building for our future 2012 ANNUAL REPORT YMCA OF SNOHOMISH COUNTY

YMCA-snoco.org

Dear Friends We believe in the importance of our cause, strengthening community, and the endless possibilities for impacting lives. By focusing on youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility, we enrich lives while addressing critical community needs.

Scott Washburn President & CEO

Even as the recession continued through 2012, our Y continued to thrive and grow. We launched a new strategic plan which includes a capital advancement plan for replacement of the Everett Branch and a new facility to serve the Stanwood and Camano Island communities. Both of these initiatives continue to gain momentum and we are excited about the potential to serve even more children, teens and families in the near future. Our Monroe branch celebrated its five year facility anniversary in the community, our Casino Road Youth Development Center began partnering with Seattle Goodwill to offer English Language Learner classes, and keeping pace with technology we launched a new mobile application and planned giving website.

Leslie Lauer Association Board Chair

Ever since our founding, the annual Invest in Youth campaign has played a crucial role within the Y, subsidizing membership and program fees for those unable to afford them. Our Y once again experienced tremendous generosity from the community in support of this campaign and we raised a record $1,171,550. We also received a significant endowment gift of $800,000 from the Frieda Wallace Estate that will support youth programming in perpetuity. The results can be seen across all areas of the Y’s programming; from child care and summer camp, to wellness programs for the elderly, and those dealing with chronic disease. Every day members of our community are positively impacted by the donations to this campaign. The new strategic plan builds on our successful history and defines the role our Y can play in strengthening our community. Through this plan we will connect more volunteers, deliver quality services, foster a greater culture of philanthropy, support community health, grow our membership, and serve more youth and teens. We hope that as you view the report on the following pages, you will see how your support has empowered the Y to play a critical role in our community positively impacting the lives of 102,700 people, nearly 1 in 7 residents of Snohomish County. Thank you – our donors, volunteers, staff, and members – for your commitment to our YMCA. We look forward to working with you to continue to impact lives and strengthen our community.

invest in youth The YMCA of Snohomish County makes every effort to ensure that no person, especially youth, will be denied access to programs and membership because of financial hardship. The YMCA’s Financial Assistance Program is supported by contributions to the annual Invest in Youth campaign. During 2012, $1,760,000 was provided in direct financial assistance to 10,730 individuals. In addition, through the generosity of our donors, United Way, members, and specific program grants, we were able to provide subsidized programs and services to thousands of kids, youth, and families who would not otherwise be able to participate, thus extending opportunities and increasing access to YMCA asset-building programs in extraordinary ways.

MEMBER IMPACT: BOB’S STORY As Bob Nord stands in the Y, he can vividly remember being there as a boy, hovering at the edge of the pool, overcoming his fear, plunging in and passing his swim test. “That’s the way they did it in those days,” he recalls. What’s truly remarkable is that “those days” were about 80 years ago!

Marysville/North County Family YMCA 6420 60th Drive NE, Marysville, WA 98270 360 653 9622

Today at age 90, Bob swims every day for an hour and follows it up with 30 minutes on the treadmill. He admits he isn’t fast, but he doesn’t stop. Bob sees the Y as more than a place to work out – he believes that it’s a pillar of the community, and has been so in his many years of experience with the organization. The sense of community he feels at the Y helps motivate him to keep coming back.

Mill Creek Family YMCA 13723 Puget Park Drive, Everett, WA 98208 425 337 0123

“I can’t imagine what life would be like without the activity of the Y. Exercising at the Y keeps my mental attitude and my health up and improves my whole quality of life.”

VOLUNTEER IMPACT: ART’S story Dr. Art Grossman has been a YMCA member and local family practitioner for more than three decades. When the Y added an indoor cycling program, Art offered his knowledge of cycling training, becoming an instructor for indoor cycling classes. “Preparing for cycling class is quite a bit of work,” Art says. His class includes a variety of levels of cyclers, many of whom credit Art’s expertise and assistance for getting them to where they need to be for big rides. Both at the Y and his medical practice, he enjoys helping people reach their fitness goals. His prescription for his patients: their local Y. “For more than 35 years the Y has enhanced my life, and I encourage others to come here as well. The Y makes an effort to create lasting relationships with their members and provide a friendly environment. That is what draws me here and keeps me coming back.”

A proud recipient of United Way community impact funding
