EVERETT FAMILY YMCA

Welcome to the YMCA!

2720 Rockefeller Ave. Everett, WA 98201 P 425 258 9211 F 425 259 2328

Message from the President New year, new you. If you’re like me, the new year brings a myriad of openings for new opportunities and challenges. At the YMCA we’re here to help you meet those challenges. For more than 117 years, your Everett Family YMCA has provided enriching programs for the entire family. This winter, we invite you to volunteer for our youth sports or swim lessons program, explore how our preschool program prepares students for early learning and kindergarten readiness, or advocate for the YMCA through our Annual Campaign entitled, “The Y . For a Better Us .” ™

We also encourage you to try a variety of wellness programs designed to provide new found energy and strength. As you can see, your YMCA has something for everyone. At the YMCA, you can become engaged with and involved in a community that has served the greater Everett area for well over a century. Welcome to the Everett Family YMCA; for youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Yours in good health and happiness in 2018,

Ted Wenta Vice President of Operations

HEALTHY LIVING WHAT IS PREDIABETES?

YMCA’S DIABETES PREVENTION PROGRAM.

Prediabetes is a condition in which individuals have blood glucose levels that are higher than normal, but not high enough to be classified as diabetes. People with prediabetes are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.

If you are at high risk for type 2 diabetes, the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program can help you adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles that will help you reduce your chances of developing diabetes.

An estimated one in three U.S. adults has prediabetes, yet just 11% of those with prediabetes know they have it. Prediabetes increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Risk for developing type 2 diabetes may be reduced or eliminated by weight loss, healthier eating, and increased physical activity.

The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program helps those at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles by eating healthier, increasing physical activity and losing a modest amount of weight in order to reduce their chances of developing the disease. Research by the National Institutes of Health has proven that programs like the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program can reduce the number of cases of type 2 diabetes by 58%.

PROGRAM GOALS:

Reduce body weight by 7%

Increase physical activity to 150 minutes per week

DETAILS: In a classroom setting, a trained lifestyle coach will facilitate a small group of participants in learning about healthier eating, physical activity and other behavior changes. The year-long program consists of 25 sessions over the course of one year. The group will meet every week for 16 weeks, followed by three bi-weekly classes, then six months of follow-up with one session per month. WHO CAN PARTICIPATE? In order to qualify for the program, you must be at least18 years old, overweight (BMI > 25)* and at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes indicated by a confirmatory blood value†, prediabetes determined by clinical diagnosis of Gestational Diabetes (GDM) during previous pregnancy, or a qualifying risk score. TO SEE IF YOU QUALIFY, AND TO ENROLL, CONTACT: Lynnette Monpas lmonpas@ymca-snoco.org 425 374 5777 *Asian individual(s) BMI > 22 †Individuals who have already been diagnosed with either type 1 or type 2
