facility. These improvements will help the YMCA save money on its PUD bill allowing it to put that money into community programs. In addition, the facility is in the process to become LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver certified. LEED-certified buildings are resource efficient, use less water and energy, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. A floor-to-ceiling stain glass window created and donated by Camano Island artist Jack Archibald is installed in the main lobby. The YMCA anticipates serving more than 20,000 members and program participants in the Stanwood, Camano Island, and Arlington communities.

YMCA MAKES FUNDRAISING HISTORY FLOYD & DELORES JONES FOUNDATION DONATES $10 MILLION TO YMCA From the beginning, Seattle stockbroker and active philanthropist Floyd Jones has been a generous contributor of both philanthropic leadership and financial resources. By the grand opening of the new Stanwood-Camano YMCA on September 3, the Floyd & Delores Jones Foundation had committed a total of $10 million to the construction of the new Y. The gift is the largest philanthropic gift ever publicly announced by a Snohomish County organization and is one of a very few 8-figure capital gifts received by any YMCA association nationally in the 172 year history of the YMCA. The new Stanwood-Camano YMCA is a result of significant community commitment. Floyd’s leadership, along with that of many committed volunteers, inspired more than 300 additional community members to make personally meaningful gifts to the project, including Pat and Carrie Richardson and Paul and Melanie Sobotta, both Cornerstone donor families and inspiring leaders. The new Y represents $23.2 million in total project costs with the YMCA financing $6 million and $17.2 million raised in philanthropy. The fundraising goal of $13.2 million was met within days of the September 3 grand opening. “We were thrilled to receive this level of support from the foundation,” said Scott Washburn, President & CEO, YMCA of Snohomish County. “Beyond receiving the significant financial contribution, working with Floyd and his son Steve throughout the past six years to realize the community’s vision will remain a highlight in my 37-year career with the Y. Floyd is a true leader in philanthropy. He is living proof that, as he likes to say, ‘Philanthropy is sweetness for the soul.’”

AT A GLANCE IMPACTING OUR COMMUNITY Casino Road Adult Education Academy will serve thousands of adult students in the community A Memorandum of Understanding was recently signed to formalize a coalition among Seattle Goodwill Industries, Edmonds Community College, and the YMCA of Snohomish County. The coalition will be known as the Casino Road Adult Education Academy. The Academy will provide education, support, and opportunities to isolated, marginalized, and low-income communities in the form of adult basic education, case management services, child care, and additional services and programs. Classes started in April and are held at the Children’s Village complex on Casino Road in Everett. The YMCA has collaborated with Seattle Goodwill for three years and provides English for Speakers of Other Languages, an 8-week class to improve consumer skills and prepare students for employment or educational programs.

Bowl for Kids’ Sake Strikes it BIG! YMCA affiliate Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Snohomish County held its annual Bowl for Kids’ Sake event in October. Twenty-one teams from RE/MAX Elite, Boeing, The Everett Clinic, and the BBBS Board of Directors raised more than $20,000 for the important BBBS programs. To learn how you can participate in the future, contact Sanda Anderson, Special Events Coordinator, at sanderson@bbbs-snoco.org.

Marysville YMCA gives dinner, showers, haircuts to homeless, families in need The Marysville YMCA holds monthly Connecting Community dinners, providing those in need with a warm shower, dinner, access to local resources, hair cuts, and toiletries. The event was started by Amanda Knight, Marysville YMCA Member Services Director. Seeing an increase of homeless in her community, she wanted to do something to help. What started as simply a place to take a warm shower, has grown into a community resource event. If you’d like to find out how to help, contact Amanda at aknight@ymca-snoco.org.

YMCA provides 3,587 summer lunches In partnership with the Everett School District, the Everett YMCA provided 3,587 free lunches to youth enrolled in Summer Discovery Camp and Early Learning Child Care, as well as other youth in the community.

The YMCA of Snohomish County sponsored its 56th annual Prayer Breakfast More than 600 community members and business/religious leaders gathered at the Edward D. Hansen Conference Center on March 25 for the 56th annual Good Friday Prayer Breakfast. Dr. Les Parrott was the keynote speaker.

IMPACT IN ACTION Ricarda first learned about the Y through taking GED and English classes at the Casino Road Community Center. The Y’s free child care at the Center allows her to focus on improving her English, reading, and math skills. Through advancing her own education, Ricarda wants to achieve more in her new country and be able to help her children with homework. There’s something else she wants for her kids: to learn to swim. Growing up in Mexico, Ricarda never learned to swim. When she had her own kids, she knew she needed to learn to swim to keep them safe at lakes and pools. Financial assistance provided Ricarda and her family memberships to the Y. Her children are now taking swim lessons, and she too has learned to swim at the Y so she can keep up with them. KEEPING FIT WITH MOBILEFIT

As we look at new and improved ways to bring better service to our members, we naturally look at the fast-changing world of fitness technology and apps.

We have made a recent change in our technology partner and are now making full use of MobileFit® and its wide assortment of fitness aids to make your YMCA experience more complete and enjoyable. For those members who have been regular users of ActivTrax® we are scheduling appointments with our Wellness Coach team to introduce you to the MobileFit® suite of software and apps so you can learn about all that is available to make your Y experience better than ever. We understand that change can be hard, and in order to help you understand this new system we are offering three free sessions with one of our wellness coaches! With your coach assisting you, you will learn the skills required to navigate the system as well as create your own brand new, exciting exercise plans that will help you continue to move along your own personal wellness journey while seeing the results you have been looking for. Our coaches are reaching out and calling all current users of ActivTrax® to personally invite you in for your first appointment. If you have questions or would like to schedule your own appointment, visit your branch Welcome Center.

YMCA SUPPORTS DIVERSE ABILITIES The YMCA of Snohomish County received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Governor’s Committee on Disability Issues and Employment. Working with Washington Vocational Services, the YMCA Property and Facilities department has hired a number of staff with “diverse abilities” to help keep our facilities clean. Rob Millard (on left), YMCA Director of Facilities, accepted the Certificate on behalf of the YMCA. 5

HONORING OUR LEGACY PREPARING FOR THE FUTURE The ‘20s Studio never looked so good! On Nov. 11 more than 100 celebrated stakeholders of the Everett YMCA gathered for an unforgettable evening reflecting on our impressive legacy and sharing plans for the new YMCA. Local historian and storyteller Larry O’Donnell took attendees on a visual walk through history from the beginnings of the Everett YMCA in 1901, highlighting key milestones along the way.

Former YMCA President & CEO Jerry Beavers shared that it was the Everett Board in 1987 who voted to change the name from the Everett YMCA to the YMCA of Snohomish County. From there the vision was established to build YMCAs and offer programs in the suburbs, which included Marysville, Monroe, Mukilteo, and Mill Creek. The Stanwood-Camano YMCA joined the family this year. To learn more about the new Everett Family YMCA, contact Ted Wenta, Senior VP Operations at twenta@ymca-snoco.org.
