Your YMCA at work in the community
HEALTHY LIVING PROGRAMS COMMUNITY INTEGRATED HEALTH BENEFITS ALL The Y aims to improve the nation’s health and well-being by providing programs and activities that promote wellness, reduce risk for disease, and help others reclaim their health. These programs and everything else the Y does are in service of making us—our Ys and our communities—better. The result is a country that values health and communities that support healthy choices.
If we want healthier communities, we need to build a bridge between these clinical and community approaches. Community integrated health is the effort to strengthen the linkages between traditional health care and communitybased prevention strategies (like the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program) in order to help individuals prevent, delay, or live better with chronic conditions.
We produced a recent video highlighting these program and would encourage you to watch to learn first-hand from program participants, the positive impact these programs had on their lives. Watch the video here: http://bit.ly/2j1AWMN

President’s Perspective
Scott Washburn
Dear Friends: As we say goodbye to 2017, I’d like to personally thank our members, donors, and volunteers for making our work possible. At the YMCA of Snohomish County, we’re about strengthening community through our commitment to youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Our focus on these areas allows us to change lives while addressing critical community needs. Our three-year strategic plan (2015-17) is coming to an end, and in early 2018 we will adopt our new plan, guiding us through 2020. We have much to celebrate as we close out the year:

Engaging and supporting all segments of society comes naturally to us, as a global organization with an inclusive mission and enduring core values. Whether you are new to this country or have lived here your entire life, our Ys want to help you reach your full potential. This always has been, and always will be, an essential part of our promise to people and communities. A polarized republic may be our present, but it need not be our future. At the Y, we know unity is possible. We know people can find common ground. We know communities can be safe, vital, and cohesive, because we have seen it happen -- indeed, we have helped make it happen, by respecting all people and creating welcoming environments. Our Ys are leading the way to a brighter future by acting on our belief that we are stronger when we are inclusive and our doors are open to all. This is an exciting time for the YMCA of Snohomish County. The work we have done gives us much to be proud of and many new opportunities to explore.

NEW YEAR NEW WEBSITE
The YMCA of Snohomish County is launching its newly redesigned website in January 2018. The opportunity existed to re-engineer the site to incorporate the latest web technology. The new responsive website will render well on a variety of devices and screen sizes. “The amount of information we have on our site, as well as the diverse members and communities we serve, make it a challenge to organize the information,” said Shaylah Kugler, YMCA Digital Communications Manager. “We feel this new site is more intuitive with all program information now found under one area.”

MAKING A DIFFERENCE
IN THE LIVES OF OUR YOUTH In its seventh year, Beyond School Walls is a workplace mentoring program that allows children access to adult mentors. One of 17 programs nationwide, it is part of a national partnership between Comcast and Big Brothers Big Sisters. Students from Woodside Elementary meet oneon-one with Comcast mentors and take part in structured group activities that center around team building, and interpersonal skill building. For more information on the Beyond School Walls program or how to become a Big, please contact Suzanne Leavitt, Program Supervisor at sleavitt@ bbbs-snoco.org.
COLLABORATING
TO SUPPORT THE COMMUNITY The Casino Road Collaborative was recently awarded a Core Collaborative Grant by United Way of Snohomish County. These grants provide support for groups of multiple cross-sector partners with shared action plans focused on long-term outcomes for children birth to age 8 and their families with low income. The Casino Road Opportunity For All Collaborative is comprised of nonprofit and public sector partners committed to serving families in the greater Casino Road community, home to the highest concentration of poverty in Snohomish County. This Collaborative will serve immigrant, low-income, non-English speaking families with children ages 0-6, as nearly 25% of foreign-born Casino Road families with young children live below the poverty line. Working in concert with the Casino Road Initiative, this Collaborative will address systemic issues related to poverty, race, and immigration by meeting basic needs and evolving their network of services to a family-centered, versus agency-centered, approach. Collaborative Partners include: YMCA of Snohomish County, Community Health Center of Snohomish County, Seattle Goodwill Industries, Casa Latina, Embajadores, Casino Road Initiative, ChildStrive, Mukilteo School District, Everett Community College.

MY Y STORY:
Mary is Moving Forward Participating in LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA was the best thing I could have done for myself. Through the program I gained friendships with others experiencing the same health issues. Together, we shared our hopes and joys, and encouraged each other to focus on moving forward rather than looking back. The Y has helped me gain a new understanding of what is best for me, and has given me a better mind, body, and soul. I am glad that I participated in LIVESTRONG and encourage others to take advantage of this wonderful program.
We understand that military families are under enormous strain. As a member of the Y, you and your family can spend quality time together and enjoy fun activities in a warm, supportive environment. It’s also a place to meet other military families who can relate to your unique situation. Title 10 personnel are eligible for a Y membership. Contact Military OneSource at www.militaryonesource.com or 800 342 9647 to confirm your eligibility and receive an eligibility form. Please contact Allison Hoot at 360 651 1607 if you have questions regarding these military family programs or visit
