WINTER PROGRAM GUIDE December - March EVERETT FAMILY YMCA

EVERETT FAMILY YMCA 2720 Rockefeller Ave. Everett, WA 98201 P 425 258 9211 F 425 259 2328

MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Hello and thank you for being a part of the Everett YMCA community. Winter in the great Northwest often brings us indoors for our activities and exercise. At the Y you will find many different programs and activities throughout the branch such as swimming, sports, and group exercise to keep you active, safe and healthy through this season. Winter is also the time for the Y’s Annual Campaign when we raise funds to support those in need throughout our community. Our 2019 fundraising goal is $240,000 and I invite everyone to participate by volunteering, making a donation, or participating in one of our many fundraising events throughout the next few months. Everything the Y does is in service of making individuals and communities—or “us”—better, this why it’s important for you to get involved and make “us” stronger. More than just a gym, your YMCA is an important cause and makes a difference in strengthening our community. We provide needed financial assistance to children, families and seniors. The money we raise is used for program scholarships allowing everyone to participate at the Y. Your participation would be greatly appreciated! I look forward to continuing to serve and meet your needs as a YMCA member, as always; my door is always open for comments and suggestions and feedback. Sincerely, Kyla

SCHOOL AGE CHILD CARE SCHOOL AGE CARE BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL When school’s out, you can trust the Y to provide an engaging experience for your child right at school. Y School Age programs give your child the opportunity to get to know some of their classmates better as they engage in active play and collaborate on fun projects. In the process, they’ll continue to develop the physical, educational, emotional, and social skills that are essential for success. Our School Age programs serve children enrolled in North Everett elementary schools during their out-of-school times from 6:30 am6:30 pm. On-site programs are located at the following schools: Whittier (Transportation provided to and from Garfield and Hawthrone Elementary) Jackson (Transportation provided to and from Emerson, Lowell, Madison and View Ridge) These programs are also accessible to students enrolled in the following schools via transportation provided daily: Hawthorne, Madison, Emerson, View Ridge, Garfield, Lowell OUR PROGRAMS Children are like sponges - they watch and absorb knowledge, skills and values from everything and everyone around them. At the Y, we believe the values and skills learned early on are vital building blocks for quality of life and future success. At the Y, school-age kids make friends, learn new skills and do homework. Most importantly, children learn how to be their best selves. Specific activities are different for each location and age group, but all locations feature:

• • • • • • • •

Academic support from caring role models Physical activity and movement Free-Choice/Open Centers Healthy Snack

We support school efforts in learning by bridging the gap between school and back. The Y provides hands on experiential activities for kids to learn in different ways. Our School Age Care staff strive to create ways for every child to learn and grow. OUR STAFF Our School Age programs are staffed with people who understand the cognitive, physical and social development of kids; the need children have to feel connected and supported in trying new things; and the caring and reinforcement parents and families need to help each other. Each School Age location has a dedicated Site Coordinator, with a minimum of 30 college credits in early childhood or elementary education. Staff have attended, and continue to attend, regularly scheduled training events on Positive Behavior Guidance, Reframing Conflict, Active Learning, Building Community and Homework Help. Staff maintain current certification in CPR, First Aid, Child Abuse Prevention, and other certification required by the licensor. In addition, staff and volunteers are thoroughly screened prior to employment and evaluated on a regular basis to ensure continually high performance. HEALTHY LIVING ENHANCE®FITNESS AT THE YMCA

YMCA’S DIABETES PREVENTION PROGRAM

EnhanceFitness is geared toward older adults of all fitness levels. If you have a chronic condition, such as arthritis, you may be able to gain more strength and independence. You will feel energized— physically, mentally and socially—and be surrounded by people who care about your success.

You can reduce your risk for type 2 diabetes and gain tools for healthy living. The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program is a community-based lifestyle improvement program for adults with who are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes or have learned they are prediabetic. Its purpose is to empower adults with lasting lifestyle changes that will improve their overall health and reduce their chance of developing diabetes.

DETAILS:

The exercises are dynamic but can always be done at your pace

Up to 25 people in each class. We provide chairs and soft weights

Class meets 3 times per week and focuses on flexibility, balance, strength & movement

In a relaxed classroom setting, a trained lifestyle coach will help facilitate a small group of participants in learning how to incorporate healthier eating and moderate physical activity into their daily lives. This is a one-year program, beginning with 16 weekly sessions followed by monthly maintenance sessions. Individuals who have already been diagnosed with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes do not qualify for this program. For more information please email healthyliving@ymca-snoco.org or call 425 374 5777.

THE FACTS TELL THE STORY

http://www.ymca.net/diabetes-prevention/locate-participating-y

Research has shown that among older adults who participate in EnhanceFitness, health costs were lowered by close to $1,000 and 9 out of 10 people stay with the program. In addition, 99% say they would recommend the program to a friend. TO SEE IF YOU QUALIFY, AND TO ENROLL, CONTACT: Carrol Bailey or Rene De Los Santos 360 651 1605

WHAT IS PREDIABETES? Prediabetes is a condition in which individuals have blood glucose levels that are higher than normal, but not high enough to be classified as diabetes. People with prediabetes are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. An estimated one in three U.S. adults has prediabetes, yet just 11% of those with prediabetes know they have it. Prediabetes increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Risk for developing type 2 diabetes may be reduced or eliminated by weight loss, healthier eating, and increased physical activity. Visit our website today to take a quiz to learn if you are at risk for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. Learn more at ymca-snoco.org/preventdiabetes.

FOR ALL: The new YMCA will be a vibrant hub for engagement and inclusion that unites our community and transforms lives. OUR The YMCA has been a cornerstone in the Everett community since 1901. Rebounding after the fire of 1920, and undergoing two major additions in 1960 and 1980, the Everett YMCA has continued to ensure that everyone, regardless of age, income, or background has the opportunity to live life to the fullest.

THE TIME IS As your YMCA and the greater Everett community have evolved over the decades, the need for facility replacement to more effectively achieve your YMCA’s mission is evident, including the demand to improve accessibility and program delivery. Supporting your YMCA has never been more important. The new Everett YMCA will serve thousands of youth, families, and adults, making Everett a better place to live for everyone. It will replace the current facility built in 1920, the oldest YMCA among the six Snohomish County Ys.

A SAFE PLACE FOR OUR YOUTH: Our current f not encourage interactions between people of all ages and backgrounds. The new YMCA will provide a safe place with caring adults and positive activities.

Help make it all Construction is beginning soon on the new Everett YMCA and we need your help to finish the job. One hundred percent of all donations will be used to fund project costs.

That’s where you come If you believe that our community deserves a state-of-the-art center where everyone can come together to learn, play, and be healthier, then we hope you will join us in supporting this project. Your donation will help create a place where lives will be transformed—for generations to come. Through community donations, we have already raised more than $14 million towards our $17 million goal.

But keeping our neighborhoods great is a full-time job. Every day, our community faces new challenges that create a greater need for the work we do. And we need your help to do it. Your gift can help Snohomish County and everyone in it shine. For a better you. For a better community. The Y.™ For a better us. Learn more at ymca-snoco.org/ForABetterUs
